Old Tubey's algorithm can come up trumps at times and it certainly hit the jackpot on this occasion. Demolition Group hails from former Yugoslavia. Their album Mizerika dates from 1988:

Sure Smiley  If I had to choose three songs as my favorites from Flaming Pie they would be:

1. The Song We Were Singing - It reminds me of hanging out with good friends and just doing nothing

2. The World Tonight - I love the edgier lead guitar in this one

3. Calico Skies - Exactly what a sweet little love song should be
What do you think about "Little Willow"?

You know, I hadn't listened to Little Willow in a while, so I just watched the video for it on YouTube, and I have to say, I teared up while watching it. At first I thought it was referring to Linda McCartney, but upon further reading discovered it was written about Maureen Starkey, Ringo's ex-wife.

Was feeling a bit under the weather so decided to take it easy and listen to some old timey music.
I'm reading a book about the song "House of the Rising Sun," as the author explores how the song developed over ( possibly) centuries. I'll post about the book eventually in the What are you Reading thread .

I listened to four distinct versions, all great in their own ways. (These are available online in the US, hopefully abroad as well.)

The Animals' version, of course. Some people say it's not good but I think it was a really good version, and it introduced a lot of people to the song.

Woody Guthrie. His has the same lyrics but a different melody, in a major key. His is the version our folk group used in performances of this song.

Bob Dylan . Another great version with additional verses. His is based on how folksinger Dave Van Ronk performed it.

Finally, a version I hadn't heard before, by one of my all-time favorite singers, Doc  Watson. It's a more upbeat (musically) version, great guitar picking. before the first instrumental break he tells the guitar soloist to "shuffle them cards" lol. It too has some different lyrics from the others. The last line sends shivers - "then they'll tie me to an old ball and chain / until my earthly race is run."

this probably bores a lot of people but I can't get enough of this stuff...

The Animals did it the best. Dylan's is epic fail. He's terrible singer.

I agree with everything you've said here!

I had a college roommate who adored Dylan, but much as I tried, I could not get over his vocals...

Their version took pop music generally to a whole new level. I see the original US release was seriously truncated--scandalous! Shocked

That said... I never, ever want to hear it again--it got played to death in 1964, believe me. LOL

Finally smb. hates Dylan. Cool! Smiley I got hilarious backlash due to it. Apparently, saying Dylan is terrible singer & anything negative to the effect is akin to "Shame on you!". There's crazy BD worshippers. Respecting different views is titanic task to these weirdos. Btw, the other poster bubbly waves few yrs back tried to get me into Dylan via pm's & brought YT links with his best songs & there's song in which he sings in soft manner "Lay Lady" or what it's called & you know what? I found that pseudo-crooner style worse than usual screechy off-key. Besides, that poster tried to show Dylan's good traits by linking incident when burglar tried to break into his house; in the pic Dylan attacks the guy to defend his fam/ house. But anybody would defend his/ her fam. & he being guy, it's, y'know, expected. It isn't impressive in grand scheme. Tongue

I hear you, RR, and I also do not understand the shaming thing. So I don't like Bob Dylan...big deal. Now, I don't deny his significance with regard to American culture in the 1960s. I just don't like his vocals--it's really that simple. I don't freak out when people tell me they don't like the Beach Boys--their loss, I think, but I don't stand there and denigrate them.

Wanna know a secret? I don't like the Rolling Stones, either.  Razz Wink

We denying artist A, B or C's significance means zero anyway. They'll keep being significant. But, there's solution  Smiley - simply to not give flying fig about the artist's significance if you can't stand their music, be it songs, singing voice etc.

Is it due to Mick Jagger's vocs, beachcat? Many dislike RS since MJ is main singer.

Btw, is username blend - being BBs & cat fan?

The reason I don't like the Rolling Stones is primarily Mick Jagger's vocals, yes. Generally when the RS come on my Sirius XM app, I change the channel.

And yes, my username comes from being both a BBs and cat fan. Kitties are the best! While I do know that both Brian and Carl had dogs at some point, I wonder if any of the Beach Boys liked cats too or had them as pets?

I recently discovered this fantastic band called Le Superhomard. Their new album Meadow Lane Park ( https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nJ9AB27gKZ6nMDqcGUHah_TSALvS2d18w ) is manna from heaven for fans of the departed Stereolab, Komeda, The Bird and the Bee, and conspicuously absent High Llamas. If you are a Sunshine Pop or Chamber Pop fan I think you would also like their music, as it is sweet and highly melodic with plenty of hooks. If you're in the mood for a musical sugar rush, it does not get any better, I promise.

I believe Mike has a cat.
According to the 2016 RS article about Mike, the cat's name is Pixie, described as a "little cat."

DebbieKL had posted sometime back that Brian liked cats.

Gandalf is an album that was very highly placed in theSuperMetroid's list of "Keepers" in her Obscure Albums topic, first at PSF and then at EH. I listened to it again last night. It's psychedelic without being obtrusively so, the instrumentation is very bright and, most unusually, the album includes a lot of cover versions at a time when everyone was writing all their own material. Before now, "Scarlet Ribbons" was best known to me from the '50s version by Harry Belafonte. I dedicate this 1969 version to SM, who I know from her pictures has worn scarlet ribbons herself.

Various parts of the KISS catalogue - mostly the original lineup and its reunion - since I went to see their second farewell tour.  As a casual fan, I would've preferred to see Ace and/or Peter there, since the tickets were extremely expensive, but it was still a good show.

Well, RR, I have 5 cats, all domestic shorthairs from various animal shelters. One is a gray tortie, two brown tabbies, and two orange tabbies.

How about you? I'm guessing the cat in your avatar is your kitty?

Retro cat pic collecting seems like a fun hobby! My cats all sit the catloaf way, very cute indeed. I love how they tuck all their paws under themselves for catloaf. Another cute pose is when they are totally relaxed they sometimes lie on their backs with their bellies up and all four paws stretched out. They don't have a care in the world!

I remember this gorgeous French song from way back but it was only recently that I discovered the title. I always thought it was "Le Château" as this keeps returning in the lyrics...

Last night I found myself listening to Hawkwind's "Master Of The Universe".

I used to live in London when they hit with "Silver Machine". Lemmy, who had joined them by then and sang on "SM", used to drop into various pubs in Portobello Road to give it a jukebox plug. Grin

More Hawkwind, this time their 1972 hit album Doremi Fasol Latido. This would have made a great addition to theSuperMetroid's Obscure Album Discoveries & Recommendations topic across the road. (I can't see it listed there.) I just love those lo-fi spacey effects! Roll Eyes
