I have not heard this group's music - will be cool to have a first listen when the website traffic slows down.

If you're not familiar with the term "shoegaze", I'd describe their sound as "atmospheric, psychedelic, noise-rock". It's called "shoegaze" because the guitarists use so many effects pedals that they are constantly looking down at the floor when they play live.

Just as much Sonic Youth and Jesus and Mary Chain influence as there is BB influence. It took me a few listens to really get into them.

A  couple tracks from their previous album, 1991's Loveless:

Sometimes:

Billy Corgan recycled the sound of this song in several Smashing Pumpkins tunes.

I'm high as shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit and listening to the 24bit-96kHz FLAC (converted from the WAVs you receive) version... sadly on laptop speakers. It sounds to me like Kevin Shields has developed a love of funky grooves, and even some synths (and seemingly other electronic instruments?) abound! Yet it's still very textural and the guitars are never gone for too long as the main instrument so in some ways it's still shoegaze-y. It's like the soundtrack to a club where everyone takes huge hits of salvia before hittin' the dance floors! I can dig it.

edit: holy sh*t, "wonder 2"

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

Although to get serious, it's kind of insane to think that My Bloody Valentine have spent, give or take a few months, my entire life to release their new album.

I was 6 when Loveless came out, but I never actually listened to it until I was 22.  So I guess I've only been waiting 5 years.

Truly an incredible album and a worthy successor to the masterwork that is Loveless.

"wonder 2" is one of Kevin Shields' masterpieces and worth the wait. He said this album is influenced by "SMiLE" and he was right.

I'm 27. Are you saying you saw MBV way back in '84?

This is amazing. It has the same blissed out, trepanning vibe I get when listening to the slow bit from Child Is Father Of The Man, but stretched out over an entire album.

I wonder if m b v is My Bloody Valentine's SMiLE!... similarities include high expectations raised by a charmingly flawed masterpiece (let's face it, both Pet Sounds and Loveless have some weak points, the former has some production-related hiccups, the latter could have been better with the weaker tracks replaced with far superior ep tracks coming from the same era), a LONG period of waiting (well only 21 years with m b v instead of SMiLE!'s 37 (BWPS) to almost 45 years (Smile Sessions)), and content that is simultaneously of its time and yet timeless (OK, might be a bit early to say this about m b v but I believe it will sound relevant for many a year to come!) and whilst the familiar elements are there, both are a bit of a "and now for something completely different"-moment in their recording careers...
I should have made my debut post somewhere else but My Bloody Valentine and Beach Boys... one could survive pretty long on a desert island on them alone.

Well we know next to nowt about how MBV was recorded! Was it all early nineties sessions that he's been obsessively tweaking like a mad bastard for 20 years, did he sit on his arse watching telly and going out to tour occasionally before suddenly getting the whim to make an album in the last couple of years....

I've heard rumour that it's ALL Shields, but that seems a bit too crazy to be true, even for him.

It's pretty much a one-man show (stolen from Drowned in Sound):
"DiS: Could you give us a brief description or insight into what the record sounds like?

Debbie Googe: I really couldn't at all. I've heard more of the new Primal Scream record than I have the new My Bloody Valentine one!

DiS: So have you not laid down your parts on the record or even played on it?

Debbie Googe: No, most of it is stuff Kevin has done, certainly guitar wise. It's been a long process you know. The drums have been added then taken off at least once. His brother did them at one point, then Colm (O'Ciosoig) came in and redid them. There's some things Kevin can't do like the drums of Bilinda's (Butcher) vocals but everything else he can, and I'm certainly happy for him to do that."

And another thing that is indeed known about the making of the new album is that some of the material (maybe not the actual recordings but the songs) stems from some stuff done around 1992-97, as Shields said one motive to make a new album was the material - which he found on some cd's he came across when preparing the ep collection's bonus material - was actually better than the three songs that made it to the 'previously unreleased' section of the said collection.
