Looking again, but still looks to me like simple sunlight fading: different colored inks fade at a different rate, which could make the image look different when it really isn't. Used to be a printer. Note, Dennis hair is a completely different color. Could also be down to the difference in inks from country to country or even plant to plat. In theory, there's an industry standard, but in practice there are differences even between batches.

The only difference (other than what AGD points out" is that Al's wild blowing hair in one seems to have been very neatly rounded in the other. I say "seems' though as these aren't the highest-res scans;  I'd need the actual product in my hands to tell the real difference.

Seems obvious to me that there indeed is a difference. Just look at the hair behind Al's ear.

I just compared my two vinyl copies of Pet Sounds, a German duophonic version vs. the 2006 double LP, and I'm 100% sure that the photo on the duophonic version was indeed airbrushed. The hair on the back of Al's head is shorter and Carl's double chin has magically disappeared.

The pictures are cropped differently - look at the space from Al's elbow to the right border.  Also the pic looks stretched on the right, as Dennis and Al's bodies look wider.  I agree Al's hair looks doctored in the left pic.

I think that's the  cover that's cropped, not just the pic – note how the Capitol logo has been sliced through?

And there's the major difference – one's yellow on green background, one's reversed out black on green background

that is indeed the nicest looking one. The fonts of the original are abit off-putting to me (tho they are classic!)

^^ Yup, and it's also one of the very best mono versions, IMHO.

Also, earlier versions list Sloop John B and Caroline No over the list of songs (because they were singles at the time) while later editions put them with the rest of the track order.

Just fading and cropping, that's all. Little changes between runs. No big deal.

Now how 'bout that worm on some copies of Smiley Smile and some that don't?

When it comes to vinyl versions of Pet Sounds, the one that's bundled with Carl & The Passions and the '74 release (brown cover shown above) are still the best sound quality. The re-issued one from the 80's with the dark green label ain't bad either.

"This record is pressed in monophonic sound, the way Brian cut it."

I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Yeah, that's a good one, except for those two little black squiggly marks on the front cover....

Notice that the word 'wasn't' sits over Brian's head on the original cover. Is this a clue that Brian was dead and replaced by an imposter?

Who is the doofus who edited Mike out of that Pet Sounds cover? Was Brian really wasn’t? Did someone hack Andrew Doe’s account and write the most uncharacteristic post, a week ahead of April Fools'?

The Smiley Smile worm holds the answers to these questions and more.

With this thread, our collective beach boys fandom has reached an all time low. That's quite a depressingly impressive feat.  Grin

kookadams is right. I checked my several versions of the Pet Sounds album. The only vinyl version with the untouched photo was the 180g "limited edition" reprint. The old duophonic print, Heartical Don's version and even the 1996 stereo print use a retouched photo. Al's hair has been cleaned and Carl's second chin softened. I'll try to scan it. On the photos from that link you might think it's just a printing/color fading artefact, but if you see it in front of you, it is obvious.

The 1990 CD uses the untouched photo too, but I needed a lens to check.

Yup. They seriously devalue its 'mint' status in collectorland. Sad, this.

So, here we are.

Left side is from the 180g vinyl cover, right side Heartical Don's version.

What does our former printer AGD say about this? I'm positive this was retouched.

I'm not sure about this detail though:

Could be due to different contrast ratios. Wink 2

 Roll Eyes  ^^

So what do we have, folks?

Mike's gone missing, which confirms my theory that he died in a levitating accident, albeit at a different point in time, when he did not know TM yet. That is odd.

There are Jardine twins. Two brothers, looking strikingly similar (monozygotic for the cogniscenti), but the facial features are proof at close inspection. A lot of dental expertise in one band.

Upshot: I think I chose the right avatar.
