Hey, is that a Gregorian chant? No, it's Our Prayer/Surf's Up in CT.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iRsKj-02OY

god only knows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27CIGP5hMqw
goodbye pork pie hat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDq7fN-xPk4
rollin' n tumblin' n' stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZfPNJVCHG0
barbara freakin' ann: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2a8vDit65xk
encore: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIGTLlgIFys

There's lots along those lines. Now... where's that Wild Honey?

I see Darlin' back in the setlist for that show as well...

http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/5755396/jeff-beck-exploring-middle-east-on-next-album-talks-stalled-rod-stewart

Beck, who's currently on tour with Brian Wilson, tells Billboard that much of the impetus for these new styles are coming from his latest band, which includes guitarist NIcolas Meier and violinist/vocalist Lizzie Ball.

"I've never had a rhythm guitarist on stage with me, but (Meier) is more than that," Beck notes. "He has a Turkish style, a Middle Eastern flavor, and we're writing stuff with that and trying to probe the depths of some Turkish scales just to do something different. I'm trying to absorb some of the more interesting movements that are available in some Middle Eastern music. And Ireland is another place with powerful, emotional melodies."

Beck says the group has so far cut one demo for one new song, "Yemin," which he says "enables me to play my style wedged into those (Middle Eastern) scales, so in one song you've got two fairly strong elements there. I can do gymnastics with a Stratocaster; that's part of the reason Nicolas wrote this. It's a chance of a lifetime, really, to have someone like him and Lizzie Ball on violin, 'cause the violin adds a very unique sound to rock 'n' roll."

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/inthemix/Chasing-Brian-Wilson.html

"And after that song, everyone said their goodbyes, and Wilson, who is a towering hulk of a man, was whisked away from his keyboard and escorted backstage. That was that, I figured. So much for chatting up Brian Wilson. But keep your eyes wide, the chance might come again. When I heard he was going out on the road with Beck this fall, I thought it was odd.  There's a surf guitar overlap between the former Yardbird with the rooster hair cut and the early Beach Boys, I suppose, though the BBs were always more about harmonies that guitar licks. But I was even more surprised when I heard that Wilson was available for a phone interview.

Wilson isn't the easiest guy to talk to. He's friendly enough, but often blurts out nearly monosyllabic answers, and often seems more connected to, as he put it, "the other worlds" than the one we share with him. He also has a strangely loud, disconcerting laugh, which came though the line when I asked him if he was a fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and their bearded relief pitcher Brian Wilson."

End of Brian's first set, pretty incredible, band sounded great and Brian looked really happy.  After Sloop John B, Brian said "When Al and I were singing together on that, didn't we sound great?"  The audience responded favorably.  "God Only Knows" was gorgeous, Brian can really still sing if he's into it.  No Blondie tonight, no rarities except for the usual Little Bird, Cotton Fields medley, and Their Hearts Were Full of Spring as an opener.  No Marcella, no hot rod songs but perhaps they're saving those for the encore.  So far, this has been a fantastic show.

Brian either has Melinda in his ear more than ever or he's actually enjoying this tour

After "Surf's Up," both bands played a song that I'm going to assume is new, I certainly didn't recognize it as anything but I could be wrong.  It was another one with Beck on melody with Brian and his band on backing vocals.  They didn't announce it as new but like I said, it was nothing I've heard before and it was pretty awesome.

Curious to know what everyone thinks of Dave's leads on this tour. They're a little less surf, a little more garage from what I saw on Boston. They seemed to progress a little bit during the C50 tour too. They started out fairly note for note compared to the records based on what I remember from the CT show in May and he made them more his own by the time I saw them in June in Boston.

I could really have it either way. It's very impressive to hear Dave copy Carl's leads perfectly. But given that these aren't Beach Boys shows, I like hearing his own personality come out when he is able to play leads this time around.

Nah sorry, I didn't record anything, I was pretty caught up in the show, I didn't feel like taking out my phone.  It was a pretty intimate venue so I was able to get really into it, Brian was literally 20 feet away from me, it was a great seat.

