My best friend Daiana flew to Switzerland, tour arranged by program dedicated to dwarf people, ticket cost & everything's covered. She'll be back in 3 weeks. Me & Sonya, the other best friend, miss her but missing together isn't that bad/ boring. :D
Bought the 4-pedal feline chap nice little embroidered pillow, then he sleeps well in his basket.

I went for a walk on my typical route to the nearest lake, only to see one or more races (there were runners, there were bicyclists) blocking my path. I rerouted toward a nearby creek, only to see my reroute blocked by the bicyclists again. I rererouted. It was moderately annoying, in that the lakes and creeks are substantially more pleasant than residential and commercial streets.

Sometimes I think racing cyclists would be better off walking and enjoying a bit more of the view instead of scaring the life out of folks going for a stroll. I have less problems with runners as I have been a runner myself, although not for a number of years now.  Grin

Today our grandson unexpectedly came to stay the night so I made lasagna for two and a half. Smokin

Aunt's birthday at sunday. Will buy the best mini-cake before anybody else in the neighbor shop gets it, bring her & stay to eat it & the other dishes she'll cook (she's good cook). Talk with Lena, her teenage daughter coz she's funner than aunt to talk with, despite the fact she's not musical AT ALL. But we get along famously.

The Captain and JK - I am always amazed at the interesting things I see while walking that I fail to see while biking or driving.

RRA! - Sounds like a lovely day with Auntie. I am chuckling at how you just come right out and say what you think -  the niece is "funner
than aunt to talk with."

Nice to see you back. But, again, you misread - Lena (Helen) isn't my niece. She is cousin. Her mother is aunt who will celebrate 46th birthday at Sunday 29th. Anyhoo, what did you do during absence at Smiley?

Yes., I misread.  Smiley Smile time for me is when I am very sleepy and rarely have my reading glasses with me. Sorry! During absence from SS
I've been battling my teaching assistant who is supposed to be in charge of handling behavior in the classroom. He literally does nothing, forcing me to teach and handle serious issues that tend not to occur in regular schools. His excuse? I don't understand the hard lives the girls have had, and should not be bothered if they shout and sing during instruction, run around the room shooting the stapler, etc. Right. Smiling will help them have a good future. Actually, I am quite warm and fun as a teacher, have degrees in social work and education, and have been working with troubled kids, oh, I don't know, since before he was born. But I know nothing. Tomorrow we meet with the principal, at which time I will pretend to care about how much he wants to be the students' friend.

Don't people in the U.S. get summer holiday? It seems you, Americans, don't get paid leave. As I understand by chatting offline with few posters, you just get fortnight, few days of paid holiday during whole year (discounting the official holidays).

Ouch! That is a sore spot in the US.
Paid leave (holidays/vacations) are not guaranteed here. I have a niece and nephew who work at jobs with no benefits - no paid vacation or sick time. You miss a day, you don't get paid.
The U.S. Is one of the few countries that doesn't have guaranteed paid maternity leave.

There's this weird ethic in this country about not taking vacations. There was even an automobile commercial in which a guy boasted that, unlike countries such as France, he wasn't taking a vacation, insinuating that it was more manly or something. Weird.

There's this fear of "creeping socialism" if guaranteed annual/sick time is given. And with those with leave, many can't use all of the time or have to take "working vacations," where they have to keep in touch with their offices.

I was fortunate. As a State of Louisiana employee I had holidays off with pay. The days I had off were: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day (third Monday in January), Mardi Gras (of course!), Good Friday (Friday before Easter), July 4th, Labor Day (first Monday in September), Thanksgiving Day and the day after (Thursday and Friday). A perk of working at a university was getting paid holidays from Christmas Eve (December 24) through New Year's Day.
In leap years we got Memorial Day off (last Monday In May).

In addition, my leave continued to accumulate the whole time I was working. The last few years it was almost impossible to be able to take more than a one week vacation. A fortnight - no way! So when I retired I had about 12 weeks of annual leave left, and 1 1/2 years of sick leave (I almost never called in sick - maybe 3-4 times over 30 years).

Regular school teachers get off 8-9 weeks in the summer, a week in the spring, a week between Christmas and New Year's Day. I enjoyed some of that, although I found myself taking classes and doing planning, etc., for about half of that. I work in a residential treatment center that has school all year, both because the kids need something to do in addition to treatment and most have missed a lot of school and/or are very low in terms of knowledge and skills. This is the first year I have not been able to get away, even to my beloved beach. Damn. I'll try for a weekend soon.

