I'm in awe over this beautiful tune.
In my mind, it's Mike Love's absolute best.
Every note is perfect.
Why in the heck isn't it any longer?

It definitely leaves me wanting more.

Maybe that's the point?

It's OK, but the seven-minute, 27-verse version (with the sax and guitar solos in the middle) is the one to have.  Wink

It might be THE most overrated Beach Boys' song which is placed soooooo much at the wrong spot. It should've followed "Transcendental Meditation" and closed the Friends album. police

I didn't say it was the best Beach Boys song.
Just Mike's.

It should have closed it though.

Agreed: it is one of Mike's greatest vocals. The piano/organ track is achingly beautiful.

Friends is perfect in nearly every way...and this was the best way to start off that album.

I have to admit that for the longest time I always thought it was Brian who was singing Meant For You Shocked

God must’ve smiled the day Brian Wilson was born!

Still the shortest BBs track...and still one of the sweetest. This to Pet Sounds to Add Some Music would be a good triple play.

A fan posted recently that he enjoyed the song less once he knew Mike sang it instead of Brian.

No kidding – MIKE?HuhHuh   Does this guy Mike sing on any other Beach Boys songs? I'd like to know so I can revise my opinion of them…  Grin

Meant for You is a gem… one of the joys of the Beach Boys' catalogue is the wealth of short musical moments of magic, whether they're outtakes or realised compositions.  I've just compiled a 25-track CD to entertain a pal and have included snippets like the string overdub for Don't Talk, the final Water Chant overdub from Vol 17, Old Man River and the Can't Wait Too Long a-capella snippet from Hawthorne CA…   they make it all the more magical.

I too thought this was Brian for quite a while.  Knowing it's Mike doesn't change anything for me....great song. One of the true little unknown gems in the Beach Boys catalog, IMO.

A great intro track, but I wish it had a cold ending like Brian's remake on the I JUST WASN"T MADE FOR THESE TIMES soundtrack album; the original fades out just as it's taking off for the next level.
