2. "I Can Hear Music" - I love the way this song starts. It starts off big, almost like someone cut it to the middle section of a longer harmony line. Then, that unique take on a Spector song comes in - just a bunch of acoustic guitars. Carl, as always, is absolutely stunning at singing and those low harmonies behind it all are lovely. Then, it collapses into that wonderful a Capella section only to launch right back into how the song started. Great idea.
Very nice write-up, Mr. Waves, but I couldn't resist asking - do you really like every single vocal by Carl? Wild Honey? Pom Pom Play Girl? All Dressed up for School? Here Comes the Night? Talk to Me? Mess of Help? (naming the songs considered the worst Carl vocs around here) Not that there's anything wrong, am just genuinely surprised.

Damn straight!
I love me some Carl.

Wild Honey? That surprises me, I would never have considered that be a bad vocal. There might be a shrill syllable or two, but its definitely not bad.
It surprises me as well that a lot of posters dislike his WH vocal. Someone even said that Carl sounds like a brat. To me, it's one of the greatest examples of his singing, very bright & soulful.

I personally prefer the more soulful leads than the rock leads he does  Smiley  I would take "Soulful Old Man Sunshine" over "Mess of Help to Stand Alone" it sounds like its more natural and easier for him to sing and he did an awesome job  Grin

I would ask you to listen to ANYTHING (Studio or Live) from 1972 onward and you will see that Carl's vocal on Mess Of Help is closer to natural than what he did prior. As I have said before, Carl had a versatile singing voice and could sing almost anything, but his natural singing voice seems closer to the sounds of Mess Of Help more so than Soulful Old Man Sunshine.

The Brianista Prayer

Oh Brian
Thou Art In Hawthorne,
Harmonied Be Thy name
Your Kingdom Come,
Your Steak Well Done,
On Stage As It Is In Studio,
Give Us This Day, Our Shortenin' Bread
And Forgive Us Our Bootlegs,
As We Also Have Forgiven Our Wife And Managers,
And Lead Us Not Into Kokomo,
But Deliver Us From Mike Love.
Amen.  ---hypehat

I like how he sings it on that one t.v. appearance they did with Captain Keyboards  Smiley  I found it odd that denny came at the very end of it and then a similar thing happened with mike for the music video version

Low point of late 1960's albums - but still consistent

1. I Can Hear Music - very casual wall of sound.
2. Cabin Essennce - very thick wall of sound
3. Be with Me - strings' wall of sound
4. Do It Again
5. Time To Get Alone
6. Never Learn Not to Love

7. I Went to Sleep
8. Our Prayer
9. All I Want to Do
10. Cotton Fields
11. Bluebirds over the Mountain - still good.

12. The Nearest Faraway Place
