Seen this on Ebay today and wondered if anyone had heard anything about it before,  I hadn't (that's not saying much though).  Seems to have some unusual recordings on it.

I believe it's an australian pressing. It has an unique live cover of Ray Charles ''What'd I Say".
This is the only official release of that song, since it was forbidden for legal reasons in other countries. (and maybe they had to stop the australian pressing later as well)

That recording sounds like Al to me...     About the Ebay item, I hadn't heard about the Dennis/Rumbo song before

The description on the ebay is pretty accurate.

The price, unsure if that's reasonable; as in I have no idea - I bought a VG for really significantly less than that the other day and may soon be offloading a duplicate, but effed if I can figure out a price.

Here's a archived discussion with some goss about why it got canned:

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

WAY too high a price, IMO, Wild-Honey...especially considering how high a percentage of its contents is available elsewhere. Glad to see you didn't bite!!

I was lucky enough to run across this in a Kansas City record store in the Fall of '82 (within a couple of days having seen my second Beach Boys concert).  I was lucky enough to find it, and smart enough to buy it!  Smiley

Only 500 pressed , are you sure ?? I have 4 copies of this ( and no I don't want to sale any ) ie 0.8% and 2 are still sealed.
Great album , but was the single version of 'Cottonfields' really that rare ?
Still other than the tracks already mentioned there WAS ( at the time ) an unheard of mix of 'Good Vibes' the Dutch Mix of 'Bluebirds' and the 'I was Made To Love Her' with the superb Vocal Only tag

No, I'm not. Cheesy

In an above post, Alholio71 put a link to a previous thread discussion. I got the 500 number from that thread. I have no idea if it's accurate or not.

Actually the 500 may be accurate ( ie number of albums sold ) as it was an Australian release only and was pulled VERY QUICKLY after a not too happy BB's learned of its released ( What I'd Say was effectively a bootleg ) and threatened to sue  Undecided

I have a copy of that also - came out about September of '81. I think I picked it up that year or the year after. Steve McParland from Australia (author of "Our Favorite Recording Sessions" and other BB related books) put it together. Stephen's a great guy and loves his pints of beer!

Not sure it's worth 75 bucks but it is somewhat rare. Most of the stuff has been formally released or booted elsewhere.  Nice piece of vinyl though.

Here's an interview with Steve about the crap he went through before he withdrew the album from the market:

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

I bought this in the late fall of '81 for about nine bucks - but it got misplaced when I moved to the Monterey area for a while some years later, and never resurfaced. At the time it was a pretty nifty thing to have in the rarities dept - this was before I ever saw an "unofficial" BBs record. (The BBs were bypassed completely in the big early and mid '70s boot boom.) Indeed, the live "What'd I Say" has never since seen official release. I see that somebody at the Youtube clip thinks the tape is a bit fast. Hard to tell. What I'm wondering about is whether that really is Mike playing sax. I thought he had phased that out a while before they were in Australia.

I paid about $40 for mine, bought it off ebay about 10 years ago.  Good compilation, but as was mentioned, the music is available elsewhere.

I agree that the tape is too fast.  I slowed it down digitally and it sounded better, but I haven't listened to it in a while.

Don't know but it still is kinda rare today, isn't it? Compared to how much certain other songs get re-released on Greatest Hits/Best Ofs all the time, the singleversion (especially the monoversion) gets overlooked very much. In fact I only have it once, on the "Summer dreams"-CD from '93

I bought it via an ad in a music mag at the time of release.

So that's a dozen accounted for… 488 more to locate!

I'm pretty sure somebody on here recently confirmed that the What'd I Say track isn't even The Beach Boys.

No it is them and Brian and I discussed it. That is Mike on sax, plus this was released before on an Aussie comp all of which will be in the book.

Pretty sure this thread is about that Aussie comp.
