Offhand, I'm gonna say "Yvonne's the One" by Paul McCartney. Heard it on the radio once in LA, and thought, "OMG, it's his new single, and it sounds great!" But it never came out...by him, anyway. (A latter-day 10cc used it instead.)

What a great song. And his vocal performance: it sounds like he's being shyly quiet, so that maybe Linda won't hear.

My top picks....

1) Michael Jackson - "Behind The Mask", the original Thriller-era version.  (A heavily mangled remix was released on that "Michael" catastrophe.)

2) The Beatles - "Sour Milk Sea."  The full band version (created by combining the Beatles' backing track for Lomax with George's demo) should have been included on the Anthology... and could have easily been a hit single for the Beatles in 1968.

3) Pink Floyd - "Scream Thy Last Scream."  It's almost impossible to think of this as 'unreleased' anymore, because every fan has heard it by now; but it still counts, as it has yet to appear on an officially sanctioned release.

4) Bee Gees - "Castles In The Air."  HUGE FRIGGING LOSS not putting this out... this is EASILY my favorite Bee Gees song, ever.  Bar none.  As with most of the scrapped LP 'A Kick In The Head Is Worth Eight In the Pants,' this was relegated to the vaults.

5) They Might Be Giants - "What Is Everyone Staring At?"  A Dial-A-Song track.  Technically, it saw release, albeit in drastically rewritten form, as "Sleepwalkers"; but the original is still one of my favorite TMBG songs.  Shame it's only available in horrid quality.

6) The Beach Boys - "Battle Hymn Of The Republic."  No, I am not kidding.  I've never really found fault with this, and it's always a major earworm for me.  Ditto "Rollin' Up To Heaven," although it's more than obvious why that particular song never saw release.

7) Chumbawamba - "One Last Taxi Ride."  I always felt that 'Swingin' With Raymond' was a half-baked concept album, divided into somewhat short "Love Songs" and "Hate Songs" halves.  The "Love" half lost the most material in the final line-up, including this beautiful tune which has never seen release, even as a B-side.

8] The Beatles - "Aerial Tour Instrumental."  Really out-of-left-field choice here; I mean, this is obviously just a particularly loopy rejected version of "Flying."  But damn do I love that jazzy ending. :-)

"I Hate To See The Evening Sun Go Down" is actually a cover of an old standard called "St. Louis Blues."

I'm glad you put "Happy The Man" on there. That one's got some KILLER lyrics. "Like a nun with a gun, I'm wonderful fun!"

"Yvonne" is, I think, from 1986 or so, co-written with Eric Stewart.

I really like the mouth solo, I would never consider it a placeholder!

Favourite unreleased song? Without a shadow of doubt "Vegetable Man" by Pink Floyd.

One of Syd Barrett's last songs for the band, it was apparently written just before a recording session, because the band needed a song. It's basically Syd describing what he's wearing, and throwing in a chorus of "Vegetable Man, Where Are You?". There's a few version doing the rounds, off the top of my head they are..

1987 Mix
BBC version from December 1967

Yeah "Yvonne" was a P2P outtake and my guess is the reason it wasn't included on the album isn't because it doesn't sound like anything else on that particular record.  It's a pure sixties Macca pop song and the P2P as much as I enjoy it will always remain Paul's attempt to fit in with the production style that dominated the industry throughout the eighties.  Not surprisingly he failed miserably.

P2P has it moments, but yeah, it's even more the sound of  a former king trying to find a new place to fit in than, say, McCartney II was--on that one, he was a pissed-off, broken man who didn't care what anyone thought of what he was putting on tape at the time.

P2P might be a decent album if it were seriously remixed, and had some songs swapped out. "Busker" could be fantastic--replace the bv's with something more raw, same with the lead guitar...

Pink Floyd - Millionaire. This would probably have appeared on their second album. It's a bit similar to Corporal Clegg.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm2mvjKAvxo

The Who - Melancholia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG1HJdEuCn0. Intended for the abandoned Who's For Tennis album which was to have been a stopgap release after Sell Out and before Tommy.  Some songs from the same period, Joys, Facts of Life and a studio version of their cover of Shakin' All Over have never circulated officially or unofficially.

Velvet Underground - Ocean Loaded sessions version, imo one of their most beautiful recordings, second only to Pale Blue Eyes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAcnyJxZcao

Yes' 1978 Tormato sessions outtakes - You Can Be Saved http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TNzPHoVlz8, Richard, Abilene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2Bi_kbwIXs, Some Are Born http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2huFWTtkJ8 [a version of this with better vocals from Jon is on the bootleg Yes Digital Reels,] Countryside http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzc-nPd1U6Q and Celestial Seasons [available on the bootleg Digital Reels, this was an early version of On the Silent Wings of Freedom with alternate lyrics and a slightly different ending. Alan White refers to this during a film of Yes recording On The Silent Wings, "There's a few bits of magic that were on the original that just aren't there anymore." If Tormato featured these in place of some of what made the album it would have been far better.

Ween - The Argus Part II http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnCNYDLwJOs Too bad this didn't make it to the two disc collection of Quebec demos and outtakes collection given away to fans online last year, I think it's great.
