Looking forward to the show. Hopefully we'll see a interview with the group since they are celebrating 50 years.

I live near Niagara Falls. Saw the set up going on tonight at the Falls. Gonna be a huge event. Excitement building here in anticipation. Also saw Nik Wallenda talking to the local media. Of course I have to try to watch The Beach Boys. Did not know about their appearance till reading it here on this thread.

I know we've already had enough of the political/O'Reilly/Johnston debates. I just wish they'd book a better place to do an interview. It's one thing if there's on a show that's a talk show which happens to have a host with some known political views or whatnot. But other than the clueless Larry King, there has never been much non-political crap on these cable stations.
I've seen the other O'Reilly bits that Love has done, and O'Reilly strikes me as someone who feels he's an expert on the band because he can name the members and knows some of the personnel changes from over the years. He didn't seem particularly respectful of anyone in the band other than those who are in front of him at the moment. He totally didn't challenge anything when Love came on a few years go during the "Smile" related lawsuits. He just let Mike say what he wanted to say. It was kind of odd.
I can't believe Brian's handlers are letting him on this show. I say this objectively, whether I like the show or not, this show doesn't have the format, style, or politics that would be ideal for Brian. I guess he'll just let Mike do most of the talking.

The BB's have some cross-town competition for early morning music fans -- Justin Bieber is playing the Today Show outside of the 30 Rock studios.

I watched GMA's coverage this a.m. live, what there was of it. They hyped up the Beach Boys quite a bit, but didn't show much of them. They showed far more/too much of the audience and other things going around -- and when they did show the band playing, no one could get a camera on whoever was singing lead. I'm sure the folks at Central Park got a whole lot more of the BBs than the TV audience did.
The guys sounded good, especially for so early in the morning. One cool thing I noted was someone in their 20s singing along with "That's Why God Made the Radio." Other songs shown were part of "Help Me Rhonda," part of "Good Vibrations," and "California Girls."
Other notes:
* At the end of the group interview, one of the guys (sounded like Al) told Robin Roberts off-camera, "I hope you're feeling better," very classy
* Mike and Brian wore matching shirts
* Nick Walusko absent
* Great Brianism moment: when asked about what's different about touring fifty years later, Brian deadpanned, "Well, we've had a lot of practice."

Emdeeh,
Thanks for the info. Did the Beach Boys perform during the last 30 mins of the show or was it much earlier??? I don't need to sit through the entire show if I know.
Thanks,
Les

This is brutal. 80 minutes in and no actual beach boys. A lot of worthless coverage of Niagara Falls for a tightrope walk taking place in the evening. More news that we all heard yesterday. GMA sucks.

I just got home and haven't seen the footage yet, but it could've been me haha. Mike seemed to notice that I was singing all the words during the soundcheck. I swear I felt like I was the only hardcore fan there! I overheard the girls behind me say "Aren't they too old to be singing about girls? They should be singing about bingo." Mind you, they showed up at 6 am with everyone else who wanted to get close to the stage. Consider me baffled. There were various other instances where it was made clear that these were mainly just casual fans.
Anyway, it was awesome to be so close to the stage during soundcheck. Made eye contact with Mike, Al, and a few of the guys. BW was doing his eyes closed, weird mouth movements routine. Couldn't help but feel bad for the guy, at first. He perked up when Foskett went over and talked to him for a few minutes, then Al went over and asked Brian about the chord changes for Graduation Day. Al seemed to be going over it while everyone was setting everything up.
The vocals were next to impossible to hear live.
Songs performed:
Soundcheck/Rehearsal
1) California Girls (just band)
Enter the principle members. Al suggests they play "Custom Machine". Totten says he'd love to do it, but Mike refuses.
2) That's Why God Made The Radio x2
3) Good Vibrations
4) Help Me Rhonda (snippet)
Actual performance (the order may be off)
1) Help Me Rhonda (snippet)
2) California Girls
3) That's Why God Made The Radio
4) Good Vibrations x3 (1st time was a snippet for the TV show, 2nd was a false start, 3rd was a full performance for the internet)
And that was it. It was cool to see them together in the flesh. Band sounded great. Brian nailed the vocal on GV on the 3rd take. He adlibbed his way into the slow section, which was pretty cool, but again it was VERY hard to hear the vocals live. Foskett was essentially inaudible. Al and Mike were the only ones that I could hear cutting through.
Was hoping for a longer show a la Central Park '71, but overall a very cool experience.

Ahh, nope. I was wearing a NYC T-shirt and a black beanie.
Good to hear there were was someone else who knew the words though.
Just to note, although I sang through TWGMTR, it was mainly because I couldn't hear the vocals.
However, when everyone was singing Good Vibrations, I casually yelled "LET BRIAN SING IT!". They shut up.

The empty stage
Darian enters, sets up his keyboard
Scott joins Darian on stage to set up his keyboard
Oh sh*t, it's a Beach Boy. Rockin the shorts, like the Bruce we all know and love. Funny thing, he walked up to the audience right where we were and asked us if anyone had any breakfast (for him).
Brian arrives, assisted by Jeff.
Al arrives. Starts noodling on Graduation Day
Al then walks over to Brian and they talk for a few minutes. It seems Al's inquiring about the chords for Graduation Day
Mike arrives on stage

Just got back from this. What an interesting experience. Seeing them soundcheck, being able to pick out each guy's part (haven't been able to do that to the degree I could today), seeing how the band interacts to build this music...
The best part, though, was watching these fascinating men we're all here because of interact on a personal level. Al really seems to be soaking up being with these guys again. He hung around Brian a lot. They poked around the keys together, sang a bit together, he brought his guitar over, these guys care for each other immensely. Brian seemed to perk up the most when Dave would come 'round to the keyboard to play some chords and have a laugh. Al and Mike shared some laughs as well. When all the guys would go around Brian's keyboard (before interview segments), Bruce, Dave, and Mike would all give Brian back rubs simultaneously and individually. Attached is a picture of just that. Brian particularly seemed to enjoy his back rub from Bruce.
When Brian called for the audience to quit with the beach balls, he said, "some people are trying to watch, and it's distracting for them," which is how I was feeling about the beach balls (being so fixated on all the things I stated above). In my head, Brian called for the beach balls to stop so that I could delve into my fascination with the process, and spend those moments watching and learning. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't, but either way, he helped pave the way for a truly unique and enjoyable experience (though, the beach balls came back with a vengeance later on). Despite the constant yelling around me for Kokomo and Barbara Ann, the crowd, made up of many vacationers who seemed to mostly be there for the tv show experience, were very respectful and patient. The Beach Boys are truly unique in that they are loved by so many. Even though large portions of the populace only know the big, big hits, The Beach Boys transcend the stigmas attached to all walks of life. The name itself, The Beach Boys, means something so massive. It was a real joy to watch them make these people of all walks of life happy and content in the moments they were in their presence.
Though, I'll never quite understand the utter joy people get from thinking they may be seen for split seconds on television, but such is the nature of a camera in the face I guess.

Yeah, the beach balls were terrible. Now I see why people have complained about them in the past.
Even Brian picked up on how much everyone hated them.
It's a health hazard, imo. Babies, elderly people, etc. I got hit in the head a few times, as did a lot of folks. Very annoying.
Even after it was clear that we didn't want the beach balls, the producers insisted on having them present for the final performance of Good Vibrations. It got to the point where people were catching them, and placing them on the ground.
