I don't really ever listen to this one
10. Mama Says

To skip one minute of a 24-minute album must surely constitute the definition of "short of time".

Like I said, I understand the whole "music for Brian to cool out to" thing but these three "albums of demos" back to back are hard for me to take.   Too lo-fi/lo tech, coming on the heels of their (complete and unfinished) masterpieces.  Still, this one ranks oceans above its predecessor to me, and I want to rate all the albums so...

1. Darlin' - The only "finished" track on the album and not surprisingly, the album's only hit (and their first since "Heroes And Villains")!
2. Wild Honey - SO close!  Good track and Carl does his best to put it over the top but the production falls short.
3. Country Air - "Air"?  Andother great "almost song"
4. I Was Made to Love Her - The one benefits from being an actual finished song so like the tile cut, it's only the production thats unfinished.
5. Let the Wind Blow - This one shines on In Concert, where it benefits from the fuller production.  Sorry for sounding like a broken record.
6. How She Boogalooed It - Fun! Something this laid back album could have used more of.  It could have been Party! 2.0
7. I'd Love Just Once to See You - Brian's vocal and melody almost makes up for his borderline inane lyrics but his punchline puts it over the top. Smiley
8. Here Comes the Night - Sounds like a demo for the '79 version that Bruce finally finished...and proceeded to run into the ground
9. Aren't You Glad - Slightly better production and a nice job from Carl but it still feels too unfinished
10. A Thing Or Two - Another "demo"

11. Mama Says - Fragment.  Finish it or put it back on Smile and give us another song instead.

The inclusion of "The Letter" would have helped.  I also put this record way over both Smiley Smile and Friends.  I'd have no problem with it having a place in their discography if it were joined by Lei'd In Hawaii instead of the two that book ended it.  A neat sound and a different direction is nice but the name of Brain's game is making hit records and one album was enough of a detour.  Bring on 20/20!  Oh, wait...

I don't hate Mama Says; I just don't like it as much as some of the other tracks.  I love the whole album.

Very nice writeup, RR. I think you meant "homey atmosphere," though, didn't you?? I love that tie-in between WH and the third VU album--very much on-point there, I think.

It took a few years--'bout 20, in fact--but WH would now safely rank in the top 5 of all BB LP's in my estimate.

Off the cuff, as of right now, my ranks:

1. Wild Honey
2. Country Air
3. Let the Wind Blow (particularly the stellar Hawthorne remix)
4. Aren't You Glad
5. A Thing or Two
6. Darlin'
7. I'd Love Just Once to See You
8. How She Boogalooed It
9. I Was Made to Love Her
10. Mama Says
11. Here Comes the Night

1. Aren't You Glad - I love the mood of this song. Probably would've fitted even better on Friends.
2. Country Air - Another song that would've been great for Friends.
3. Darlin'
4. Let The Wind Blow
5. I'd Love Just Once To See You
6. A Thing Or Two
7. Here Comes the Night
8. Wild Honey
9. I Was Made To Love Her - Good song, but what's the point of doing a cover song if it's just an inferior copy of the original?
10. How She Boogalooed It - Nice groove, but not a good song.
11. Mama Says - Hardly an actual song and slightly annoying. Filler.

I think it's a great vocal piece, but it doesn't really work in the context of the album.

On our way through this "backstage" maze, Bruce joined up with the group and said hello, singing "It Never Rains in Southern California" and joking with some of the older ladies. I'm not sure if they knew he was a Beach Boy or simply an enthusiastic elderly gay gentleman.

The original I Was Made To Love Her is Motown has a smoking rhythm section. I'm not sure how the Beach Boys stood a prayer covering that. A bad decision IMHO.

Jeez. Can't believe I haven't ranked this one yet....well here goes:

1 "Aren't You Glad": Lovely song. Brian, Carl, and Mike all sound great. Simple but great lyrics. All around wonderful song. Wouldn't mind if they did this one live if they got back together again.
2 "Darlin'": Deserved hit single. Punchy track, great Carl vocal.
3 "Wild Honey": Brian doing doing garage r&b. Great track. Love the theremin and also Bruce organ solo.
4 "A Thing Or Two": Great little rockin' song. Which they woulda done more like this. This is a precursor to "Do It Again" right?
5 "I'd Love Just Once To See You": Mellow, casual Brian vocal. The little harmony break-down sounds like it could be in like a Coke commercial.
6 "Here Comes The Night": Solid tune, strong Brian vocal, but not one of my favorites. Still good though.
7 "I Was Made To Love Her": Nice little cover, nothing crazy. But I enjoy it.
8 "Let The Wind Blow": Overrated in my opinion. Never cared much for the lyrics. Sometimes I'm the mood for it, but rarely.
9 "Country Air": Sometimes I really dig the vibe of this one, but a lot of the time, I can't get into it. I do like
10 "Mama Says": Doesn't really hit me. Doesn't seem like anything more than an exercise.
11 "How She Boogalooed It": Nice try guys, not it ain't happening.

