The underrated Sweet 75 album from 1997.

Today's major musical discovery was this two-CD aural feast by Tony Conrad and Faust:

The opposite of a sophomore slump: this is their best album.

Captain Beefheart - The Spotlight Kid

A fine album. I saw Beefheart sing most of the songs from it in London in 1972.
To say nothing of the Magic Band (Harkleroad, Boston, Ingber, Estrada, French, Tripp).
Mind-boggling!

As for my listening fare (thanks to the captain):

The Shirelles 12 Greatest Hits on an old cassette tape which I bought in the bargain bin back in the mid or late eighties. I've been on a cassette tape kick lately...

That's awesome!  I love The Spotlight Kid.  At first, I found it sluggish and just a tad watered down -- but still really good.  But, as time went on (as with all Beefheart albums) I started to love it's mushy, swampy, lethargic, dirty grittiness.

Captain Beefheart - Grow Fins, Disc 3

Ha! The "Trout Mask Sessions". The Magic Band went through the mill to get there, thanks to a certain person, but they sure could nail those complex tracks note for note every time. I believe Zappa was dumbfounded by the fact that they breezed through them in one or two takes in the studio.

I'm not a fan of live recordings generally but there's a truly blistering live version of the box set's title track on disc five. And plenty more goodies on board!

Have you read Bill Harkelroad's (Zoot Horn Rollo) book? He pokes plenty of holes in the Beefheart mystique, but regardless, the music stands as brilliant (whoever was responsible for it).

Seeing these posts I was just going to pull out my copy of the Grow Fins box, and--damnit!--can't find it anywhere. Guess I'll go to proper albums instead.

If I swing round slightly, I can see it there on the shelf. :=) Most revealing! I believe John French has also written a book about his Beefheart years...

But as you say, the music is brilliant, however it was made.

Yes! Some utterly brilliant songs on there. As for me...

Dokken Tooth And Nail. On an old cassette tape.

Nothing like rockin with Dokken.

So disappointed that I attended the M3 Festival in 2012, featuring Lynch Mob and Dokken.  I was really hoping George Lynch would join Dokken on stage for at least one song.  Missed opportunity.  George and Don make Mike and Brian look like best friends.