Just got back from the show. It was very good. Brian, Al, David and Brian's band started the show by singing Their Hearts Were Full of Spring, which I personally have never seen them open a show with. I'm going by memory, so I may be missing a few numbers, but the set list for the first half of the show was as follows:

Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring
California Girls
Do It Again
Then I Kissed Her (Al on lead)
Don't Worry Baby (Foskett lead vocal)
Little Bird (David lead vocal)
Old Man River/Cotton Fields (Al)
Darlin (Darian lead vocal)
Heroes and Villains
Sail On Sailor
God Only Knows
Good Vibrations
Sloop John B.
Wouldn't It Be Nice (Foskett lead vocal)
I Get Around
Help Me Rhonda (Al)
Fun Fun Fun

Brian sounded good, but a standout track where he sounded absolutely fantastic was Heroes and Villains. Al and David sounded amazing as usual. Really, everyone in Brian's band was really good tonight. After Fun Fun Fun, there was about a 15 minute intermission. Then Jeff Beck and his group came on and did their set. I'm not a Jeff Beck fan, but he and his group sounded really good during his set of what I can only describe as long rock jams. Two of them stood out to me as having some fairly prominent middle eastern influences. His band, especially his bass player and drummer, were really fantastic. While his playing was amazing, Jeff didn't interact too much with the crowd. He said only a few "thank yous" and a "let's bring Brian Wilson back out" toward the end. He did A Day in the Life from Sgt Pepper, and then brought Brian, Al, David, and the backup band out to do Our Prayer, followed by a bit of Child Is the Father of the Man, which segmented into Surf's Up.

There was another track that had Beck and both bands jamming with Brian, Al, David, and Jeff Foskett on backup vocals. It's the track Rocky Raccoon is talking about. I didn't recognize it either. I thought for a second that maybe it could of been Metropolis, but if that were the case, then it would be quite strange seeing as they didn't mention the track as being new. It probably isn't, but it did stick out as being the only song that was a Jeff Beck jam featuring Beach Boys harmonies that I couldn't identify.

Jeff also did Rollin' and Tumblin' with his band and Darian, Jeff Foskett, and Scott Bennett on vocals. After that, everyone came out on stage for the encore of Barbara Ann, Surfin' USA, and Danny Boy.

The crowd looked to be a pretty even mix of Beach Boys fans and Jeff Beck fans. I was sitting towards the back of the theater, dead center, so I had an optimal view of the whole crowd. It seemed to be a fairly even mix to me, but I thought the Jeff Beck fans tended to be a bit louder and more vocal than the Beach Boys fans. In general, the audience was very respectful to both artists and bands. At least that was my impression.

I agree that "Heroes and Villains" was incredible.  You forgot to list the "Pet Sounds" instrumental, that was a cool moment too, I like when the whole band gets a chance to shine.

I won't touch on any of the set stuff since the other two posts have it covered but I do want to comment on something far more striking (at least to me). I've seen Brian 7 or 8 times now, most recently at the AC show, and last night in Westbury was far and away the best I've ever heard him outside of a studio. In addition to having zero pitch problems the whole night, the overall timbre of his voice seemed much smoother than usual. He also looked noticeably slimmer and happier than I've seen in awhile, smiling and "conducting" throughout the entire set.

I'm guessing that all the exercise he's been talking about in interviews lately is helping his lung capacity a bit (among other things), which could account for the improved singing. Plus, the musicianship of JB and his band is probably making Brian up his own game as well.

Overall, one of the best shows I've been into in years and yes the billing of these two very different groups definitely "worked". There's clearly a lot of respect and fondness between the two men, which probably doesn't hurt either. Right before the group took a bow Brian got up from his seat, went over to Jeff and gave him a big hug.

Hoping the Beacon will be as good!

Just a note here that I was at the Oakdale and it was an amazing show. Apparently a guy freaked out in the middle of Brian's set because he didn't come to hear any Beach Boys music. He got thrown out before Beck's set began.

We will be in front of the theater around six to grab something to eat before the show. I have brown hair and gray-white beard, most likely wearing a green-black Eagles windbreaker.

I don't think we're gonna make it in time.  The person I'm going with is stuck working until 5:00.  Oh well, it would have been nice.  Where are you sitting?
