Another fantastic album!

10. Student Demonstration Time - I hate this so much. Those awful sirens. Yuck!
9. Lookin' at Tomorrow (A Welfare Song) - Okay song, I've just never been that into it.
8. Don't Go Near the Water - Love Al's part!
7. Take a Load Off Your Feet - I love this song. So much fun.
6. Disney Girls (1957 - My favorite Bruce song. I think it's lovely.
5. Feel Flows - Great Carl song!
4. Long Promised Road - Same as above. I really like these lyrics. They make me feel good.
3. A Day in the Life of a Tree - What an eerie sounding song. Really nice job done by Jack.
2. Surf's Up - Amazing. Although Carl does a great job, I still think Brian is a notch above him on this one.
1. 'Til I Die - One of my favorite songs ever. This is a true masterpiece.

Can't pick this album apart. All of a piece for me. Surf's Up is definitely the best track, tho.

1. Surf's Up (Candidate for best Beach Boys song imo)
2. Feel Flows (Candidate for best Carl song imo, production is simply wondrous)
3. Til I Die
4. Tree
5. Don't Go Near The Water (amazing production)
6. Long Promised Road
7. Disney Girls
8. Looking At Tomorrow (Wish we had more moody Jardine, but it is a rip off)
9. Take A Load Off Your Feet (Wish we had more moody Jardine)
10. SDT (Guitars and track sound great, song is awful garbage)

This is probably the best produced Beach Boys album of the 'produced by The Beach Boys' era. It's got tonnes of interesting sounds and textures on it, it really rewards repeat listening.

Time to dig out the next LP in the selection!
I must say, this is one of the few albums I've played where side 2 is actually better than side 2. All too often all the best tracks are plastered at the start of side 1 and as the last track. Not here....

1) Surf's Up - no competition here - top of the pile, by miles.
2) 'Til I Die - Almost too short, but the tag is a tad too long - but still sublime.
3) Lookin' At Tomorrow (A Welfare Song) - Al's Mini masterpiece - unlike his beard on the lyric sheet.
4) A Day In The Life Of A Tree - Nothing appeals to me in this song. The performance is rubbish and it's stripped bare. And yet I absolutely love it. THIS is the sound of a tree dying right here.
5) Don't Go near The Water - I give the 45 a spin every now and then
6) Long Promised Road - Still trying to get the 45 cheaply, but that fuzz at the end really lifts the song.
7) Feel Flows - This song means nothing, but it's smoother than Mike's Forehead on the lyric sheet.
Cool Take A Load Off Your Feet - a far less serious touch to the album - should have been more central, or before 'the depression suite' - a lift before the fall! Makes me as happy as Dennis looks behind his drums on the lyric sheet.
9) Disney Girls (1957) - good, but too schmaltzy to be higher on the album - as cheesy as Bruce's 'tache on the lyric sheet.
10) Student Demonstration Time - Erm. Why was the on The Platinum Collection? Why is it here? And why is it rougher than Carl's beard on the lyric sheet?

Oh, and two of Brian's pictures on the lyric sheet are the same - but one's just a mirrored enlarged photo of his face from the other.

Did I mention the often rubbish photos on the lyric sheet?

Another great album!  I like every song on this but something's got to wind up at the bottom of the list.

1. Surf's Up - Hands down, tho it belongs on Smile
2. Til I Die - I prefer Mr. Desper's mix but this one's just fine too Smiley
3. Long Promised Road - Great song and Reiley's lyrics really work.  My only complaint is the verses are SO quiet.
4. Feel Flows - Another great one from Carl and Jack.  The instrumental break is a little "busy" but the rest of the song makes up for it.
5. Disney Girls - Well done, Bruce!  It's your masterpiece, and rightfully so.
6. Student Demonstration Time - I always wondered why so many Beach Boys fans hated this until I read through the rankings on the Sunflower thread.  The fact that so many people dislike "It's About Time" (in spite of the fact that it was written by "his holiness", Dennis Wilson!) just shows that many Beach Boys fans (like the ones who dislike "Bluebirds Over The Mountain" for being a "rock" song) just don't want the band rocking any harder than "Surfin' USA".
7. Looking At Tomorrow - A rip off, yes, but a nice contribution to the album.
8. Don't Go Near The Water - A nice song that served as the unofficial kick off to the band's attempt at redefining their name (later exemplified with stuff like "Steamboat", "The Trader", "Summer In Paradise", etc.) but the production is just a little too quirky for me.
9. A Day In The Life Of A Tree - I've got no problem with Reiley's contributions to the band and agree that his vocal here does in fact, work for the most part, but he should have had the managerial sense to decline the invitaion.  A vocal from Brian would have been the best but Van Dyke would have done great on it if they really wanted to use an "outsider".  However, Al would have been fine and taken the song to a whole different level.
10. Take A Load Off Your Feet - Someone recently hit the nail on the head by saying this was "Vega-Tables 1971" but it just doesn't fit the feel of the rest of the album's more somber tone and sticks out like a sore big toe.

