Paul's definitely written better albums than any solo Beatle during 70s. George's ATMP & "Concert For Bangladesh" excepted but not really.

Living The Blues

Hey, I have that album too! Not crazy about side 4 but the rest is pretty cool.

From side 1, this is "Sandy's Blues": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBjG3w0UYrs

And right now I'm listening to this, an LP I used to own many moons ago:

LAGWAFIS is an album about loss. Spiritualized's mastermind Jason Pierce's long-time girlfriend left him to get married in secret to a singer in a then-massive band. The day I bought the album, someone drove their car vigorously into the back wheel of my parked bike, so I can sympathize with Mr Pierce. Grin

Everyone should have heard this album at least once in their lives.

Some music I've been enjoying lately:

FKA twigs - LP1

FKA twigs has one of the best sounds right now. I love Video Girl and Lights On.

FKA twigs - M3LL155X

Just finished listening to this now. Again, great sound and I particularly enjoy the closing Mothercreep.

The Weeknd - My Dear Melancholy,

His best work since 2013's Kiss Land, and in my opinion as urgent and compelling a work of Noir R&B as has ever been recorded. Personal, staggering production and performance, with an emotional wallop that floors me. Try Me might just be the best song he's ever recorded. What a chorus! Check out that sneaky synth that comes in on the final chorus.

Tinashe - Joyride

Tinashe is one of the most impressive new R&B stars, and this album follows up very nicely on her last two LPs. Top tier production throughout. Check out Me So Bad.

Kelela - Take Me Apart

One of my favourite albums of last year. Kelela may just be the best new R&B talent since The Weeknd. Has something of Janet in her vocals. Sublime production, writing and performance. Onandon is a favourite.

Drake - Nice For What (single)

A devastating production, that nearly cuts the flesh, so hard and driving is it. Drake's trademark singing rapping style is as potent as ever. Great hook/sample. Very excited for the new album coming in June.

George Michael - Older

My favourite George Michael album by far. A real masterpiece of atmosphere and introspection. The title track is amazing, as are Fast Love and Star People.

Calvin Harris - Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1

A similar project to Mark Ronson's last one, lining up an A list collaborators and working in a production environment that is at the front of the game. Feels featuring Pharrell is the top track here, but I also love Nuh Ready Nuh Ready featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR, who sings in a beautiful Jamaican patois. This was released as a single and is unfortunately not on the album.

Interesting. I like "Blame", his collaboration with John Newman.

Right now I'm listening to the opening track from Spacemen 3's 1987 album The Perfect Prescription:

There are albums that come along every now and then that make you wonder, "where has this been all my life?". This album is certainly one of those:

Most underrated artist ever?

Now that's an album I've heard of but, like you, never heard. I get the impression she's a musician's musician, who's regardly highly for her songs but not for her own renditions of them. Perhaps I should check her out as well.

I had that recently with the 1970 album Parallelograms by Linda Perhacs. Track #1 and the title track are awesome and the rest is pretty good too. An engaging listening experience. With grateful thanks to theSuperMetroid across the road for the heads up:

I was listening through Eli and the Thirteen Confession for the second time all the way through when I posted about it above so I have heard it before. I've listened to a handful of Nyro's other albums but that one, her second, is her best. Stunning singing, lyrics and music. She mixes soul, Brill Building pop, jazz and folk to brilliant effect. Uniquely beautiful.

Yes, Laura Nyro is great singer. There's many similar (not really) voices like hers but she's got thick mature sound. The other female singers with high voice sing as young women, there's youthfulness & Laura sings like she's older than many of them. Very beautiful voice.

I mentioned Laura before in music threads but nobody seemed interested back then. Her debut The First Songs/ alt. title More Than New Discovery isn't shabby either. It shows how she began, she sings few songs by 5th Dimension (written ofc by her). Who like to compare can check this album.

Gregorian chant makes a great backdrop for doing a spot of work. It has a soothing effect and is present without intruding on one's thoughts.

With thanks to Cool Cool Water for sharing this video:

Now listening to:

Chance The Rapper is probably my favourite rapper after Drake. He has, like Drake, a wonderful ear for melody, and his singing rapping style is super compelling and powerful. These are his first two mixtapes, which I for some reason never got around to getting a hold of. They are available for free, legal download here if you're interested in hearing some of the best rap being produced today.

These are really, really good. I humbly suggest that Chance deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Drake, Kendrick and J. Cole.

I got into Chromatics through Twin Peaks: The Return, where they play the beautiful Shadow over the closing credits of the first double episode. I love their sound, which fits incredibly well on the Drive soundtrack. As always, Spotify provides an unbeatable access to new and unheard old music.
