Anyone a fan of these guys work?
I think
Back Stabbers by the O'Jays
,
Drowning in the Sea of Love
by Joe Simon
and
A Brand New Me by Dusty Springfield
are really fantastic albums while
360 degrees of Billy Paul
is pretty good too.
Their stuff seems to move away from soul into more disco/funk after that which is unfortunate at least from my point of view

Yes, a very big fan. My favorite stuff of theirs is the work with Jerry Butler. Hey Western Union Man, Never Give You Up, Only The Strong Survive, Lost, etc.

I love that stuff. The Delfonics ("Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time"), The Stylistics ("Betcha By Golly Wow" and others), Billy Paul ("Me And Mrs. Jones"), Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes ("If You Don't Know Me By Now" and "The Love I Lost"), The Spinners ("Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" and "Back Stabbers" and others), The Intruders ("I'll Always Love My Mama"), The Three Degrees ("When Will I See You Again") and others - all great music, all timeless sounds.

"Family Reunion" the 1975 O'Jays album, is the creative peak of Gamble-Huff and TSOP IMHO.
Don't forget the first Jacksons albums for CBS "The Jackson" from 1976 and "Goin' Places" from 1977, very good both.

Yes, really good producers/writers. I liked how they incorporated orchestral type arrangements into soul music, similar to what Barry White did too. I agree that the two albums they worked on with The Jacksons which was when they were signed to Philadelphia International Records then (which IIRC was a Epic Records subsidiary, which was part of CBS) are worth checking out.

Mr. Huff died a few years ago, stabbed to death, I think. Kenny Gamble founded an organization focused on revitalizing neighborhoods from a holistic standpoint in Philly. (Universal Companies). I taught last year in one of the charter schools they run.

As of the end of last year, the music program was cut from the high school's offerings. Pretty shocking, given the fact that the founder of the organization is Kenny Gamble!