I, too, used to cringe at "How She Boogalooed It", until it dawned on me:
Lindsey Buckingham owes a huge debt to that song. Think of some of his Tusk songs--"The Ledge", "That's Enough For Me" and his solo stuff like "That's How We Do It in L.A.".  They wouldn't exist without this song. That's my theory, anyway.
Not that Buckingham's seal of approval means a song is good (that'd be a strange world) but it gives some weight and context to the song's legacy.

On the other hand, I think "Country Air" is a great idea that doesn't go anywhere.

So, having said that, my top three from Wild Honey:

1) I'd Love Just Once to See You
2) Aren't You Glad (90's indie pop in one song. Papas Fritas etc)
3) Let the Wind Blow

Oh, I'm gonna love this:

1. Let The Wind Blow - One of my all-time top 10 favorite Beach Boys songs. Simply devine.
2. Darlin' - Oh man, one of my favorite Carl vocals ever. Nobody should ever just back him in a sweet ballad singing corner. He rocks it, you best believe. Essential and then some.
3. Aren't You Glad - Spec-frigging-tacular! Wonderful Brian n' Mike interplay.
4. Wild Honey - Simply badass. What a relief after my confusing thoughts over Smiley.
5. Country Air - Sweetness. One of the best reasons why this album needs to stay in mono.
6. I Was Made To Love Her - Great cover. I do slightly prefer Stevie's original, but hey, Carl's sandpaper and honey is just right.
7. I'd Love Just Once To See You - Brian, you clever bastard. Please donate your brain to science after you pass (and may that be a looooong time from now)!
8. Here Comes The Night - Death to the disco one! This is awesome!
9. A Thing Or Two - Niiiiice one.
10. How She Boogooloed It - Didn't know what to make of it at first, but now I love it! RAWK it Al!
11. Mama Says - I LOVE LOVE this song, it's wonderful, but SOMETHING has to be last and I like everything else at least a little bit better. That's what's so hard about ranking tracks on my favorite Beach Boys albums. I really think this little gem is great, seriously.

See all those exclamation points? Man. What a fine, fine FIIIIINE album this is and one of my favorites of the band's. If you don't like Wild Honey, well, go listen to Summer in Paradise. You're clueless.

1. Darlin' - 273 (Cool
2. Let the Wind Blow - 248 (Cool
3. Wild Honey - 243 (6)
4. Aren't You Glad - 232 (6)
5. Country Air - 230 (1)
6. I'd Love Just Once to See You - 183 (2)
7. Here Comes the Night - 182
8. A Thing or Two - 139
9. I Was Made to Love Her - 135
10. How She Boogalooed It - 101
11. Mama Says - 79

My thoughts?  Though I was pulling for Let the Wind Blow to take it, Darlin' is the other worthy winner.  It seems a trend on these lists that a lot of the pretty album cuts get high place votes but aren't as consistently well-loved as the uptempo singles.

Awesome
1. Darlin- The perfect mix with a great vocal. It's the Beach Boys freakin' Darlin!
2. Aren't You Glad- If this song had some better production it would be Number 1. It's still really cool though!
3. Wild Honey- I like soul music every once in a while and this has a hell of lot of soul! Carl's awesome on this.
4. Here Comes the Night- I listen to this song quite often. That bass is awesome.
5. I Was Made To Love Her- DAT BASS.
6. Let The Wind Blow- Yes I like the upbeat stuff more: Deal with it. I love the bridge/chorus of this.
7. Country Air- They say that sometimes more is less and less is more. Cool chill out track.

Good
8. How She Boogalooed It- I reckon it's pretty cool.
9. A Thing Or Too- Sounds like a cool jam at Brian's House. Nice but not amazing.
10. I'd Love Just Once To See You- Sounds a bit unfinished. It's good but not my favorite. Love the ending.

Okay
11. Mama Says- Completely out of place. This would work better on Smiley Smile.

One of my all-time favorite albums.  Let's see:

1.  Wild Honey
2.  Darlin'
3.  Here Comes the Night
4.  Aren't You Glad
5.  I Was Made to Love Her
6.  Country Air
7.  Let The Wind Blow
8.  I'd Love Just Once to See You
9.  Mama Says
10.  A Thing or Two
11.  How She Boogalooed It

Really, the only two tracks I'm not totally keen on are "A Thing or Two" and "How She Boogalooed it," but the good points are so dang good that it makes up for those two.  The title track, "Darlin'," "Here Comes the Night," and "Aren't You Glad" are four of my favorite BBs tracks, ever, and the others are high up there too.

"Wild Honey," the song, is probably in my top five BBs songs, period.  I just love the vibe of that song, Carl's scorching delivery, that deliciously filthy combo organ - love it!  And on days when I feel a little differently, "Darlin'" takes its spot.

11.  How She Boogalooed It
one would think everyone likes cool rocking tunes. Why is this track thumbs down for you, Mr. Ville?

In general, I LOVE cool, rocking tunes!  It's just, for whatever reason, this song doesn't really connect with me.  I don't know if I could pin down exactly why that is - it's not a bad song at all, it's just...I dunno.  Maybe the vocal delivery?  I'm not sure.  Something about it is just "off" to me and I don't connect with it.
