Outstanding piece.

"Such sublime music coming from such strange vessels."

Great article, made my morning! Cool

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

That said, there is one mistake I noticed: Carl didn't handle the lead after Brian - it's Al who sang the song. But all in all, kudos to Mr. Zahl for this fascinating writing! And thanks to whoislikegod for bringing it up to this board!

I didn't notice this detail the first time that I read it but it looks like the author changed it.  It now says that Al took the lead.

The Brian-less Beach Boys live leads of DWB have had many different combinations through the years:

1969: Al and Bruce - verses, Al - chorus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDEpGhpeMoA @ 1:29

In Concert: Al - verses, Carl - chorus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkeJ4OdwVM8

Belgium 1987: Carl - part of verses, Jeff - remainder of verses, chorus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5I2164jnQk @ :38

Japan 1991: Adrian Baker all the way through  Tongue http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C4o6OT2FNQ @ 2:48

1995 - Matt Jardine all the way through. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBNx2DuI3Vg

A bit off topic, but Bruce sounds great on "Please Let Me Wonder" and the Brian-falsetto on "I Get Around" in this clip.
