Where is a certain Mr. Cohen today? Wink
Can anyone fill in for him?

All this means is that WallOfSilence is now screwing the fans at an unprecedented level: if these are the mono and stereo remasters, the fans have been raked over the coals being forced to pay for them twice. If they are the remasters, the lack of any marketing muscle tells me that they will be somehow inferior, and may be just reissues of the late-90s single disc releases. Worse, they might be lossy audio or contain subpar packaging written in Portuguese. Most likely these are an error with Amazon, because there's been no word from the Capitol tower! And Brian Wilson hasn't tweeted anything. Nor have we seen a tracklist. They could be coming out in 8-track. Also, I believe Capitol is just buying time and they have contracted with God to direct an asteroid to come crashing into the earth and ending life as we know it, thus getting them off the hook so they won't have to answer to the hard-working fans for their WallOfSilence and how it has exploited and oppressed we the 99%, and we should Occupy Tower to protest this outrage! There aren't even any bonus tracks!!! The Cubs will win the World Series before we get product from Capitol that will make me happy!!!!!

 LOL LOL LOL LOL

well played, Catbirdman!  well played!

These are listed at the UK site also, aloing with this:

Greatest Hits: 50 Big Ones [Import]
Beach Boys (Artist) | Format: Audio CD

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Greatest-Hits-50-Big-Ones/dp/B008U6QAA0/

So, 50 Big Ones it is!  No further details given as yet.

CORRECTION: other than the Sept 25 release date, same as the imported remasters.

Imported to the UK, that is: the US and Japanese ASIN numbers appear to differ on the different Amazon sites.  This might be US discs after all, Phil; that price might well fall.

Permission to be insufferably smug and say "told ya so" at ten minute intervals ?  Roll Eyes
We all (most) know to trust you. Just a shame about not knowing about U.S. release of the Mono/Stereo albums. Could have saved me $50.00 on the 3 titles I ordered. So Andrew, are these in addition to or in place of the Box Set?

The rebooted box set is a different project entirely. Patience, my robots... patience.  Smiley

I have feeling that 50BO will be a VERY average compilation consisting of hardly anything beyond Endless Summer + PS hits + GetchaBack & Kokomo

I have a feeling it will consist of 50 tracks dating 1961-2012, and that the vast majority will be US charting singles. For Joe Q. Public, I'd call that an outstanding compilation.

Agree. If the comp was called "The Very Best of the Beach Boys" we'd have a gripe worth fighting for but any BBs Greatest Hits is still full of aural gold.

I do fancy I heard on the wind, a faint and distant weeping, punctuated with something that sounded like "f***, he was right again".

But that could have just been my imagination running wild...

Was just wonderin'. Seems like a whole lot of Beach Boys for a one year period, including TSS from last November.

As I've been saying for a good few months, the release of TSS and the entire 50th anniversary ruckus were/are all part of the bigger gameplan, which was instigated summer 2010. Drink deeply now, the well's running dry soon.

One thing to give Phil credit for is his call on the lack of info from Capitol. Amazon and other retailers are posting this stuff up faster than the official announcements are going out. It really is no longer a country by country thing anymore. Info is spread worldwide in seconds. Had I bought all 12 Japanese issues I'd be really pissed today. Most of us really thought that just because Japan got them didn't mean we here in the U.S. would, as well. Even today, the U.S releases are on Amazon before an official announcement. Seems a bit ass-backwards to me.

On the basis of the last few days' performance I'd say the Phil knocking is somewhat misplaced – he's posted some darn useful info and even on one occasion out-expertised our resident expert!  Pessimism aside, he's one damn knowledgeable guy and goes into stuff very thoroughly. That he has a different outlook on the outcome can be bloody infuriating but I'll take my hat off to him - he's filled in a fair few blanks recently.

Oh, I totally agree. He gave us some great information to the questions I had asked a few pages ago. I didn't mean to bash Phil in my parody, and I hope it's obvious that it was an affectionate send-up. I have never, nor will I ever, attack anyone personally on the internet.

Also his info on the seeming likely demise of EMI/Capitol has been interesting to say the least. He follows the game, it has to be said.

I'd no real gripe about the lack of any announcement from the record company but NO WAY should they have allowed the news to leach out through Amazon' listings the way it has. I also feel sorry for Mark & Alan, the availability of whose work has become the subject of a load of fan moaning.

FYI - including B sides, a BW solo release that was on a BB album and two Xmas singles, there are 57 Hot 100 charting US BB songs.

One would have to assume they'd leave off "Beach Boys Medley"... probably get rid of the two Christmas singles as well... that still leaves 4 songs that will not likely appear on this set.  Add to that the likely inclusions of "That's Why God Made The Radio" and "Isn't It Time (re-recorded)" and we're back up to 6 charted songs that will likely not appear on this set.

I'd venture to guess that "Ten Little Indians", despite being on the Hot 100, will not appear on this set.  Likely ditto "Peggy Sue".

Unless "50 Big Ones" is just the name of the compilation and there will be 56 (give or take) tracks...

Gotta love the guessing game...       Cool

On second thought, I SHARE NOTHING.

Partly because I just got an email that said the nearest store is sold out for a long while, and partly because of the warning.

Also, yeah, I said I would be ripping as flacs but the sharing stuff could be TOTALLY UNRELATED.

Question: why exactly are people so OCD about the contents of the Greatest Hits CD?  It's not directed to us hardcore fans who already have everything.  I have no idea why it matters.  Considering we're still expecting a new box set, I don't think we should waste our energy on whether or not a couple obscure songs are going to be on a Joe Public greatest hits CD.

I'm just intrigued by the release of 50 Big Ones cuz it's a big, official release by the band. Its not one of the things the label slips out. It's a release they care about, like Sounds of Summer, The Warmth of the Sun, etc. And most importantly, aren't there gonna be new songs on here? At least I'd assume that new version of "Isn't It Time". So new songs by a group that, maybe a year ago, I'd never thought I'd hear new recordings by? I can live with that.

I'm not arguing. I just like to predict things.

"Us hardcore fans" will buy the damn thing anyway, for the same reason we're arguing the toss regarding the 50 tracks contained therein: because it's what we do, dammit.

Yeah...........YEAH!

In fact, there aren't any bonus tracks, and there's been no word from the Capitol tower!

Anyone seen the prices of the US releases on amazon jp? Far cheaper for the Japanese fans to buy imported discs from the US than to buy home-grown product.

Now I feel naive -  can someone please explain the economics? Are the US releases likely to be very different packaging, maybe only stereo OR mono but not both? Or are the Japanese pressings on solid gold?    Undecided
