Brief first comment:

I can't believe what I just read. I feel part of an elaborate hoax...  Wink

...and I want that hoax to come to Europe anytime soon after the US leg (well, that is something of a remark with an inner inconsistency, but I will let it stand, folks).

Quick, someone turn on the Love-Signal, he needs defending!

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/brian-wilson-pulls-off-a-surprise-pet-sounds-show-in-new-york-20131016

Brian Wilson Pulls Off a Surprise 'Pet Sounds' Show In New York
Alongside Jeff Beck, Wilson proved he can get along just fine without Mike Love

When Brian Wilson last took the stage at New York's Beacon Theater, a little less than a year and a half ago, he was once again a member of the Beach Boys, content to stay perched behind a piano on the side of the stage while his cousin (and longtime nemesis) Mike Love pranced around and dominated the proceedings as much as possible. It was a reunion few could have ever imagined, and nobody was surprised when it imploded months later. Each side has their story of what happened, but nobody disputes that Wilson is now once again a solo artist and Mike Love's Beach Boys are now available for bookings at a casino or state fair near you.

Wilson wasn't about to simply give up and leave the Beach Boys banner in the hands of his litigious cousin. Instead, he put together a coalition of the willing Beach Boys - including founding members David Marks and Al Jardine alongside 1970s Beach Boy Blondie Chaplin and Brian's incredible longtime backing band - and hit the road with a show that blows Love's tired oldies revue completely out of the water. Last night, they revisted the Beacon with fantastic results.

[...]

It's easy to imagine Mike Love's reaction to this show: "What the hell is that guitarist without any sleeves? Why not do 'Kokomo,' 'Be True to Your School' and the car medley? People might not want to hear all of 'Shut Down' and 'Little Deuce Coup,' but you gotta play a little bit of them! Oh my god, not Pet Sounds! You're doing all of it? I don't remember half those songs and that'll take up too much time and you won't be able to squeeze in the John Stamos drum solo. What's that? No Stamos? How can you say such a thing? Tell me you're at least doing 'Surfing' Safari.' Good god, I haven't done a show without that song since Kennedy was in the White House. And don't even tell me that's Blondie Chaplin up there! Didn't my brother take care of him back in '73?"

His vision of the Beach Boys and Brian's was always very different. The reunion tour last year was a lot of fun, but it clearly wasn't meant to last. Anybody that wants to hear "Kokomo" and listen to a Full House cast member play drums can easily find that show, but Brian Wilson has once again proved he doesn't need to own the name "The Beach Boys" to carry on the group's legacy.

"The sets are almost entirely identical! Also, 2004-5 UK tours!"

"Why doesn't Brian sing all the songs?"

"Cowsill sings Wild Honey!"

"Poor journalism."

"Brianistas! Brianistas! Objective journalists always have my opinions, that way I don't have to read them."

"Carl's estate will never turn down that BIG FAT CHECK."

"Bruce Johnston has tender eyes."

"Why can't we be happy to have BOTH bands, I feel endlessly blessed being able to see The Beach Boys fractured yet Mike still operating under the name."

"Performed all of Pet Sounds? Mike regularly does ALL of '...Salute Nascar' which makes NORMAL PEOPLE shriek with delight, not New York hipsters!"

"Yeah, well what about those 3/5 full shows in Florida and Texas? HUH?! HUHHH?!?! That negates all the good reviews."

"Mike is rich and you're all just jealous of a man you never met."

That about covers it. So... lunch?

What damn difference does it make? That's my reaction.

Lemme put it this way: If you're not a fan of the music of Brian Wilson and/or the Beach Boys, why would you even care about the background info that keeps popping up in reviews of Brian Wilson shows? Most of these reviews are from Brian Wilson fans. They may be journalists, but they're fans, too. It's nice that they get their agenda off their chest, but are they accomplishing anything other than preaching to the converted? I doubt they alienate anyone, because I don't think people who go to Mike Love shows care one way or the other. They're not passionate about it. For people who don't like the Beach Boys or Brian Wilson, they're not going to be apt to check out either show. The inclusion of that stuff in the reviews is just a big yawn.

Again, I gotta ask this -- for people who don't like Mike Love to begin with, why did you want the reunion to continue, anyways? Isn't is better to see Brian without Mike "dominating," as this reviewer put it? Would he have enjoyed this latest Beacon show and "Pet Sounds" recreation any better if Mike were there?

Another "Sail On Sailor" with Blondie from October 13th.  And still no "Wild Honey"!

http://youtu.be/wFZzzTdf1XI

I could have done without the video of Brian's colonoscopy running behind Blondie, thankyouverymuch.

Right, that's why you rush to his defense minutes after the Love-Signal flashes in the sky. A big yawn. That you are passionate about and argue about at every opportunity.

Why is that stuff in there? It gets the fans frothing at the mouth and creates drama and narrative for casual readers of Rolling Stone. Unfortunately, the redeem Mike Love's public image campaign hasn't really been entirely effective, so journalists do tend to compare and contrast Brian and Mike.

Anybody find that Wild Honey video yet?

Who called you a Mike Love fan? I just think you love to argue this stuff. It's obviously of interest to you, so I'm not buying this "big yawn" thing. It's about as convincing as your emoticons.

It'd all be worth it just to see Bruce in a Robin outfit.

Boston review:

http://popdose.com/a-fans-notes-brian-wilson-jeff-beck-wang-theatre-boston-ma/

Brian Wilson and his amazing band were up first. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again … this is the best live band on the road these days. These guys are accomplished multi-instrumentalists, and they sing like angels. Adding original Beach Boys David Marks and Al Jardine to this crew has only made them stronger and rendered the vocal mix more authentic than ever.

[...]

I’ve seen comments from members of Wilson’s band in which even they admit to wondering how this collaboration was going to work. Now that they’ve been out on the road for a few weeks, it’s clear that those questions have been answered. While the music is already great, I have no doubt that this show will continue to develop as the musicians learn more about each other. So if the show is coming to your town, don’t miss the chance to see it. It’s a once-in-a-musical-lifetime thing.

The loveshack, loveboat, lovemobile (car), lovemobile (phone), lovetriangle (Mike's ill fated tablet), and lovemedo-bedoo are all trademarks of the Lovefoundation.