Took a midmorning walk to, partway around, and back from the closest lake. Pulled some weeds. Bought a twenty-five cent glass of lemonade from the little neighbor kids' stand. Put a pot of mixed beans (black, pinto, and kidney) on the stove with onions, jalapenos, tomatoes, a ton of garlic, and a nice bunch of herbs. I plan now to sit outside in the backyard to read away the sunny afternoon.

Captain, sounds like you had a wonderful day yesterday, particularly the bean dish and being able to read outside!

Had a little birthday party of sorts in the hospital for my Mom, who is now 94.
When will I learn to just keep quiet when someone starts talking politics?

After church service, lit a candle at St Jude statue. May the Sirius XM thing go well.

Listened to a lot of music tonight:
An album I heard a lot as a kid but probably hadn't heard the whole thing in 50 years - Midnight Ride by Paul Revere and the Raiders.
Then listened to Holland. Played "Steamboat" twice. Entering my top 10 list?

Then three long jazz classics to really make me happy :
Diminuendo in Blue and Crescendo in Blue - Duke Ellington (and Paul Gonsalves!) At Newport 1956
The entire recording of Sing Sing Sing by Benny Goodman orchestra, Carnegie Hall 1938
Castilian Drums by Dave Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall. Mr Joe Morello shows how it's done.

I'm tired but not sleepy if that makes any sense . Should try to get some sleep . Tomorrow is another day. But tomorrow is actually today now as it's after midnight. Gotta get to bed now before I decide to listen to "Good Mornin '" from Singin in the Rain .

Update: she bought souvenirs - square-shaped as I like (favorite geometric figure due to its stylishness & esp. strictness, dislike rounded edges). Which gift to you is the best anybody gave to you for free?

NOLA BB Fan - Best to your mother. BTW, I just saw Singin' in the Rain last summer for the first time!

RRA! - You come across like someone who prefers non-rounded shapes. (I feel most comfortable with ovals, circles, curves everywhere. No idea why.) The best gift anyone gave me that cost nothing was when my aunt, who knew how messed up my parents were and therefore how low my self-esteem was, saw how I was struggling to stand up for myself. She took my hands in hers and said, "Here. Take my strength. I don't need much anymore." It was the first and only time in my life that anyone gave me approval for protecting myself.

Well it looks like I didn't phrase it well - which tangible existing gift is the best you're given by anybody?

Difficult to stay dried eyed reading that, E. Now that beats any tangible gift any day! The first and only time? Shocked

I hope you feel you're getting approval and support here. Smiley

It's your opinion it beats any tangible gift. Hope Buckethead isn't destracted by what you replied to her & answers my clarified question as I disagree with you, people like getting gifts, let's not deny & am sure Buckethead got many gifts at Christmas, at birthday, at random.

JK - Thanks for the kind response and support!

RRA1 - Let's see. I received from "Santa" when I was 10 a new "Sting Ray" bike. This was a very big deal, as my brothers and I typically opened presents of clothes that we needed anyway, and some candy. That bike took me farther than I had ever gone in my little town, even to other towns in the area. My travels were a marvelous escape, giving me new feelings of freedom and possibilities. I became very lost several times, relying on kind people to let me use their phones to call home for a ride. How about you, RRA1 and JK? What were your best gifts ever?

Mine was probably the old record player I and my brother got in, what, 1960 or '61. It was my first step in a magical quest that has lasted until today. ;=)

2Buckethead: Interesting, I read about Stingray car. But there is Stingray bike? You were 10 in the 60s then, correct?

Best gift to me definitely the copper brooch with 2 cats in it - tall & short. Tall got black stone eyes, short 2 holes instead of eyes. It's very stylish, unique brooch, you don't see anything like it now. Before tiny jubilee, 10th birthday in late fall/ winter mother went to jewellery sale, me too. We see various things, sth. catches glimpse - it's cat brooch. Immediate like, I hint it would be cool gift. Mother said she didn't like it, she'll buy better gift. Sad-faced, go back home. Tomorrow, mother cooks this & that, in the evening she gives gift. - it's cat brooch. :D I saved it in safe, it lies there today. Single thing saved in safe.

Stingray bikes were rather low to the ground with a long banana-shaped seat and thick-ish tires. The handle bars looked like the letter V with slightly U-shaped bottom. The rider's hands went on little bars coming off of the top of the V on each side. These were the coolest bikes around! (At least until the early 70s when ten-speed bikes were in vogue. I got my first job at 12 to save up for one.)

Love your story of the cat brooch. There is probably no greater joy to a kid than to receive something as a present that you wanted very much but thought you would never get. I have a whole collection of animal jewelry. I don't like to wear plain pins, necklaces and earrings. They have to "say" something, especially about the wearer. I hope that you take the kittie brooch out of the safe to wear it once in a while and that it brings you special enjoyment when you put it on.
