I recently figured out that the 1990 version of I Do is a different mix than the 2001 version, but I haven't been able to find a place to purchase it.  All of the mp3 sites like Amazon seem to only offer tracks from the 2001 version of the Surfer Girl/Shut Down two-fer, and online sales of the CD either do not specify the year or specify 2001.

But I know there must be a lot of 1990 CDs out there, and maybe even a place to purchase the 1990 I Do mp3 or flac.  Does anyone know of any they could point me to?

Ebay is a good place for those 1990 ones.

I just discovered the difference, but it was in a thread from four years ago.  One poster said that Capitol couldn't find the mixes it had done earlier.  Not sure what the differences are.

We should really get a listing together of any and all differences between the 1990/2001 twofers so that interested parties know if they need both copies or if the much easier to locate 2001 twofers will suffice.  According to the thread Jeff quoted "I Do" is indeed different and the thread also quotes "Old Man River" from the Friends/20-20 twofer is different on each issue.

Are there any others?

Edit: Thread also quotes "The Baker Man" and possibly "Cindy" as being deviating mixes across the two issues.

Regarding "I Do". I have the 1990 version but not the 2001 version. What's the difference in the mix? Lead vocal pushed up in the mix or you can hear the backgrounds better? What.

Ever heard the stereo version of "I Do"?

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

At very least, the 2001 version is stereo.

I really love "I Do" and was kind of amazed that it wasn't included on the MIC track listing. Seemed like a natural inclusion due to its quality and relative scarcity.

Here's a quick A/B of the 1990 vs. 2001 versions of I Do:

1990
  • 2:05 in length, muddy sounding compared to 2001 version.
  • A narrow stereo field.

2001
  • The track is preceded by a 7 second session excerpt.
  • 2:03 in length, brighter sounding compared to 1990 version.
  • A wider stereo field.
  • 24 seconds of silence between the end of I Do and a hidden track of a 29 second acapella outro of Ganz Allein.

"All Dressed Up For School" is different as well. For the '90, the first few seconds are in mono, and then the track switches to stereo. For the '01, stereo all the way.
