I'm in Detroit and should care...but don't.  There's a problem when over half the teams make the playoffs.  Still, the NBA may be worse with its two-month long system.

Maybe, but the playoffs are amazing. I wouldn't change a thing.

Would you care if the Blue Jackets were actually in the playoffs?

Probably.  But it's hard to get excited until you get a team with a decent record.  I mean, this is NHL -- it's not supposed to be that hard to get a playoff spot!

It's interesting that you have that perception. I mean, statistically, 16/30 teams make it, but at the same time, it's obviously not a guarantee (and the races at the end are very exciting!). Does that prevent you from enjoying the sport in general? Rerun said the same thing. I know the BJs aren't very good, so that would certainly make it harder to care, but at the same time, being a fan of the sport, you should still want to watch the playoffs. My perception, as a Canadian fan, is that Americans are mostly apathetic towards hockey in general, and I was wondering if this "too many teams make the playoffs" was a big factor. The NHL is certainly the least popular of the major sports in the US and I hate that, because I want to see the sport succeed.

As for the playoffs, I love the 16 team format. The best teams don't get byes, so they can be upset by a streaking underdog. All rounds are seven games and have the same weight, unlike the best of five first rounds that I see in other sports. The first round is actually the best round, with so much action every night!

If it were football, I would and do care regardless.  I planned my return from vacation at Christmas around getting home in time to watch the National Championship game.  Hockey? It's OK.  Not as cool to me.  If we were good, I would enjoy the atmosphere and the adrenaline.  But not good?  Hard to care.  And the thing is, there is no sign that the team is going to get better.

Yeah, I've been there. You just have to ride it out, I guess. Still, I encourage you to follow it, just in case you find yourself liking it!

Just imagine being a lifelong Cubs fan. We're just now getting to the point to where the front office actually cares about consistant winning, rather than just lining the Tribune's pockets with cash. It's been 98 years since we've had a championship....and we have to deal with the biggest crowd of fairweather fans on the planet. Words can't even describe how annoying that is.

Anywho, to be on topic: The Blackhawks suck. They suck bad. REALLY bad!

You live in Chicago and the Cubs are a baseball institution.  I live in Columbus and the Blue Jackets play hockey and are an expansion team.  Hard to feel sure that they will be here for 5 years, much less 98.  I would like them to be here that long, but hockey teams seem fairly mobile.

I really, really enjoyed Chara's ass-kicking of Vinnie (despite what Cherry had to say).  You guys are scary good, even without Hasek.

Yeah, in past years we've lacked the consistency to play well in all 7 games of a series, but I am hoping that Bryan Murray will take care of that.

Well, the Sens are there now!

Are you a Sabres fan, or a Leafs fan who is going for the Sabres?
