He may not be Tony Asher or Mike Love but he did write some classic Beach Boys songs like In My Room, 409, Lonely Sea, and We'll Run Away, and then there are the cheesy story songs like County Fair, Heads You Win, Tails I Lose, Cuckoo Clock.

Gimme some root beer!

Made the word "arbitrarily" fit into a Pop song. Respect for that. '3 Surfer Boys' is a neat lyric, done with Nick Venet.

We'll Run Away is fantastic lyrically and musically.

"It wasn't too long ago when our folks were
Were going through the same thing we are now
But one thing they're forgetting
A thing they're not regretting
They ran away and got married anyhow"

This is another one of those revelatory lyrics like in When I Grow Up ( To Be A Man ) which show little quirks about generations and the generation gap which fuels a person's world.

Did it ever occur to you, Cable, how wise and bountiful God was to put breasts on a woman? Just the right number in just the right place. Did you ever notice that, Cable?

We'll Run Away is definitely one of the most underrated BB's songs. Brian's vocal on the bridge is one of his best non-falsetto moments.

One thing that rarely gets mentioned about the Wilson/Usher collaborations is that Gary wasn't a traditional lyricist like Van Dyke or Roger Christian. Usher was truly invloved in the music end of things and in some cases, like Lonely Sea, Gary was more of the composer and Brian was more of the lyricist.

Thank Him
Think, think about the loveliest thing
Think about a song we all sing
Think about our love

Try, try to find a happier joy
Sweeter than a girl and a boy
Sweeter than our love

Nicer than a garden of beautiful flowers
Deeper than the ocean you watch by the hour

Marvel, marvel at this feeling we share
Thank Him for a beauty so rare
Thank Him for our love

Thank Him for our love...

Written with Norberg, tho'. Not Usher.

Thanks. I guess Him is God. Interesting to consider. "He only knows what I'd be without you."

One of those weird things that happnes to me now and then...years ago, a friend who was a Disney animator called me and said "you're the big Beach Boys fan, right?"  He had just been to dinner with his real estate agent- a co-worker's wife- and she had mentioned that her dad had co-written a lot of Beach Boys songs but he could not recall what name she had said.   I asked him to name the songs and he said"'409', 'In My Room'..."  Unfortunately, this was after Gary was gone.  She had stories of being around Brian a lot during the solo album.

So Gary Usher's son-in-law animated the Genie in "Alladin" and directed "Pocahontas"...
