-by Anthony Bell, Contributing Writer;

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys underwent surgery for lower back problems before the band’s 50th anniversary tour, the musician and songwriter announced on Tumblr on Friday.

The “hereditary” back problems were the same that his younger brother Carl Wilosn suffered from, he said in the letter.

He continued to explain that last week, the problems resurfaced, forcing him to undergo another “cutting edge” procedure, from which he is now recovering but feeling “so much better already.”

Read the full letter from his Tumblr page below:

Hi all,

I’ve been reading the posts where some of you are concerned about my health in general.

I want to let you know that before the Beach Boys 50th tour started I was having some lower back issues right around the time we performed on the Grammys in February. This is the same type of problem that Carl used to suffer from, it's hereditary. But being able to tour with the Boys again meant so much to me that I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Luckily, I was able to get this new cutting edge procedure that totally worked. But after this last run in Australia it came back and I had the procedure redone this week.

I feel so much better already and can't wait to get back to my second home, London!!

See you soon

Love & Mercy

Well I hope the big guy shows in London but not at the cost of his health… we'll all live if he has to be elsewhere and we'll still have a ball with Mike, Al, Dave, Bruce and Jeff.

Less than two weeks now, guys n' gals…

And again, get well soon, Bri! Glad to hear that he's already getting better! I think the fact that he's back with the band and is having a blast contributed a lot to his recovery.

To celebrate his recovery, they will re-record — with slightly revised lyrics — a new version of "Brian's Back."

Echoing everyone here - get well big guy!

And after the tour, time to drop some of those LB's. Poundage does a number on a sensitive lower back. After all, too much sugar...

Hope the surgery is successful. It is sad to see our heroes getting old. Little Richard had unsuccessful hip replacement sugery a couple years ago. Sad to see him being wheeled out onstage in a chair.

Nothing worse than back pain.

Take it you've never had renal colic. Thought I was going to die. I'm told gallstones is about as bad.

BTW, nowhere in Brian's statement is the word "surgery" mentioned, rather "proceedure".

I felt the same way, I haven't read any news sites for the last day or two. When I got home from work and checked this I was a little worried that Brian had fallen ill.

Haemorrhoids, now THERE'S painful, 'specially when they snag on a barbed wire fence. Painful? You guys ain't felt nothing yet… Had an in-growing toenail once …

Procedure. Let's not putting spilling miztakes into Mr Wilson's mowf.
