I'm a sucker for ridiculous spectacle in pop, so Nicky Minaj gets my vote. The songs are stupid and brash, the costumes/makeup/videos are OTT.... What can I say? If you're gonna be a popstar, be a fucking ridiculous popstar! None of that safe boyband crap.

Lady Gaga does all that but actually does it well and with some substance. Minaj just makes me want to push the Q-tip in further and further until the pain stops.

They're both overrated as hell and proof that today's music is way more "style" than substance.

I think Bruce wrote this song with Mike Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtDGXpfIoz8&feature=related

It's a really pretty tune and Bruce sounds fantastic on it. For my money Bruce and Terry were better than Jan and Dean  Grin

Correct - Mike supplied the lyric and also the bass vocals.

I'm a sucker for all that laid back dreamy sounding stuff. Everything on that track sounds so crisp aswell and the tone of that guitar is really sweet. Any info on who played what on the track Andrew?

I thought Nicky's contributions to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy were super fresh and deviated in a good way from the cookie cutter pop stars that have poluted the airways over the last decade. It made me want to keep an ear to the ground for her solo work.... I can't even tell you about the kind of disappointment I felt was when I first heard 'Super Bass'  Sad

I'll agree that this is exactly why they're both popular. However, I'll say I think Ms.Germanotta has a fair amount of substance, though, it's just that the general public probably cares more about said "style", unfortunately. Obviously I appreciate her work for very, very different reasons than the Beach Boys or just about everything else I listen to, but yeah. If she's not yours or anyone else's cup of tea, I can totally understand that. Nicky Minaj, though... *shutter*

Man, Bruce's voice kicks ass. d00d didn't have nearly enough leads on Beach Boys songs.

The usual suspects, i.e. the Crew.

Virtually the entire pop music industry has always been way more style than substance. It's just that each generation considers its style to be substance.

I hear some gaga songs and think they're catchy, mostly they're just bad though.  And minaj kist seems so desperate to be a pop star that she both has zero credibility and is just the worst ever.

Plus when gaga can sing like this, it at least says she has some talent.

I really like his vocals on the Sagittarius "Present Tense" album.  He has one of those sunshine pop sweet voices.

He said in an interview that all Brian Wilson did on that song was one line for the lyrics, so yeah that's pretty much his song.
