The use of music I don't care for won't sway my decision to watch or not watch.   For example, I like the American Pie movies, but the soundtrack is filled with rock songs from the late 90s / early 00s, which I think was an awful time for rock music.   But that doesn't affect my opinion on the movie.   The movie Office Space had a lot of rap in the soundtrack, but I still loved it

On the TV side, How I Met Your Mother used a lot of indie music I didn't much care for, but I still liked the show.
Then to change sides - is there any show you're hot & cold about but which used dominantly songs by your favorite music acts?

I was thinking about that earlier.   From what I recall, The Sopranos used a healthy dose of classic rock, but I never got into the show.

I didn't get that show as well. Thematically boring & at times too philosophical. What can you tell? Is it the same reason you didn't like "The Sopranos"? Anything else?

Mafia movies and shows just don't interest me in the least bit.  I'm not really sure why.

If I didn't like them in my 20s, I definitely won't like them now, as I tend to go for lighter fare these days.

Then agreed, it's thematically boring. Mafia stuff isn't my bag either.

Which actors do you regard as people who can do very well comedy AND serious roles?

First and foremost, Tom Hanks.  Hanks starred in a string of really good comedies in the 80s like The Money Pit, The Burbs, Big, and Dragnet, then transitioned to more serious roles in the 1990s with Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan.

Robin Williams also.   He could do both in the same movie, like in Good Morning Vietnam, which features some of his funniest and most serious moments.   Same goes for Mrs. Doubtfire.

John Cusack.   One of my favorite silly 80s comedies is One Crazy Summer.   He's done more serious stuff too like Love and Mercy

Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler have proven that they are more than capable of handling good drama, though especially in Sandler’s case they’d rather do their usual schtick.

As for Mafia stuff, The Godfather films, Goodfellas and Casino are all amazing. Never got round to checking out The Sopranos though

I forgot about Jim Carrey.  Man on the Moon was amazing.  I never checked out any of Sandler's more dramatic roles.  In a certain way, I respect him as he looks like he's having fun with what he does.   Often times, it appears his movies were more fun to make than to watch.

Tom's got humor in him, agree. But think Robin played better comedy than serious roles.

2Rei: Hm, Sandler starred in drama?

Next question: Which singers/ bands appeared in films but didn't say any line, didn't talk with characters? F.ex. Jack Jones in "Airplane 2". Who else?

Sandler's been in a few dramas which he was surprisingly good in - Funny People, Punch-Drunk Love, Spanglish and Reign Over Me (I've only actually seen Funny People, though I've heard nothing but great things about Punch-Drunk Love). Hell, Click has some heavy, effective dramatic moments as well, particularly towards the film's climax.

As for singers, there's George Harrison's cameo in Life Of Brian for one

Well if they say great things about it, doesn't mean it is. Wait before *you* see it.

Is it where George talks to mic/ camera like reporter? It's Terry Gilliam film right? The question was different - about singer/ band playing themselves, strictly music, not single bit of acting, no lines, no talk with any main/ supporting cast.

If it’s strictly them playing music and all that, there’s The Yardbirds (Beck/Page line-up) in the film Blow-Up

I tend to prefer Robin Williams' funnier roles too, but Good Morning Vietnam is my favorite movie of his.   It's still a comedy, but it does have some seriousness to it.

Singers that appeared in films, but don't have any lines.

Well, Roger Waters has an extremely quick cameo in the movie version of The Wall.

Rush made an appearance in the comedy I Love You Man.   They're seen on stage, but never converse with any of the characters.

Same goes for White Zombie in Airheads and Cannibal Corpse in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

Just checked its Russian wiki page - interesting, its plot's taken after book in turn inspired by "Rear Window" which is big favorite Hitch film. But it says BU contains many explicit scenes which I'd really hate seeing, it repulses. Dilemma.

2KDS: I didn't see "The Wall" but read that people like hearing the album songs in its film frame but just album they don't "get" it. Will you agree with it or disagree?

Do you like it? I'd seen many praises given to Monkees film "Head" & the Who film (the title escapes). "The Wall" got praised as well but it looks like many enjoy the 60s-70s films as far as music artists' works.

There's two Who films actually (not counting feature length documentaries such as The Kids Are Alright) - Tommy and Quadrophenia (the latter with Sting playing a major role)

I think The Wall works well as a visual representation of the concept album of the same name.   It's really more of a 90 minute music video than a movie, as there's very little actual dialog, and the visuals tell the story as the music plays.   About a third of the movie is made of animation that Floyd used to project during their Wall Tour in 1980-1.   I think it's a good film, but even Roger Waters apparently isn't a huge fan.

I've never seen Head.   As for The Who.    There's Tommy, a full on musical based on their album Tommy.   I think it's a disaster.   Oliver Reed and Jack Nicholson have no business being in a musical.   Ann Margaret is beyond hammy, and most of the songs are far inferior to the album, or early 70s live versions.   Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, and Arthur Brown are decent in it, but it's not enough to save it.

Quadrophenia, on the other hand is very good.    It's not a musical, but it uses the songs from the album throughout to add color to the narrative.    I think, as a film based on an album, it's far far far superior to Tommy, and also better than The Wall.

2KDS: Thanks to the detailed write-up. Speaking of musicals, did you see any stage musical based on music bands/ artists' catalogs?

While Im all for anything that exposes new audiences to great music, I'm not a fan of those broadway arranged jukebox stage musicials like Mamma Mia, We Will Rock You, Rock of Ages, etc.

I hope the majority of people who watch those will seek out the superior original versions of the songs.

2KDS: Don't hope. It's their problem if they don't seek the original songs.

Back to TV - you like the past TV shows but like few new as well. Do you like new actors & who? Is any as good as the classic era TV show stars? Discuss.

The reason I hope those jukebox musicals help people seek out the originals is because there really is no other reason to justify their existance.

I cant think of any current TV actors as good as the ones before.  In fact, several actors from the past are in modern shows I watch - Judd Hirsch, Katey Segal, Damon Wayans, etc.

One I could mention is Jim Parsons, who perfectly plays the socially oblivious Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory.

2KDS: Fair answer re: 1st paragraph.

We discussed TV shows & big screen film. What can you say about TV films? I gathered that making TV shows is the main point in acting in television - the TV format allows to divide narrative into series. What do you think is the purpose to make the same single, feature length picture in TV? Shouldn't feature film be big screen only? Why TV went this path as well? Discuss.

I think TV movies came about just as another ootion.  Making a feature length story that doesnt necessarily deserve its own series.

As with anything, its a mixed bag.   The SyFy Channel is known for airing cheap B level movies that likely would lose money in a theatrical release.   Premium channels often have bigger budgets, and some movies can be quite good, such as 61*, an HBO movie about the 1961 homerun race.

And though its not popular, I think The Beach Boys American Family is pretty good, particularly the first half.

2KDS: Can you tell why big screen films get the next viewing in TV? Instead going straight to DVD?

We agreed before about Tim Allen being underrated. Whose jokes you don't "get", who's lesser comedian to you but many like?

Most big screen movies actually go to DVD / On Demand before they air on TV.   They'll air on premium channels first, then make their way onto basic channels.

There's a lot of modern comedic actors that do nothing for me - Jimmy Fallon, Dane Cook, Melissa McCarthy, Adam Goldberg, Sarah Silverman, etc.   I just don't find them funny in the least bit.
