I do wish Dennis had snuck Mike into the studio to record the bass vocals for the title track though.
I think Dennis' bass vocals on Pacific Ocean Blues, River Song, Moonshine etc... are really great, as good as Mike in their own way. No need for the Lovester. Dennis got off some good bass vocals on a lot of BB's tracks too, Wouldn't It Be Nice, Steamboat, Its OK, Shortnin Bread etc...

Honestly, I don't think 1977 was a realistic time for the BBs to do POB. The perfect time would have been in the wake of Holland, but before Endless Summer. Early 74 would've been perfect. Maybe if in 73 they weren't touring as much and spent some time in the studio it would have possibly kept Blondie around longer. Although, I am sure that he and Ricky would have wanted something on the album. But again, this is purely hypothetical that the BBs agreed to give Dennis the control that Brian had with Pet Sounds.
Another hypothetical would be if POB was a huge success and competed with Endless Summer, then what?
I think the best way for them to have moved forward, and perhaps even on POB, is that most of the songs are by Dennis, but you add the best ideas from everyone else and it just might improve upon it even more and just might have kept them together as a progressive group through the ES period.

I think the more realistic fantasy is that in the post Holland, pre 15BO writing desert: The Beach Boys owe an album and are getting desperate. Carl of course is in the know regarding what Dennis has been up to at Brother Studios and the Beach Boys go "Hey, what if this was a Beach Boys album"? and basically come in put on their vocals when the album's just about done as-is.

I could imagine a few of the songs going over well in a live context. The only thing is, why no Brian leads? His voice was pretty good in 1977. As evidenced on "Love You".

Same reason there weren't any Brian leads on Sunflower and only one (current one, at least) on Surf's Up, and none on CATP, or Holland..... Whatever the reason was :/

Yes, Please!
It's funny, because they are two of my favourite albums, by anyone, but I kinda know what you mean.
Wasn't Love You meant to be a Brian solo album at first anyway, but ended up being BB? Crazy...POB was the basis for a QUALITY Beach Boys album, whereas Love You , much as I love it, sounds like a crazy solo project

It's a shame Brian shied away from leads during the early 70's yet took centre stage at a time when his voice sounded like crap.

My point was that by 1977 he was doing leads, unlike the early 70s. So I think it might be fair to assume he would have sang some leads on POB, especially with his brother producing it.
