"Surf The Musical," a Sizzling New Production Featuring the Songs of The Beach Boys, to Premiere at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino This Summer
Tony Award-Nominated California Girl Kristin Hanggi to Create and Direct the Multi-Million Dollar Musical Extravaganza Written by Burton Young

BEVERLY HILLS, CA, May 03, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- "Surf The Musical" ( www.surfthemusical.com ), a nostalgic journey of sight and sound, brings the glory of The Beach Boys' rock 'n roll hits to center stage at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino this summer.

A series of preview performances will begin the week of June 11, and continue to the Gala Celebrity, VIP, and Media Opening Night Performance Tuesday, July 17, it was announced by Surf Productions LLC Executive Producers Michael Ingram, J. Burton Gold and Skip Klintworth.

Fresh off the heels of the worldwide success of her hit musical, "Rock Of Ages," Broadway's hottest young Tony Award-nominated director, Kristin Hanggi, is now set to launch her second Rock Extravaganza with "Surf The Musical," a magical spectacle sure to delight the critics and have the audience dancing in the aisles. "We want to capture the essence of what made the music great," said Hanggi.

Music-lovers of all ages will revel in the onstage sparkle of the big waves, as "Surf The Musical" places the genius of The Beach Boys' music front and center. A fabulous company of sun-tanned dancers and singers will rock the audience with the legendary hit songs of America's band, as they tell a carefree story of good vibrations set in the nostalgic, happy times of the 1960s' Southern California beach community.

Hanggi has put together an amazing state-of-the-art dream team of Broadway's top backstage talents, who will light up the showroom at Planet Hollywood with a modern, technologically eye-popping production. This multi-talented array includes set designer Beowulf Boritt ("The Scottsboro Boys"), lighting designer Howell Binkley ("Jersey Boys," "Memphis"), costume designer Gregory Gale ("Arcadia," "The Wedding Singer," "Urinetown"), Grammy Award-winning Music Producer Frank Filipetti, and Music Director Ed Hamilton ("Priscilla Queen of the Desert," "Promises Promises").

Utilizing cutting-edge, innovative technology from projection design wizard Darrel Maloney (the genius behind the high-paced media of "American Idiot"), and celebratory choreography from RJ Durell and Nick Florez (Michael Jackson's "Immortal," Katy Perry's "California Girls" World Tour, Madonna's "Confessions" Tour), "Surf The Musical" will rock the Las Vegas strip.

"Surf The Musical" promises to be Las Vegas' hottest new musical extravaganza, as audiences are transported into the magic of the early 1960s and the sweet sounds of summer enhanced by such memorable Beach Boys hits as California Girls, Help Me, Rhonda, I Get Around, Fun, Fun, Fun, God Only Knows, Wouldn't It Be Nice, and many, many more.

"Surf The Musical" performs nightly (dark Thursdays) at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. Show times are 7:00 p.m. except Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. with additional 4:30 p.m. performances on Sundays and 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Tickets are priced at $158.40, $114.40, $92.40 and $70.40 including taxes and fees and can be purchased in person at the Planet Hollywood Showroom Box Office, online at www.surfthemusical.com and www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at (800) 745-3000.

I wonder if this a dry-run for the movie project based on BB tunes or something separate.

I don't think this will make any impression. So much money, promotion and work was put into "Viva Elvis" and see what happened. These type of shows had their run of success but that's over for a few years now. My two cents for whatever it's worth

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

This exact idea already failed very badly a few years back in NY, right? Here's the Wikipedia entry:
Good Vibrations is a Broadway jukebox musical featuring the music of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys. It opened February 2, 2005, at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre and ran for 94 performances before closing on April 24, 2005.[1] The musical follows the tale of three high school friends who want to escape their small New England town and drive to California.

Yep - "Good Vibrations - the Musical" springs to mind as the title.  It was gone so fast I don't recall though.

I can't see it succeeding when it's at the same property as "Peepshow" with ex-Playmate Holly Madison.  It's too much competition for ticket money, especially at the prices they're asking.  It's a different audience they're trying to attract, but the presence of "Peepshow" and the type of signs they likely have around the hotel to advertise that show (R-rated topless strip show, which also features singers belting out renditions of oldies) is not going to encourage the family-type audience they want to attract.  I'm guessing it will bomb big time, even if it's not as awful as people suspect it will be.  Though I'm sure it's awful.

It looks like this show is only scheduled for two months.  It also appears it may be sharing the same theater with Peepshow and starts two hours before that show, so it has to run 90 minutes or less.  There's no cast list so it can't be they have even minor people anyone has ever heard of.

Wasn't there a Beach Boys themed restaurant planned for that hotel or another one?  It could be tied into that.  I haven't been to Vegas in ten years, never liked the town or the mega-hotels/casinos.  I'm not sure this would make anyone want to make a special trip just to see the show.  The Beach Boys don't exactly have the same type of following as the Beatles or Elvis, who have Cirque shows devoted to them.  People will go to those just to see the acrobats and special effects.

Sun-tans, see? Ere in Yorkshire they're a mark of wealth, success and good taste - not everyone can afford a fortnight in Torromolinos, you know.

I think we should have a class outing.

"Surf City" vanished even faster back in the 80s. I don't think it made it out of previews.

No need for extravangant hols anymore when you can buy sun-tans in bottles now, just don't stack them next to the Guiness (like my late Granny did)
