One of my favorite albums.

1. There's No Other (Like My Baby) - THIS is how you do a stripped-back Spector cover. The soul and love in Brian's voice always floors me.
2. Devoted To You - Mike and Brian in close harmony, as they should be.
3. Mountain Of Love - It is that middle eight. It really tugs the heart, that melody.
4. Papa Oom Mow Mow - ANY Beach Boys version of this song rules, and this is no exception. The group don't need electric guitars to rock.
5. Hully Gully/Alley Oop TIE - This is part of what makes this album so important in terms of understanding where The Beach Boys come from. If you boil all these cover choices down, you'll come pretty close to the group's overall sound.
6. I Should Have Known Better/Tell Me Why/You've Got To Hide Your Love Away TIE - How great was it that The Beach Boys had so little self-consciousness, to pay tribute to their main artistic rivals with three cover choices? In all of them, you can hear the love in the voices. I wish The Beatles would have returned the favor.
7. Barbara Ann - I'm tired of it too, but it is a great finale to the album, and it opens out the band's scene to include Dead. Shouldn't have been a single, tho.
8. I Get Around/Little Deuce Coupe - I love the band's goon-humor, and this is a great example.
9. The Times They Are A-Changin' - The lowest point of the album, but it is great that they did a Dylan tune.

I wish they had kept in Satisfaction, and finished Smokey Joe's Cafe.

Not really much to say about this album, except it's great for buying Brian more time to work on Pet Sounds. The Tracks really are interchangable for me, but they're generally pretty good. I actually love the car medley, it's funny to hear the group do it tounge-in-cheek like they did here.

On our way through this "backstage" maze, Bruce joined up with the group and said hello, singing "It Never Rains in Southern California" and joking with some of the older ladies. I'm not sure if they knew he was a Beach Boy or simply an enthusiastic elderly gay gentleman.

Oops.  I don't know how I missed this one.  I actually like this album a lot.  I think Brian made some fantastic lemonade out of the scheduling lemons he was dealt.

1. Devoted to You - magical
2. There's No Other (Like My Baby) - phenomenal.  Too bad Brian didn't give this one a "proper" go.
3. Mountain of Love - I love it!
9. Barbara Ann - It occupies its place in their legacy for good reason.  It's no masterpiece but I also don't understand all the hate.
8. Tell Me Why - Sounds way better with an extra chorus but it's a fine, fun cover.
7. Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow - Brian TEARIN' it up!
6. Alley Oop - I LOVE the part where is modulates during the chorus!
5. Hully Gully - A fine performance
4. I Should Have Known Better - Weak but inoffensive.
3. The Times They Are a-Changin - Weak but saved by Al's performance.
2. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away - Way overrated in these parts IMO.  Dennis had yet to reach his full potential and it shows.
12. Medley: "I Get Around / Little Deuce Coupe - The only actual "bad" track.  I would have gladly taken "Ruby, Baby", "Satisfaction", or any number of the other outtakes over this.

1. Devoted To You - Wonderful. Brian and Mike doin' an Everly Brothers song....why didn't the band cover these guys more often. Love it.
2. There's No Other (Like My Baby) - One of the best covers here. More Phil Spector love, and it's done so well.
3. Barbara Ann - Well, it's a perennial and I SHOULD be really sick of it, but I'm not there yet. Still great. "Scratch it, Carl!"
4. Tell Me Why - One of the most underrated Beatles songs and perfect for the Beach Boys to harmonize. Great.
5. I Should Have Known Better - 'Nother cool Beatles cover. Also great.
6. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away - Ditto. Really great again. Go Denny!
7. Medley: I Get Around/Little Deuce Coupe - I'm officially one of the only people alive that LIKE this track. It's funny, what can I tell you?
8. Mountain of Love - Very nice cover.
9. Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow - Better than any other version I've heard the BBs do; Brian just rocks it.
10. Hully Gully - Very good.
11. Alley Oop - Also very good.
12. The Times They Are a-Changin' - Eh. Not bad, but this is just about the only case where the party overdubs kinda mess up the song. And I don't think it's a very good cover either.

I really like the Party! album, it's a little underrated and I really should listen to it more. It may be Brian's stopgap LP to shut Capitol up while workin' on his perfect masterpiece, but it ended up being pretty enjoyable. Lighten up and you just might dig it.

I've focused on this album so sparingly that sometimes I feel like it doesn't exist.  It's almost like there was this part of their history I completely missed out and am re-discovering again.  It's actually a very worthwhile if non-essential listen.

1. Devoted to You - 144 (4)
2. There's No Other (Like My Baby) - 134 (4)
3. Barbara Ann - 126 (3)
4. Mountain of Love - 121
5. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away - 103 (2)
6. Tell Me Why - 99
6. Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow - 99
8. I Should Have Known Better - 89
9. Hully Gully - 80.5
10. The Times They Are a-Changin' - 66 (1)
11. Alley Oop - 64.5
12. Medley: "I Get Around/Little Deuce Coupe" - 44 (1)

My thoughts?  A very appropriate top four.  If it weren't for being omitted from a couple lists, Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow would likely be a couple places higher, though I'm not quite sure why it was so well-received.

Alright, my husband just came home from his work's holiday party and his boss gave him Courvoisier, so that's open now and I'm going to do a few more of these for shits and giggles  Grin

1. Devoted To You (fan of the Everlys since I was just a wee thing, this is almost perfect)
2. There's No Other Like My Baby
3. Mountain Of Love
4. Alley Oop
5. Hully Gully
6. Medley: Get Around/Deuce Coupe (so amusing)
7. Barbara Ann
8. Papa Oom Mow Mow
9. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
10. I Should Have Known Better
11. Tell Me Why (I don't know why the Beatles covers all get moved to the bottom, I guess the originals are just all so much better. Still love these though!)
12. The Times They Are A-Changin' (I love Al. I really do. His performance on this is great, and in general his voice is so consistent throughout the years. I just do not dig this song, like at all.)

One of the weakest, but still a lot of fun.

1. Devoted To You - beautiful blend of harmony
2. Mountain of Love - pleasant vocal by Brian
3. Barbara Ann
4. The Times They Are a-Changin' - this is part of the reason why I'm into Dylan now. Al sings great and the song attracts me.

5. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away - Dennis is always a heart-warming singer.
6. There's No Other
7. Hully Gully

8. Alley Oop
9. Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow
10. Tell Me Why
11. I Should Have Known Better

12. I Get Around/Little Deuce Coupe - This is unacceptable IMO

Yep. 3D

Do you think Dennis sings "Hide" better than John? I think he does, really.
Up to this era I prefer John's vocal to Dennis', and this is no exception for me. Dennis really sings well here - but he couldn't top John's heartfelt vocal on the original IMO.
