Pet Sounds is the chicken; SMiLE is the egg.

But...but...the egg came first!

Smile is Humpty Dumpty.

And we're all the king's horses and all the king's men.

Unless Pet Sounds is the Goose that laid the Golden Egg (SMiLE)

Do we really know that the egg came first?

The obvious metaphor being creationism vs. evolution?

And, I did not anticipate Old Humpty (ISpaceman!) but that might fit as well.

Very clever analogy!  Wink

I thought the chicken vs. egg argument was more a philosophical one.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

I think we're pretty sure, yes.

Apples & oranges.

I like apples more than I like oranges. Just because two things are totally different doesn't mean you can't compare and contrast.

I prefer the fruit of an apple and the juice of an orange.

Apples & oranges.

What does Pink Floyd have to do with it?

Well..."Apples & Oranges" was composed by Syd Barrett and Syd's life in some ways paralleled Brian's.   Wink

Very true! In fact, sources told me in a dream that Brian and Syd actually collaborated. And the results were in the form of Daniel Johnston compositions.

Making a choice like this should only be made with a gun to one's head. Given that, however, I'll go with Pet Sounds for its consistent level of quality. The Smile music often reaches greater heights ("Cabinessence," "Surf's Up") but it was abandoned in part because the LP as a whole was not jelling.

"Apples and Oranges"--a very manic-depressive song, would have fit in nicely on Smiley Smile.
