was in development and introduced it to Brian do you think Brian would've added it to the album? Musically it would've been the perfect fit.

Ah yes, one of the most tantalising what if's of the BB's history! I think Brian would have been really excited about it and promised a slot for Denny's song on the next album, but I'd wager his PS vision was so strong he wanted to do it all by himself. And thank God he did. IMO, Be With Me, while a-okay song, would seriously compromise the flow of the album, no matter where you'd put it. It's not melodic enough to fit, and it would be one slow dirge too many.

Be With Me has an excellent backing track but very weak lyrics so Tony Asher would have been required to write new ones. As it stands Be With Me seems to be considered the 7th best song on 20/20 (that's the way it seemed on the rank the tracks thread a while ago anyway) and isn't up to the standard of Pet Sounds.

Thank goodness opinions aren't formed by committee.

It's a great song, but I don't think it would have fitted on Pet Sounds, the whole point of Pet Sounds was that it was Brian at the height of his creative vision.

Love Van McCoy's arrangement too, and I'm not sure a Pet Sounds era treatment would have been best for the song

Incidentally I listened to Be With Me yesterday and thought, great production, I wish Surf's Up (the song) had been produced with gorgeous strings like that.

Weak lyrics? Really? Personally I enjoy them, they're very simplistic in a distinctiveley '68/'69 fashion. Probably very much inspired by DW's socializing with Manson.

I only like the verses of Be With Me. The choruses sound force and don't really suit the rest of the piece.

Yeah, very weak. They don't conform to even the most basic standards of lyricism. They don't rhyme or scan properly (anticipating is a syllable too short) and the verses are about completely unrelated subjects. They sound like guide lyrics which should have been replaced later.
