Since Jay's wonderful thread has been lost to the doldrums of this subforum, I figured it's worth a revival!

The original thread was great. I have you and Jay to thank for introducing me to the delights of Throbbing Gristle (which in turn led me to Psychic TV) and Silver Apples.
I tried a "The Residents" thread before and no one bit, but they really are worth checking out if you like weird and highly original music.

I'm about 7:00 into listening to "Come Out". It's interesting that if you let your mind kind of "wander", it almost starts to sound somewhat musical. I mean, you can make a beat out of it.

Interesting topic.
De La Soul - "Patti Dooke"
If you never listened to them, they kind of did Jazz rap. They hated ignorant rap that was all about posturing, they just liked making fun music that didn't really mean much. Very creative, and great production on most of their stuff. The first guy is "Dave" or "Dove", or "Plug Two" or "Trugoy" (yogurt, spelled backwards). The second rapper is "Posdynous", or "Pos", or "Plug One" or "Plug one the Wonder" or "Pasta the Lucky". These guys were incredible.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exdbzs15ebw
I don't completely get them, but I think the whole point was to not take yourself seriously.
De La Soul - Tread Water
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nruVyJmtcqo
Some of the most creative hiphop I've heard. These guys were WIDELY criticised and ridiculed after they released songs like this on their first album. All the lyrics are pretty clever but manage to not be too pretentious.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roger Miller - "My Uncle Used to Love Me But She Died"
At first listen, it's a bunch of nonsense by the genius.... but if you look into his life a little bit, it becomes even more perplexing. Roger Miller's father died when he was very young, and his mother couldn't support him and his two brothers; so Roger and his two brothers all were split up and went to live with their father's three brothers. Roger moved to Texas, and hated his uncle so much he ran away from home a dozen times as a child. His next door neighbor was the guy who wrote "Flying Purple People Eater".... which explains Rogers penchant for strange music. So, with that bio, what does this song mean?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH3yYcc0gBc
----------------------------------------------------------------
Merle Kilgore - "Five Card Stud"
The famous Scopitone. If you're not familiar with them, they were video jukeboxes in airports and bus stations back in the 60's... they shot very strange music videos for them, like this weird-ass song. Great stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoH5xKC3xoE
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kokane - "Night Locs".
There's a great rapper named "Kokane" who is the son of one of Motown's songwriters (His father wrote "Just My Imagination"). Really interesting style and crazy ass songs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyUCRpwOIzs
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Suga Free - "On My Way"
Another crazy rapper, this guy thinkis he's a pimp. So he does things like grow his fingernails long. I think it's supposed to show all his women that he's better than them, I don't get it. I don't think he's homosexual, it's a 'pimp' thing. Pretty good rapper, just very, very weird. Anyways, weird music thread: Suga Free is relevant.

There is something about this that sounds...wrong. I can't really explain it. Out of tune, possibly? Or off key? Whatever it is, it gives me a very "uneasy" feeling.

There is a recording that would be great for this thread, unfortunately I have only a vague memory of it. My dad played it for me once when I was real young, when we were going through his old records and playing them. I think it was done by Alice Cooper. But I've looked through the lyrics to a lot of his songs and I can't find it. It starts off with a drumbeat, I think. It was like a "marching band" beat. It was about somebody that was about to be hanged I remember that there was narration leading up to the execution. I remember the line "What have I done to deserve such a fate?" being spoken. I only remember it because John Lennon sang that exact line in "I'm A Loser". Does anybody know of the recording that I'm talking about? I haven't heard it in probably close to twenty years now. I remember that it terrified me, and that was the one and only time my dad played it.
