The worst thing about Last House On The Left is what happens to her character. Getting it bitten off is too lenient a fate for Weasel after what he did to Phyllis. A thousand eternities spent burning in Hell with RichardHodgekins-blaring cans strapped to his head would be too lenient.

Lucy Grantham channels amazing energy in that part. Love her in the scene on the steps when she's trying to score off Junior..."TwENTy doLLARs??? And it's ColUMBian???"

Other cast-members' allusions to a "non-mainstream" pre Last House... career aside - was she in anything else? She should have been.

You fucking nailed it. Amazing performance. "STUPID DYKE!"
The look on her face when she gets stabbed, her zombie crawl to the tree. These images are imprinted on my brain and I wish I could scrub them out. Pure soul-damage.
Haven't seen her in anything else. Was a real shocker to see her in the documentary, or to see her stir and start to get up at the end of the unedited murder footage. The fact of those actresses not being in anything else added to the snuffy vibe of the murders.
Is that film unedited in the UK yet?

No. Saw it complete on pirate-tape when I was 13/14, but the DVD has cuts. The deleted sequences are offered in frames, though, so you can kind of watch the missing bits in slow-mo. Which *actually feels sicker*. Dumb.
Almost mentioned about the documentary with the region1 - haven't seen it, but I ordered the DVD from USAmazon the other day when I found out she was in it. The region2 has a different making-of thing. She's not interviewed for that one.

Totally agree. The stabbed-look is a vile fuckin' moment. Her defiance and courage is beautiful, though. The blood-spit in Weasel's ugly dumb face rules.

The US DVD incorporates all available footage from a few cuts, with extra dialogue in the humiliation scene ("Phyllis, he cut me"), extra porn dialogue in the de-Willieing of Weasel, totally different dialogue when the folks find Mari in the woods (ALIVE! Huh?).
You're gonna dig the USA DVD.
Another shot that makes me want to die: Weasel picking the weeds off his sticky, bloody fingers.

Horrid, man.

Yeah, looking forward to seeing the stuff on the US release.
There's a piece on the region2, "Scoring Last House" - Hess talking about his music for the film, and becoming real excitedly articulate in digging on his own sense of absorption in the role. Especially the rape sequence.
That smarmy prick who plays Junior is worse, sniggering about how he threatened an already freaked Cassell into getting a scene down. With Hess, it's borderline as to whether his delight is related to the plausibility of the scene or just a product of some vile misogynystic/sadistic streak, but Sheffler's plain satisfaction at his successful intimidation of a woman warrants a good punching.

Amazing, amazing book. One of the best detailed looks at the making of a film ever.
I would LOVE to see those Region 2 extras!!!!!!!! I'll have to pick up a copy on my UK visit in August.
Sheffler is a prick, eh?? Yeah, i'd like to punch his frog-imitatin' face right in. Take this, Willow.
Ya know Hess wrote sh*t for Elvis, right?

Cheers for the word on the book. I'll check it out.
Yeah, I heard that about Hess! There's a bit in the extras for the UKDVD where you see him plucking through 'Wait For The Rain', fucking up and forgetting a chord, then stomping like a kid in a tanty and telling the cameraman that he can't go 'til he's remembered it. Funny stuff.
It's weird, he's a brash macho motherfucker, but his writing for that film is sensitive. That movie's first 1/2 - beauty/grim portent/ensuing evil - is nailed in 'Wait For The Rain'.

That Hess tune that plays while Mari is throwing up and praying, then walking into the river with dignity, "and now you're all alone..", that never fails to choke me up. And knowing it's the torturer himself singing her lament, man, that's the type of paradoxical disturbance that real dreams are made of.
