Stereo SMiLE Mini-Mix, Vol. 2
«
on:
April 06, 2012, 10:11:20 AM »
Hey all,
I'm back with some more SMiLE mayhem.
Title:
Stereo SMiLE Mini-Mix, Vol. 2
Preview & Download:
http://smilead.blogspot.com/2012/04/stereo-smile-mini-mix-vol-2.html
Track list:
1) With Me Tonight
2) Vegetables / Heroes And Villains Pt. 2
3) Heroes And Villains / I'm In Great Shape / Barnyard
4) Wonderful
5) Cabinessence
6) With Me Tonight / Vegetables
7) Child Is Father Of The Man / Surf's Up
Total Duration:
9:20
In this mix, alternate takes are mashed up with mainly authentic (and some Melodyned) vocals to create a new way of hearing some of our favorite SMiLE tracks.
I constructed it to be one flowing listen, however I did include the seperate files so you can jump around from track to track.
SMiLE,
J

Glad to see that your creativity is still present! Many of these mixes reminded how many different ways SMiLE can go. Thanks for the listen.

No prob! Thanks for checking it out. I love doing this stuff, a little too much sometimes.
Question: Which song/section do you think works best using the alternate backing tracks?

Just about crapped my pants when the vegetables fade/h&v vocals thing kicked in. That and the Smile AD vocal mix is enough to confirm that you fucking rock.

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.

Appreciated sir! Nice! Glad u mentioned that section. That was a cool part to stumble upon, hearing the 2 "diidiiidit diidiidit"'s sync'd up. So good that I had to drop the beat there.

you Sir, are simply the most fabulous smile mixer of all time. You make my day everyday, I listen to your Smile AD 4.0 all the time - it has become my SMiLE. I dig your experimentation here!
I may seem ignorant of what boots are out there, but how did you find the isolated lead verse vocal for H&V. Is there only that one in circulation or are the others around?

I'd hazard a guess it's from the SOT boot....
May I ask why the vocals in the CITFOTM piano/horn segment are mixed down so low? I was expecting them to kick in!

Re: SMiLE AD 4.0
Thanks bro. I have a blast making them, and I'm glad I have fellow SMiLE fans to share them with.
Re: H&V vocal -
Hypehat's on the money.
Re: CIFOTM vocals -
That part was kind of a happy accident. Somehow while I was adjusting the time-stretching for the previous section, a few bars of vocals ended up on the piano/horn part, and right away it occurred to me that all of the harmonies fit perfectly within the chordal context of the piano/horn track.
The thing is, the isolated vocal track still has a bit of instrumental in there, and once you put it against anything other than the original instrumental, it starts to stick out like a sore thumb. So in order to satisfy my urge to have those vocals there, but still keep it musical / professional enough, I ended up putting a filter effect on them, to sort of infer.. "hey, these vocals work here".
If I can solidify the isolation a little further, I'll definitely do a version of that part with the vocals full blast.
At this point, I think that's the next step in this particular journey. Improved isolations on stuff like IIGS / Cabinessence / Wonderful.
Incidentally, there is a slight improvement on the IIGS isolation for this mix, but eventually I'd like to start from scratch on everything.

Wow!
I'll admit, I'm conditioned to listening to Smile as a series of discrete tunes, but anyone who can make the Rock With Me Henry Wonderful into a credible (better than credible - I actively enjoyed it!) mix deserves major, major credit. BY=sublime, IIGS=fab.
Murry Wilson would dig the first part of your CIFOTM and its many syncopations. I mean that in the nicest possible way.
As a whole, this is a new window on the Smile experience. It places a new emphasis on and creates new connective tissue out of bits I'd long considered 'minor'. This is, I guess, a large part of the Smile re-mixer's credo, and I've honestly not heard better so far. It's avant-garde and wilfully experimental, but there are no gratuitous moments, nor any breaches of discipline, throughout. It's wholly musical, and a musical whole.
I doff my hat. Sublime.

Glad you enjoyed it sir. That was the goal here in some spots.. to create sort of "outtake" versions of these sections, to show how they would've sounded had Brian gone with earlier backing track takes. The faster Cabinessence chorus with the tom-tom part for instance, imo, gives the released version a run for its money. You can tell BW was still on his "Good Vibrations" kick on that one.

That's classic.
But man, I'm glad you said that. Because every time I finish one of these Smile mixes, I think to myself.. would Murry approve?

BUMP for anyone who missed it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZoIY8bdNNo
I combined a bunch of Smile vocals with some of the alternate backing tracks found on The Smile Sessions box set.
A few notable spots:
* Brian's "Wonderful" vocal matched up with the "Rock With Me Henry" track
* "Cabinessence" vocals placed on the faster alternate track take with additional percussion
* "Vegetables" tag vocals matched up with "Heroes & Villains pt. 2" vocals, placed over an alternate take of the Vegetables tag track
Hope u enjoy!

Fanmixers have a hell of a weird relationship to the backing track to H&V, that's all I will say.
Even Mark Linnett seems to hate it, mixing it so low I can't hear the drum beat.

That'd be because all official existing mixes of the song have the drums mixed waaaay in the back. I agree
