Are there ever any real gems on ebay or do they tend to be sold privately?

This can't be real right? That seems VERY low for a SMiLE cover slick.
And if it is real well...can I borrow $1200?

as they state, Confirmed real by TWO BBs Experts, so odds would be they're correct and it's legit. Really don't see a dealer such as Recordmecca risking their rep for $1200....
Having said that tho, it has been trimmed and mounted on art board, definitely lowering the value.
Maybe borrow on your life insurance....

Hmm, the tough thing about this version is that the variation with the Stereo bar at the top and Good Vibrations x3 was the version reproduced from the original color separations in 1978. The reproductions have "(R) 1978" at the bottom about 6mm below the (c) 1966 Capitol Records, Inc. -- right where this slick is trimmed. I have 3 or 4 of those 1978 reproductions that I could trim exactly like Record Mecca's, and perhaps aside from the amount of expected aging / yellowing for 1966 versus 1978 would be identical.
That being said, I agree with Chris that Record Mecca has a stellar reputation, and wouldn't risk it to pass off a fake.
Weren't they the ones who sold Durrie Parks' acetates? It certainly would add to the value / provenance if they would come out and say that this was Parks' copy (but I'm guessing it's not).

Thinking about your suggestion concerning the reproduction issue, I traded a number of ebay messages with Jeff At Recordmecca, finally suggesting he contact Peter( who I believe knows more about the Smile slicks than anyone else) which he did; Peter confirms the authenticity of this slick.

It is real. I know the person who Jeff got it from, although Jeff did NOT tell me the person's name. The guy's history with Capitol goes way back.

Absolutely the real thing. I've known Jeff for forty years (since Rhino Records/Westwood Blvd. days) and he's always been the realest of the real deals.

Not heard of this before… or maybe I read about it once and forgot:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/391151327090
From discogs:
"This was the first issue of this curious Phil Spector soundalike 'wall of sound' rendition of the classic 'Yes Sir, That's My Baby'. Featured on the recording are Brian Wilson, Jackie De Shannon, Sonny and Cher and Darlene Love."
Is this for real?

Wow -- never even heard of that towel. Chris/Jim, did you know about it before it popped up on eBay? There can't be many of those left. Great snag Jim!

I believe the copyright notice says "(C) Jack Nadel Intl"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Nadel_International

(PS: If someone can get hold of them, it might be a line on the elusive Beach Boys Party potato chips, because they probably produced them for Capitol.)

I certainly have never seen this promotional towel before and I've been collecting the band for a long time. At first glance, I thought it just promoted Capitol's roster, but then I noticed the Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) wording, making it a legitimate Beach Boys promo item for that album. I wonder how many were made and it seems very few survived.
The real shocker? $34. I bid a crazy amount expecting the bidding to go nuts at the very end. But nothing. It must have flown below the radar. And the best part? My dogs love being dried with it after their baths. I kid.
I think you're right, Lee, about the Jack Nadel, Inc -- it is very faded and hard to read, but it does line up like that.
So, who knows -- maybe the Party chips will surface one day. Along with the Honey House, Spring 1963, for the Honeys. Wonder what else is out there.

Jim, it couldn't have gone to a better guy. I'm glad I didn't see it, because I would have probably bid around $100 and it would have just run up the price for both of us. Congratulations!

In the $$ sense, better for you I didn't see it( still can't figure why) for the same reason I'd have probably thrown a $250 bid, hoping it would win for a lot less, and you'd have won for $255...

Speaking of potato chips, has anyone ever posted the link to the Billboard articles about them?

There was a long thread about this within the last couple of years -- some questioned whether the chips ever existed, given that no package has ever been found.
... But given the beach towel, maybe they're out there somewhere!

and.... if there's someone that wants an original Smile ad, this is the TeenSet that had it( odd that the seller doesn't mention it); and it doesn't come much cheaper:

Perhaps the seller didn't mention it because the magazine isn't intact. If the Smile ad is indeed included then it truly is a bargain considering that the same issue sold for over $160 a few years ago.
