I tried over at the Jan & Dean board, but didn't get any help with this.

Does anyone know if their albums, specifically Folk'n'Roll were mixed differently or if the mono is basically a stereo fold down? Its one of my favorites, but I find it unlistenable on headphones due to the "visual stereo." I was going to use music editing software to do a fold down, but only if it represents how the original album in mono would've sounded.

Thanks so much for any help!

I'd have to check but I'm about 99.99999999 percent sure that a fold down of the wide stereo mix WILL NOT equal the mono. Fold downs became more prevalent in the latter end of the 60s, when mono albums were no longer issued but there was a need for mono singles.

I know most Jan & dean albums have entirely different mono/stereo mixes, sometimes with different edits, instruments, and parts. My turntable is crapped out right now, so I can't do an A/B test. I would always tend toward mono for most things until at least 1967, especially with Jan since he had such crisp and tight mono mixes.

Jan recorded, produced and mixed in mono. The stereo things are like the stereo version of "Shut down vol.2" for example. Not the real deal. Still hoping for some real official stereo-remixes.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

I meant really good remixes. Not those stupid ones that you mostly find (if they use Jan&Dean recordings at all and not some re-recordings by one of Dean' projects)

The remixes that I am referring to were done by Larry Walsh and Ron Furmanek in 1990. These remixes are more centered. The original 3-track stereo mixes had very little center.

Ok, I don't know if I heard the Walsh-mixes.

Oh wait... I know who was doing fold downs  in 1960. Bill Porter's Elvis mono mixes  were folded down.