Being the Smile nerd that I am, I've altered the band's discography to include Smile in place of Smiley Smile and replaced the Smile tracks on the albums that its well.  For this one, I excised the song but left the album title and kick off the whole thing with "4th Of July", which I'd place after "Feel Flows".

6.  Don't Go Near the Water

1. Surf's Up
2. 'Til I Die
3. Feel Flows
4. A Day in the Life of a Tree
5. Long Promised Road
6. Disney Girls (1957)
7. Don't Go Near the Water
8. Take a Load Off Your Feet
9. Lookin' at Tomorrow (A Welfare Song)

10. Student Demonstration Time

This album loses points only for the sheer discrepancy between its best tracks, which are masterpieces, and its weakest.  I have softened my stance on SDT somewhat, but it still pales in comparison to the top tracks.  Overall it's another fantastic listen in their underheard middle years.

1. Disney Girls (1957) - Bruce's best moment
2. Long Promised Road - My favorite Carl song (barely beats out Trader by a hair)
3. 'Til I Die
4. Surf's Up
5. Feel Flows
6. A Day In The Life Of A Tree
7. Don't Go Near The Water
8. Lookin' At Tomorrow
9. Take A Load Off Your Feet
10. Student Demonstration Time - I don't hate it as much as others do, but it sticks out like a sore thumb on the album.

1/ Surf's Up - Well, duh!
2/ Till I Die - Just amazing, Brian's last truly great song.
3/ Disney Girls - Easily the high watermark of Bruce's career.
4/ Don't go near the water - The best thing Mike and Al ever wrote? Love the coda.
5/ Long Promised Road - Took a while to grow on me but now I love it.
5/ Feel Flows - Love it but the flute solo goes on too long.
7/ Student Demonstration Time - Don't understand the hate for it.
8/ A day in the life of a Tree - I would rank this much higher if it wasn't for Jack's vocal.
9/ Looking at Tomorrow
10/ Take a load off your feet - An average song on a great album.

1. 'Til I Die - I prefer the Stephen Desper Mix, with the long intro. Still, one of Brian's all time greatest compositions.
2. Surf's Up - Not as good as the Smile Sessions or Brian's 1966 versions. Still, another one one Brian's finest songs. (I'm sensing a pattern here...)
3. Long Promised Road - I can't decide if I prefer this to Trader, but this is right up there. One of my favorite BB songs, period.
4. Disney Girls (1957) - Bruce really conveys a great sense of nostalgia. Beautiful, beautiful song.
5. A Day in the Life of a Tree - The harmonies at the end are among the best ever recorded.
6. Looking For Tomorrow (A Welfare Song) - I love this, the effects on Al's voice sound great.
7. Feel Flows
8. Don't Go Near the Water - I love that Mike and Al wrote a song that counteracts their "surfer dude" image. It's like their own "Surf's Up", if you think about it.
9. Student Demonstration Time - This has actually really grown on me. It rocks.
10. Take a Load off Your Feet
Logged

On our way through this "backstage" maze, Bruce joined up with the group and said hello, singing "It Never Rains in Southern California" and joking with some of the older ladies. I'm not sure if they knew he was a Beach Boy or simply an enthusiastic elderly gay gentleman.

1. Surf's Up - I prefer the version assembled for The Smile Sessions, yet at the end of the day, even without Brian's constant lead, this is one of, if not the greatest piece of modern music ever composed.
2. A Day in the Life of a Tree - Jack's gritty vocal only makes the coda at the end that much sweeter, y'all are tripping. It fits perfectly.
3. 'Til I Die - I'm not a huge fan of the structure, my favourite version of this song is a tweaking combination of the Stephen Desper mix and the album cut, I think it's on youtube somewhere and it's fantastic.
4. Disney Girls (1957) - A pop masterwork. Bruce's crowning glory.
5. Feel Flows - A strong contender for the best song song Carl ever wrote.
6. Don't Go Near the Water - Amazing production, phenomenal coda and okay lyrics.
7. Lookin' at Tomorrow - Nice and refreshing change of pace.
8. Take a Load Off Your Feet - I like this song a lot, but I prefer listening to it outside of the context of the Surf's Up album.
9. Long Promised Road - I used to cringe a little when listening to that horribly overwrought chorus, I still don't like it, but it's become a little more digestable with time.
10. Student Demonstration Time - Eh. I appreciate the attempt to rock but Mike's vocals and the sirens are appalling. Where's the Mike Love who delivered the scorching lead on All I Want to Do just two years earlier?!
