Hey all - question: can we compile a list (if it hasn't already been done elsewhere on the board) of all those were invited to be official Beach Boys but turned down the offer?

I guess the list would at least include:

Glen Campbell
David Marks (early 70s)
Billy Hinsche??
Matt Jardine??

I don't think Matt was ever asked, but I seem to remember that Daryl Dragon may have been asked, but my memory may be playing tricks on me.

The Brianista Prayer

Oh Brian
Thou Art In Hawthorne,
Harmonied Be Thy name
Your Kingdom Come,
Your Steak Well Done,
On Stage As It Is In Studio,
Give Us This Day, Our Shortenin' Bread
And Forgive Us Our Bootlegs,
As We Also Have Forgiven Our Wife And Managers,
And Lead Us Not Into Kokomo,
But Deliver Us From Mike Love.
Amen.  ---hypehat

Seem to remember that Bruce initially suggested Ed Carter as Glen's replacement, but when Carter turned it down Bruce stepped in himself.

True. I asked Bruce years ago on the ego board. He had stated many times that he had been asked to find a replacement for Glen and I was wondering who would be crazy enough to turn down the offer. Ed was the one I remember.

Jimmy Griffin (later co-founder of Bread) was one of the early names mooted as a touring replacement for Brian, pre-Bruce, tho' I don't think he was ever actually offered the role. Bruce confirmed that with me a few years ago...

Wasn't Barry Cowsill asked to join years before his brother John joined the touring group ?

Indeed he was, early 70s. The rest of the band warned him off.

No, it wasn't Barry Cowsill.   It was his older brother and lead singer of most of the Cowsills' stuff - Billy Cowsill.  He told me the story (in person in 2003) of going to ask Brian Wilson personally if it was a good idea.  Brian in his own odd ball way suggested it wasn't.  So Billy moved on...

Too bad.  Billy Cowsill was a brilliant lead vocalist and harmony singer.  He was up there in the league of the boys.  Serious claim, I know - but if you heard him live you would understand.  Sadly the Cowsills songs didn't provide the best opportunity to show off the range of Billy's skills.  If you like country rock check out the two cds by The Blue Shadows (On The Floor Of Heaven and Lucky To Me).  Also Billy's last band The Co-Dependents had two live cds (Live at the Mecca cafe vol. 1 and 2).  If you don't think the singing is world class brilliant on those 4 cds I will buy them back from you.  I mean it.  John Cowsill is quoted, "Billy was our Brian Wilson".  Great singer and vocal arranger.

Did I just get the chance to correct AGD???  What is happening in the world.  I am going to buy a lottery ticket.... Smiley  Grin  Cheesy

Those Cowsills all look the same to me. OK, except for Barbara & Susan.  Grin
