At the Philly show tonight. Brian was in top form & sang Til I Die. Blondie made a surprise appearance & did SOS & Wild Honey. Darian sang a great lead on Darlin. Brian sounds great, never heard him in such great voice. His recent workouts have his lung capacity improved substantially & it shows in his singing. Classic animated happy Brian. What a night! Can't wait to hear him with Beck later.

Also checking in at the show. Jeff Beck is on now and providing an awesome set so far.

Brian, Al and David were exceptional. Pretty much the same setlist as recent gigs, and yes, Blondie showed up for Sail on Sailor. These guys are on fire. Awesome.

Well, just got home.

What a show. Holy sh*t. You guys and girls need to see this tour.

Brian sounded the best that l've heard in concert; this beats even the 2009 American tour as far as his voice goes. He was upbeat, screwing around with Al and David in between offering humorously half-assed introductions to Foskett and Darian for their respective leads. Al was his usual self, playing and clapping along. He NAlLED Cottonfields and had the audience in hysterics during Help Me, Rhonda. David only had the lead on Little Bird, but this was to be expected as guitar is where he shines. And oh, did he shine. He traded off licks with Foskett during Pet Sounds, which ended with one of at least a dozen ovations given during the gig. Blondie was a surprise; l probably scared half of the people around me after screaming when l saw him walk onstage. He ripped through excellent versions of Sail On Sailor and Wild Honey and appeared on and off throughout the set on guitar and percussion. His voice has only become better with age, and his guitar just killed tonight. Overall, a fantastic gig on Brian's part.

l haven't really listened much to Jeff Beck's stuff beyond some of the Yardbirds stuff and the Blow By Blow album, so l was going in cold to his set. l respect the hell out of him as a guitarist, and he was definitely on fire tonight. l didn't know any of the titles beyond his versions of Little Wing and How High the Moon, but l was impressed with the material he played. His backup group was very good, and the acoustics at the Tower made them sound HUGE. Brian, Al, David, and a few of Brian's band showed up for a few numbers with Beck, including an Our Prayer/Surf's Up medley.

Both bands shared an encore, with Beck playing lead guitar on Barbara Ann and Surfin' USA, and closing the show with a surprisingly awesome rendition of Danny Boy with Brian's group backing him up on vocals.

Seriously, people. See this tour. This is probably the only time it'll happen.

Hey, is that a Gregorian chant? No, it's Our Prayer/Surf's Up in CT.

There's lots along those lines. Now... where's that Wild Honey?

I see Darlin' back in the setlist for that show as well...

http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/5755396/jeff-beck-exploring-middle-east-on-next-album-talks-stalled-rod-stewart

Beck, who's currently on tour with Brian Wilson, tells Billboard that much of the impetus for these new styles are coming from his latest band, which includes guitarist NIcolas Meier and violinist/vocalist Lizzie Ball.

"I've never had a rhythm guitarist on stage with me, but (Meier) is more than that," Beck notes. "He has a Turkish style, a Middle Eastern flavor, and we're writing stuff with that and trying to probe the depths of some Turkish scales just to do something different. I'm trying to absorb some of the more interesting movements that are available in some Middle Eastern music. And Ireland is another place with powerful, emotional melodies."

Beck says the group has so far cut one demo for one new song, "Yemin," which he says "enables me to play my style wedged into those (Middle Eastern) scales, so in one song you've got two fairly strong elements there. I can do gymnastics with a Stratocaster; that's part of the reason Nicolas wrote this. It's a chance of a lifetime, really, to have someone like him and Lizzie Ball on violin, 'cause the violin adds a very unique sound to rock 'n' roll."

--

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/inthemix/Chasing-Brian-Wilson.html

"And after that song, everyone said their goodbyes, and Wilson, who is a towering hulk of a man, was whisked away from his keyboard and escorted backstage. That was that, I figured. So much for chatting up Brian Wilson. But keep your eyes wide, the chance might come again. When I heard he was going out on the road with Beck this fall, I thought it was odd.  There's a surf guitar overlap between the former Yardbird with the rooster hair cut and the early Beach Boys, I suppose, though the BBs were always more about harmonies that guitar licks. But I was even more surprised when I heard that Wilson was available for a phone interview.

Wilson isn't the easiest guy to talk to. He's friendly enough, but often blurts out nearly monosyllabic answers, and often seems more connected to, as he put it, "the other worlds" than the one we share with him. He also has a strangely loud, disconcerting laugh, which came though the line when I asked him if he was a fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and their bearded relief pitcher Brian Wilson."

Brian sounds GREAT on God Only Knows. Did you hear him on the bridge when Jeff briefly missed his cue?!

As I said a few pages back, the wife came through and I have her to thank for tonight's FANTASTIC experience!  I don't have too much to add about the show but I was really happy to see "Good Vibrations" moved to the closing spot of Brian's set.  I mean: bam! Bam!! BAM!!!  All three number one singles, one right after the other.  (What?  They had a FOURTH number one too?  Oh, yeah.)  It's almost like they were daring Beck to follow them. Smiley Al wore the suit and Blondie wore...?  Grin

After Brian's set, one of the guys next to me said, "Even better than last night."  I said something I can't remember and he asked if I was there for Brian Wilson.  My reply caught him off guard:  "I'm here for Blondie Chaplin!!!"   LOL   It turns out he was actually a Beck fan.  He told me Blondie wasn't there last night and I, still flying high on excitement said, "I know!  That's why I'm here TONIGHT!
Rock!

