In a way it would be cool if they did Kokomo, I guess. Doing a Beach Boys song that isn't a Brian Wilson song would be kind of like saying that they are now carrying the Beach Boys torch.

I still wonder what the DBA tour is all about. Still only, what, 7 shows announced. Are they paving the way for a change in the name license. If this is a trial run, they will do the song.

If Brian and Al get the license from BRI, it forces ML and Bruce to tour with them or go home.

Brian may be only playing six dates because that's all he feels like right now. Having back surgery twice must mean his problems with it are significant, and it's hard to travel and sit on a stage with those types of problems. He may need the lighter schedule to get more rest in order to heal.  Having a cursory few dates may be a way to show Mike they're still there if there's any possibility of touring as the BB next year, and if not, there could be more B, A , & D dates next summer.  No one seems to know if or when the license may be up.

I've never been a big fan of Mike using the name. But I don't think Al and Brian are moving toward  trying to take the license away, nor does forcing Mike to tour with them sound like a good idea or an idea that would work. I firmly am highly critical of Mike nixing more reunion activities, but for better or worse I don't think Brian and Al will try to take the license back.

And I highly doubt they will perform "Kokomo", as Brian never has and Al only seems to add it to his setlist seemingly begrudgingly when he's doing a show where the audience would absolutely expect it.

Why bother with it when they will do "Summers Gone" so much better.

Just wild speculation on my part as I anxiously await news on the boxset.

The whole way Brian's solo shows are marketed though is that it's the 'arty', 'classy' show where you're going to see a real genius being a genius singing his genius genius without any of that evil Mike Love commercialism...

They did Kokomo during C50 and Brian seemed to love seeing all the generations just meld under the influence of the music, and rock out all together.  It was connected with a blockbuster movie.  It would be a very cool addition to any setlist and I hope Brian, Al and David do. It is just such a fun song.

We don't have to be arty 24/7; it's just too much work.

Brian's shows, too, have a fun "party aspect."

I'm not saying they don't, or that they *should* be "arty 24/7", but that that's how they're marketed. A substantial proportion of Brian's audience think Mike Love is the devil (in a couple of cases I think they actually think this literally) and that Kokomo is everything they hate. And certainly there would be no positive reason *for* Brian to perform the song, given that he had no involvement in the record.

Personally, though, I wouldn't want to hear them play Kokomo anyway. It's not an especially good song, Brian and David weren't on it at all, and Al isn't at all audible on the record, didn't have any creative input into it and doesn't seem to like it.

Yeah, so it makes sense he does Monster Mash, Drive-In, Salt Lake City etc instead of Kokomo.....the real artistic triumphs.

I'm not saying the shows have any actual relation to the marketing. What I am saying is that a substantial proportion of the Brianista contingent will go away from a show *thinking* it was like that so long as nothing too associated with Mike Love happens.

Andrew - I was agreeing with you.  Al and Carl were on Kokomo.  And it was a huge hit, alongside the goofy Fat Boys Wipe Out, and, for me the "Boys were back in town!"  At the time, I was teaching four year olds who came into my classroom singing,"Aruba, Jamaica..." and they were really in the right place to be singing the Beach Boys...

Just because someone is not on a particular song, doesn't mean they can't perform it.  Dave performed Pet Sounds, the Instrumental, at C50, and he wasn't on that. But he swung right into it as though he never missed a beat.  Music is their bridge and working on each other's stuff, is such respect for the other's art.  It's all good.   Wink

That's not what AH was getting at. Those songs do not have nearly the 'reputation' "Kokomo" has with 'Brianistas'.

If you are actually putting those latter two on a par with "Kokomo" we'll need to have some words.

Also, "Drive-In" and "Salt Lake City" are Brian Wilson compositions.  As for "Monster Mash," it was a staple of Beach Boys live shows in the early sixties, when the band was at its most popular and Brian was at his most active in the group so it probably brings back good memories for him.

I do hope they'll do "Getcha Back" since it was a nice showcase for Dave on the Beach Boys tour.

He liked Mount Vernon & Fairway too.

I listened to Kokomo this afternoon on GV boxset....I think I like Mount Vernon better.

I dont know, Kokomo gets you kind of groovin at first -- but before its over you wish it would end.   Grin

Hey Little Tomboy is creepy. Banging women by the pool is fun and conjures up warm summer thoughts a Beach Boys song should.

Kokomo isn't bad! I like it as much as or possibly more than Drive In or Salt Lake City. It's only my take, but I see "Kokomo" as such a hated song only for the fact that it cemented the Beach Boys with their family/fun in the sun/tropical party persona with the public more than their artistic/groundbreaking side. I think since then there's been this huge stink to say, "if you think Kokomo is a good song, there's something wrong with you", or "Kokomo sucks! It isn't SMiLE", or something. It was such a phenomenally big record for a reason - it's catchy, it has nice vocals from Carl and Mike, it's fun.

Compare it with "Summer of Love" or anything off of SIP...now THAT is on par with nothing The Beach Boys did in pretty much any aspect of their careers.

A substantial proportion of Brian's audience are elitist schmucks who listen to nothing BUT the Beach Boys.

And then there's the substantial proportion of the Smiley Smile moderators who call Mike Love "Michael" all the time for some odd reason, even though he's only called that sparingly by friends or bandmates. Odd.

I don't share the hatred of Kokomo that dominates this board. I guess it's popular to hate it because it's Mike's song, and Brian wasn't on it, but I think it deserved its hit status. It was always nice for me to hear the Beach Boys on the radio. When Still Cruisin' came out, I thought for sure it would be a top 40 hit - how could it fail as the followup to a worldwide #1?

Mike and Bruce did do Til I Die in 2004 I think in the UK.

Nah not a downer, she just saw what I saw. Of course it could be about anything, but for whatever reason he shut down for the one song that night.
