I loved Electric Warrior the first few times I heard it. Now I kinda hate it. Mambo Sun and BAG are great, but I just can't listen to anything else on there.

One of my 10 favorite albums of this century.

It's a great one for sure. I'm not the world's biggest Of Montreal fan, but some of the melodies are fantastic. Do you rank it higher than 'Hissing Fauna...' ?

That's a difficult question for me. The musical highlights of Hissing Fauna... are as high as anything the band has ever done, with "Heimdalsgate" to me the undeniable gem. Obviously it is also their real commercial breakthrough (if you can call going from small cult following to substantial indie following a breakthrough ... it got them into larger venues anyway), and its personal-confessional lyrics seem to have brought something a lot of people value. But personally I don't value confessional lyrics any more than storytelling: autobiographical art is no better than third-person art. And while I enjoyed the foray into funk and electronics--begun with a little bit of controversy on Satanic Panic, actually, with people flipping out over the drum machines on "Disconnect the Dots" when it was released in advance of the album!--I'm a popster at heart.

Further, there is also one's own experience with the music. It was special seeing the first Satanic Panic shows at First Ave ... 7th Street Entry, not mainroom. There were maybe 50 people there, which was a HUGE improvement over their Adhils Arboretum or interim tours, so I was pretty excited. I remember asking Kevin before the show (easy to do in those days) whether they'd be doing "Lysergic Bliss" and being astonished he said yeah, they'd do it all, including the vocal breakdown. (And they did, though the second time around on that tour they did it mostly instrumentally.) BP was newly back in the band. It was just great.

So yes, I'd say I rate it higher than Hissing Fauna, but they're probably both in my top 15 of the century, so it's no critique on the latter. (And no, my top 15 albums of the century isn't all of Montreal...)

Agreed - I can't go very long before needing to hear, say, "Climb The Ladder" again.  Some great stuff on there.

Reminded through the "Greatest live albums"-thread I'm listening to this double set right now:

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

^ I like the sound and the direction the band adopted with this album. Too bad they forgot to write more memorable tunes to go with it.

Awesome. "This Is the Story" (studio set) has a nice layered sound.

I'm listening to THE BEST OF SLEEPY JOHN ESTES on Yahoo. A distinctive singer with an insightful perspective. Sleepy John was from West Tennessee; wonder if he ever crossed paths with Elvis?