And man, did Blondie (and all the guys) deliver!  I NEVER thought I'd see Blondie sing "Wild Honey", much less with (most of) the Beach Boys!  And he nailed it, and "Sail On Sailor".  Amazing to see.  As some know I'm a huge fan of Jeff F. and tonight was the first time I got to see him sing either of my two favorite Beach Boys songs and he nearly brought me to tears; especially "Wouldn't It Be Nice".  I'll admit his falsetto can be a bit shrill at times (now that he's getting older) but with Brad Delp and Carl no longer with us, and Brian and Paul no longer the singers they once were, I actually think Foskett's full voice tenor, is about the most beautiful male voice in rock and roll; and he sounded AMAZING on "Wouldn't It Be Nice".  It was like he was chanelling young Brian!  And speaking of Brian, WOW!  'Nuff said.

As noted above, Al sounded unbelievable tonight.  HOW is this guy 71 years old? Huh  "Cottonfields" was phenomenal!  He asked us to pardon his commercial plugs for the boxed set but I for one, appreciated them.  It made it feel like we weren't just watching an oldies review and instead, a great band, out on tour, playing a great show in a great venue.  Dave, as always, did a great job on "Little Bird".  Tho I much prefer "Forever", the "Child..." reference in "Little Bird" definitely appeals to the Smile lover obsessive in me.

Beck was what he was: Amazing talent, great showman, and of very little interest to me.  Things dragged a bit for me after a couple songs but "Little Wing" offered a bit of a reprieve since it was actually melody based.  I was SO happy when the guys came back out and the rest of the set ("Our Prayer" through "A Day In The Life") was top notch.  Then the encores showed you how much fun everyone on this tour is obviously having.

A fantastic show in a great venue AND not only did the wife come through but she also came through with GREAT seats!  Bliss.

I thought I was already excited enough! Hot damn. Great to hear Blondie getting more to do...

is this the mystery song they were harmonizing on with Beck after Surf's Up?

Ah, thanks for that!  Yeah, that's what I was talking about.  Guess it wasn't new but still a pretty cool performance.  This plus Surf's Up and Danny Boy, this is a unique kind of style that the Wilson and Beck bands have put together, I hope there will be some sort of professional recording to preserve it.

When the heck is Al gonna step up and start singing his part in Surf's Up?? C'mon son!

That would be cool. I recall that someone who attended one of the soundchecks later in the "C50" tour said they watched the Beach Boys rehearse "Surf's Up" (with Totten on lead), and Al sang his part as on the original record. I'm guessing on the current Brian tour, because it's Brian's song, and he otherwise isn't prominently figuring into the peformance since Beck is doing the main melody line, they have Brian singing that part so that he is more a part of the performance. Just a guess.

From my vantage it looked like Al sang it at the Westbury show, but his mic was low in the mix for that particular song so it wasn't super audible.

http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/5755435/brian-wilson-says-album-with-jeff-beck-is-different-than-anything-ive-ever

Brian Wilson is well aware of all those rumors about three different albums he's working on. But, Wilson cautions, he's taking one thing at a time.

"We just know the one we're doing now," Wilson tells Billboard, referring to a straightforward song album that he says he's "about two-thirds of the way through. We have eight or nine songs done, and we need three or four more songs. Most of it is very mellow kind of stuff, mellow harmony, not very much rock 'n' roll yet. It' a pretty unique album. It's very different than anything I've ever done."

...

Beck acknowledges that the tour roster "is an odd combination, no doubt about it. Whether it works or not, people have to decide. But if it was me walking down the road and I could see Brian Wilson and someone else on guitar doing two disparate kinds of music, I wouldn't think that was weird at all. I would think it's like two concerts in one, really, with a little paper clip in the middle."

Jeff Foskett gave Blondie the call. Interesting. I also didn't know that Al saw Flame first, and Carl saw them after Al.

Great little piece. I love this part:

BLONDIE: I was thinking, "I can't believe I'm hearing these voices again and singing these songs." It was strange. Every time Brian is on the piano I turn around and go, "Wow, this is really strange." It is strange, but good strange.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

I just have to say, after reflecting a few days on seeing Brian at the Oakdale in CT that he seemed to be really into the show. When Jeff was doing the falsetto at the end of "Fun Fun Fun", Brian was doing this "whoa" counterpart that I hadn't heard him do before in video clips. He also added an extra "Goodnight baby, sleep tight baby" at the end of WIBN: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtrAnOf6oyQ and he did the final "God Only Knows" during that song that I hadn't heard him do in clips from this summer's tour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMEzrjDuAAk Just little things to indicate he's fully immersed in the music, instead of sitting blankly.

Anyway I think Brian is energized at this point in the tour. The shorter set and touring with Al and David takes away some of the vocal responsibility as well. I don't think it's surprising that at the next show he decided to start playing the bass in the encore again.

I really hope someone uploads some footage of "Wild Honey" from last night's show.  In addition to everything else, keep in mind how Brian's band is know for meticulously recreating the actual recordings.  Since Brian's (original) and Carl's (live, Blondie sung) arrangements for the song were so different, it's no surprise that the band is currently playing an all new arrangment that's kind of a combination of both.  I can't wait to see it.  And as I said, I'd prefer to see it from the Philly show because I KNOW I'll be audible on it.   Grin

As for the end of Surf's Up, it sounds like Al on the clips I have seen and it seemed like he was singing it in Wallingford. He might be doubled by someone or mixed low.
