Ok ya'll I need help! I'm in a mix club wherein there are 12 members and each member has a month and for their month they send out a mix to all the other mix clubbers (via old fashioned compact disc). The vast majority of the time, the music on the various mixes is brand spankin new and super indie. It's really fun. For my month, what I want to do in addition to my obligatory indie mix is to provide a bonus beach boys mix. So what should I put on?

I'm thinking of starting with Our Prayer.... but then I get stuck.... lame, I know. can ya'll help me out?? This needs to be good!!!

Cabinessence first track. I Just Wasn't Made For These Times, second. You'll blow minds with the first if it's hitting new ears that haven't heard it. And with the second, you'll tap into a recognition vibe among those hipsters who are Mad Men fans when they hear it and think of the LSD party scene on the show.

After that you're on you're own.  Grin  Although "Busy Doin Nothin" has a lounge vibe that people into that scene might not realize is a BB's cut. And "Diamond head" similarly works with the Tiki-Exotica crowd who wouldn't know it's a BB's album track.

Throw 'Punchline' in there as an unexpected curve ball. Punky surf rock fun. Lightens up the mood.

I don't know what you mean, but thanks everyone else for your thoughts! Much appreciated, and I think I have at least half to two thirds of my mix ready now. Sweet.

Sorry for being vague, in my mind it seemed clear  Cheesy  I just meant attempts to sell the Beach Boys to hipsters. I just don't get it. Why do hipsters need to be shown the way of the Beach Boys?

Think about it. Timmy C is a "Hipster" already. Just look at it as him turning on his friends to The Beach Boys.

"Little Bird"*
"Forever"

I can't believe All I Wanna Do isn't mentioned yet. That's the hippest song of all and it predates Chillwave by at least 40 years or so.

Big Sur (Landlocked Version)
Piano outro from Tears in the Morning
All I Wanna Do
Caroline No
Girl Don't Tell Me
Heroes and Villains (Smile)
Wonderful (Smile)
Cabinessence
Sweet Mountain (Spring)
Solar System
Lady
Child is Father of the Man (BW)

I love "Meant For You" as an opener too. Our Prayer would be a good midway point. You could tell them it's the start of side two. Hipsters love to think in terms of records. Now, of course most anything off of Pet Sounds, Sunflower or select choices from Love You should be the oddity you're looking for. As for other random cuts I enjoy:

I'll Bet He's Nice, All I Wanna Do, Girl Don't Tell Me, She's Goin Bald, Little Bird, Never Learn Not To Love (and give em the backstory), A Day in the Life of a Tree, Feel Flows, Surf's Up, Disney Girls. Should be good for now. Sounds like a fun thing to be a part of. I need to find something like that.

Ah! I see. I actually quite agree with you - there is absolutely no need whatsoever to get the hipsters' seal of approval. In my case, most of the mix clubbers I referred to are not actually hipsters. But that's beside the point. And in fact, you really are correct. I should just share my favorite BB songs no matter what. If they like it, great. And if they don't - f em!!! Thanks monicker.

I had a feeling they weren't hipsters after reading the mixes were passed around on CDR. If these were hipsters, the mixes would be on cassette, which is still for me the best and most personal way to deliver a mix because you actually need to do more than point and click to assemble it.  Cheesy

The art of making people you care about a mix tape is one that I hope never goes away no matter what the medium. And I'm sorry but making a "playlist" just doesn't qualify.

And if these folks are open-minded they'll like whatever BB's tracks are included, within some boundaries of good taste of course. meaning no live recordings of Mike singing Be True To Your School post-2000.  Grin

Hipsters are into the irony and hip Beach Boys music is too "in" these days so true hipsters should get Keepin' the Summer Alive. Either that or do a dubstep Denny's Drums.

The best thing about hipsters is they will deny that they are hipsters, while at the same time they will give you sh*t for saying they are a hipster, because in their mind they are totally NOT a hipster. They just happen to live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with a bike as their only mode of transportation, along with a look that seems as though they don't care, but in reality is finely tuned.

Here is the exact tracklist you should use, at least if your aim is to give them something unexpected (i've used this same one to surprise and open/change minds myself). Trust me, this is the clincher...

1. Our Prayer (20/20)
2. All I Wanna Do
3. Long Promised Road
4. She's Goin' Bald
5. Celebrate The News
6. Trader
7. Cabinessence (20/20)
8. Baby Blue
9. Feel Flows
10. Busy Doin Nothin
11. Til I Die
12. Holy Man (w/ T Hawkins)

Awesome playlist.  Cool Guy  Dropping "I Feel So Fine" in there is particularly inspired.
