Sorry, I find it too hard to listen to those awful samples through headphones… it's the aural equivalent of watching a video shot with a helmet cam – makes me feel travel sick.  I hear what Andrew's saying, absolutely but couldn't bear a relisten to check out Quzi's theory – I didn't hear it at all on the one fly-through.

What do you mean? Who is to say they didn't mean to use the album version. Or is the parenthetical "On My Way To Sunny Californ-i-a" part supposed to indicate that it should have been the single version?
The latter, as that is how the single mix was named.

Much prefer that title than the confusing "California Saga: California" appearing on a compilation. I think it's just a matter of using the revised title while using the album mix.

I also noticed, what a f*** up!

o yeah, major f*** up.

I haven't listened again, but I'm pretty sure I heard Brian's "I'm on way" when I was browsing through the sample, it was just really buried. Is that the norm on the album mix?

Yeah. I noticed it before hearing the single mix, or at least heard something that sounded like Brian there. Once you hear the single mix, you can tell easily - he's there, just very, very buried. Could be some kind of bleed-through, I don't know.

I agree with runners that the tracklist is random and hopeless, at least they placed all the gudd stuff on disc 2. Some of the choices were questionable and DIA shoulda been stereo as mentioned.

I dig the stereo Darlin' but the stereo Wild Honey barely sounds stereo to me, I was hoping they would make it more wide...

DIA can't be stereo, and when you hear stereo good vibrations, you might realize its better that way.

So they're using the album version as opposed to the single version? If so, does it really matter, it's nok like we're actually going to listen to the compilation Wink

If it is the album version, and not just the wrong mix of the 45rpm version, then, as this is tagged as a a 2012 remaster, the implication could be that the Holland album has been readied for re-issue.  Just speculatering…

"Do It Again" is missing tracks? I wasn't aware. Sad

The extraction mix of "Good Vibrations" seems to be one of, if not the only extraction mix that works well from start to finish. It's the only one I've heard in full, but the samples of the songs we know make heavy use of it sound a little wonky thus far. People who've heard them seem to confirm this.

I was opposed to the idear, but that one in particular isn't bad, to me.

Good Vibes is easily the best of the "extraction" tracks.

Yeah, and Don't Worry Baby sure sounds like the 2009 Summer Love Songs version, not the original stereo mix.

Why would they use the old one?

Well, I mean, I guess they wouldn't.  Agreed the 2009 remix does sound nice.  It's just...sometimes my head spins trying to follow album mono vs stereo versions vs single versions and remasters vs remixes of their catalogue.  With the album reissues, I thought the trend was to use accurate/historical mixes of mono/stereo where available and I guess the compilations stray from this thought process and just shoot for the best sounding versions in the eyes of the producers of the set.  I guess the 2012 reissue of Shut Down Vol. 2 will use the same Don't Worry Baby stereo as the twofer and original stereo LP where Brian's vocal is firmly in left channel.

Yes, the original stereo mix is used for Don't Worry Baby on the new mono/stereo remasters.

The 2009 stereo mix is damn near mono, anyway.

Well, on CD,with Don't Worry Baby you only have 4 mixes to keep track of:
Mono Single - GH2
Mono LP - New mono/stereo Shut Down Vol. 2, some older comps
Stereo Original - 90/94 release, 2001 2-fer, and same as above
Stereo Remix - Summer Love Songs & 50 Big Ones/Greatest Hits

If SOT is any indication, a stereo mix is definitely possible ...

I'm actually surprised they're using the original version rather than the reunion version.  I mean obviously the original is much better but still.

Actually scratch that, Capitol LOST the master tape while working on Stack O' Tracks.

HOWEVER, our buddy Mr. Desper apparently made a copy! I'm not sure if it's a mono mixdown or master tape copy, however.

Don't ba-understand why we know Mark and co. have a stereo mix of the album prepared (and have for some time), they're re-releasing most albums from that era, they're including two songs from it in stereo on here, but no planned release of the album ;(

"Darlin'" sounds purty cool - I never even noticed those horn parts during the verse, only the chorus.

This would've been the perfect place to release a proper stereo "Do It Again", too, but ah well. Considering the wealth of new mixes and material we've gotten this year, I can't complain about that one much.

Edit: I only now realize how the track order is a bit of a clusterf*** in spots. "Getcha Back" between "Wendy" and "The Little Girl I Once Knew"? teh hell. The entire tracklist reads like they threw it in Winamp, hit ""Randomize list" and said "HELL YEH DAWG"

Darlin' seems like it's gonna be a good mix - a lot of things popped out at me even at that low bit rate. Hopefully it'll be on the big box. Not buying either greatest hits issue.

Really, they should be doing at least the 50 Big Ones thing in chronological order. Charting the band's early years all the way up to now would make the perfect flow and the most sense.

That's what an iPod playlist is for.  :-)

Didn't realize we'd get some new stereo mixes of previously mono'd songs.  Just placed my order.  Interesting how the stereo mixes of both "Wild Honey" and "Darlin'" really bring out Carl's voice.  You can really tell he was just beltin' them out as hard as he could.  :-)
