Today seen real definition re: "xoxo" - it's "kiss with hug" smiley. Till today, read it in Internet replies as laughter, a la Santa, synonym with "hohoho". In Russian "x" read as [h] but tougher, i.e. "xaxaxa" = "hahaha". I read some things in Russian way, still. Used to it (blame it to fact we share few the same-looking letters) thus seeing "xoxo" to this reader = smb. laughs channeling Santa. But...it's smiley sign "kiss with hug". Who knew. Roll Eyes Frankly, doesn't make sense.

Well, you know... the internet is full of nonsense. Grin
I remember seeing "xoxoxoxo" in the liner notes of a long-forgotten mid-'60s album as a way of censoring a swearword--something like "stop playing that xoxoxoxo guitar and let's write some songs!"
I do like the Santa connection though. LOL

It's been unbearably hot here in NL too. Luckily it's cooled off somewhat now. Crazy stuff. Huh

Will anybody explain what does it mean when smb. in booth shakes the telephone metal box? I'd seen it in few films, f.ex. in "Dial 'M' For Murder". Ray Milland stands in booth listening in the other end to his wife fighting with baddie. Then when she killed baddie, she sees she didn't get phone to its place, it's hanging. She quickly tells to get the police - silence. She says if they hear her, to which Milland shakes telephone box, coin-rattling - THEN he gives voice. What's the trick?

Really like the fact I'm usually right but hate when nobody admits it, praises or says sth. nice. Instead, they blame ("My goodness", & I didn't even start the eye rolling business) or keep silence. Like, smb. really hated username changes. What did I do? Written who's who, entire list in Welcome thread few yrs back, including wjcrerar=SaltyMarshmallow. I got thanks. Then they suddenly forgot it (weird), like I shouldn't even waste time typing it (since then deleted) & start welcoming SaltyMarshmallow. If SM didn't come out backing things I stated, would they be skeptical about me telling it's not newbie, it's wjcrerar, would they believe? Nope, they wouldn't of course. Thankfully, wjcrerar/SM showed peeps I been right about everything I say. Get that, folks. Now, people will respect I AND believe things I say *immediately*, yes? 3D

Youtube's funny place right? Hate it big time when commentators repeat previous UNfunny cheesy joke ad infinitum. Do people REALLY chicken out being original, individual & likewise? I DISrespect people like that. People like sheep with collective thinking. Really dumb thing to be. But then, it's THEIR problem.

^ Good points. 3D

It's fine to see people caring to show they speak lotsa different languages (can't say I envy it...Am fine with *just English*, says I proudly Cheesy RR takes easy path!) but if everybody speak English here anyway, think it's best to restrict it to English for easy communication around board, no?

No! Using a phrase that is commonly understood is fine. If a person does not understand it, let it go, or if you're curious, translate it. I have never had a problem understanding messages here or in other forums. I feel if someone is distressed by the use of foreign phrases, that person might be a tad on the defensive side or insecure.

I speak only English. Well, let me qualify that. I am just about fluent in beginner level Spanish, a language that most people, when they see me or my surname, expect me to speak. It's taken a lifetime to get to the level that I am. For me, it's a bit shameful only being able to speak one language.

What you feel is fine despite disagreeing 200% with it. It's inaccurate assumption - I hate people using different language bits here & there due to these:
- All languages = ugly except English, hate what they sound like.
- If I start saying privet instead of hello thinking "hey, it's super simple greeting word, bet every foreigner knows it's hello", would it make ANY sense WHY I used it when I could easily say...hello? I should tell people "gee guys it ain't rocket science, use google translate for pete's sake"? It doesn't look respectful towards everybody. & too random. Why not write whole phrase/post in English if you can instead of randomly adding foreign language words? Like "Privet guys. I got new breakfast today - konfety with tea. What do you think, it's good to eat? Pishite!".

Re: "shameful" - we'll agree to disagree.

The easy path, eh? There can't be many here apart from you who can play linguistic games in a language other than their native tongue. You're pretty well in a field of one, RR.

And since you ask..., no, I shan't be reading Three Men in a Boat in Russian! LOL I might consider it if I had the nine lives of your feline friends but not before then!

So yes, contrary to what you think, I have the greatest admiration for your linguistic skills.  Wink
