Brian did great on God Only Knows

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfhBYimut1M

Um... you listening to a different audio to me ? He's adequate, passable, but some way short of great. He's done much better, and recently.

My question is how is Brian gonna take a nap backstage while that rackets going on?

I thought they were supposed to do some Yardbirds songs? Jeff's set looks pretty short. I'd say Brian fans are getting plenty of music, though the setlist is really boring.

Well, there's no complete setlist for the Jeff Beck set yet.

I Get Around: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKbdWzHh4L0
Sloop Jardine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urt9-thNeaw (Alan finally snaps and questions his lack of corn)

A Day in the Life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJhR6d1-ook

The one you hate http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEsFGm6srDs (hmm, nice solo)

Opening night Brian in full effect.

Jeff's songs are all about double the length of Brian's songs. Really hope the set gets more interesting honestly...going to be a good show either way.

Hey man I'm trying to be positive. Compared to any other live performance he's done this year, yeah, this is great.

Really ? But I read over on his own board that every show he did this summer was the most wonderful live gig ever performed in the history of music, until the next one. So... clearly, someone is misleading me. I am confussed.

I'd label that one bad. As almost all of Brian's "God Only Knows" performances are. It's a shame because the band is SO spot on every time. It's like listening to karaoke.

Let's put this into perspective here guys. This is the best BW decided to (or could) give us earlier this year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPVOt0ceTVw

On the GOK clip, at least he's in key for most of the song. And he even pulls out a vibrato towards the end. Which I haven't heard him do in years...

But since we've gone there... just have a listen to the 2002 BB Kings Show on Youtube, for everyone saying he keeps getting better....

Both clips are drastically worse from the C50 show I saw last year. "Please Let Me Wonder" sounded AMAZING. It sounded like the record, I was blown away. He really nailed "Surfer Girl" too. I really wish he would let Al Jardine sing the Mike Love vocals. Mike's voice and Brian's voice are about as distant from one another as possible. At least Al is the middle ground.

I hope that Brian, Al and David make it over to the U.K. next year...but without Jeff Beck. Nothing against him but listening to an hour of his songs instead of an hour of Beach Boys music wouldn't appeal.

As has probably been said many times, the concept of this tour is hard to understand.  I wonder if Brian and Jeff Beck really hit it off.

I just read in the recent rolling stone that during the five days of rehearsal the only thing Brian said to Beck was "Do you wanna check your tuning?" LOL
He said Brian just stared at the ground the whole time...

I'm looking forward to Jeff Beck more than Brian at this point. He's a better musician than any of the beach boys. Better songwriter? No way Jose. But he's arguably one of the greatest guitarists alive.

Did Brian zone out on All Summer Long? Al looked at him like, "You OK Brian? Where'd ya go?" Lyrics weren't that hard to remember. Maybe the voices in his head..... He kept grabbing the ear piece. Sounds like they shoulda turned up his mic.

Agree with you Rubber Soul on your last post.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Does Beck sing at all during these shows? I'm not much for guitar noodling. It's quite frustrating that two of Brian's most beautiful songs - Don't Talk and Surf's Up - are being played with THE MAN on stage and we don't even get to hear him sing lead on them.

Beck doesn't sing...at all. He's working with pretty much every classic rocker singer out there though...and now The Beach Boys are added to the list! LOL

Beck doesn't "noodle" either... Roll Eyes

I would really love to hear Brian singing those two songs though. I think it would be much cooler for this show to be one continuous thought. Essentially, lessen the numbers in Brian's band, include Al David & Jeff Beck, and just do a 3 hour show of back and forth with each other's music. Now THAT would open the floor for creativity.

And don't take the band member comment too seriously...I know I was almost burned at the stake last time I suggested such an abomination... Roll Eyes

Forget the Yardbirds' tunes - Jeff should do his old Stevie Wonder showcase (from the "orange" album) I Got to Have a Song, with Blondie steppin' out on vocals.   Wait, edit... RubberSoul13, Jeff can sing.  Check the mid-'60's track Hi Ho Silver Lining.  Youtube has a recent version and the original -very mod

This review should give hope to aspiring writers everywhere, because if you can't turn in something less overwrought, biased and badly researched, then I'd be very surprised. Awful, awful, awful... but at least it mentions some of Beck's songs.

Forget the Yardbirds' tunes

Apparently they have ! The encore consisted entirely of BB tracks, except for "Danny Boy".

Yeah...awful is a good word. I don't understand the Mike bashing...of the 25 various songs Brian performs throughout the evening...only EIGHT of them haven't appeared on a recent M&B setlist.

That does count as roughly a third of his set list.
