Worth a read:

The progressive core of country music

These kinds of negative projections of the people who have made country music, and have listened to it, linger even today. The stereotype is that they all harbor conservative political and social beliefs, setting them as sexist, racist, jingoistic, and fundamentalist Christian by nature. But this image is a lie. Right from the start, country music spoke up with a progressive voice.

Wow! That Bakersfield set looks fantastic. Bear, you've done it again!

Growing up in Northern California, I heard a lot of Country on KRAK and quite a bit of the crossover stuff on KROY and KXOA. My mom loved Western Swing - maybe that's why she bought my first two guitars from Tiny Moore. I didn't realize how much Western music I had heard and absorbed while growing up until many years down the road.

Funny connection: my boss at Capitol Records was the son of Buck Owens' manager, Jack McFadden.

I taped the Ryman concert and watched a part of it - tribute songs for Jimmie Rodgers, Sons of the Pioneers, Bob Wills, and Bill Monroe (and Earl Scruggs).
Great so far. However, although the Carter Family was mentioned no song was played by them. Perhaps they'll honor them later in the program.
This really shows the variety of forms "Country Music" has taken.

Really looking forward to the Ken Burns series.

Ken Burns on the true roots of country music

Over the past 30 years, the films of Ken Burns have covered the Civil War, the Vietnam War, baseball, jazz and more. His latest project, chronicling the story of country music from the hollers of West Virginia to the fields of California, may be his most emotional. “CBS This Morning: Saturday” co-host Jeff Glor sat down with Burns this week here in New York and one of the film's stars in Nashville to look beyond any current definition of country music and uncover its true roots.

I haven't watched it yet, but Bristol locals are really excited about how much time they spend on the Bristol Sessions. The Carters, Jimmie Rodgers are all local heroes around here. Excited for the rockabilly episode too.

Haven’t seen much of George Jones yet in the first four and he is the king of country but it is not bad. Though as a reviewer noted the show is very uncritical of the music. Also I wish he’d play whole clips instead of always jumping away to a talking head in the middle of a song.

I've taped all of the episodes but have only been able to watch the first one. Hope to be able to watch a couple tomorrow.
I really enjoyed the first episode . I realize that there were so many greats in Country music over the past 90 plus years of recordings and some are not going to get their due. Hopefully those who haven't had stand alone documentaries will have them. Over the past few years I've seen docs on the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Johnny Cash, Charley Pride, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson...

Ordered the Big book that is associated with this . It's supposed to have valuable info and photos. I'll either get it tomorrow or Monday.

Obviously from my POV the documentary has nowhere to go but down-let’s be honest modern country is mostly just pop music for non-urbanites. There’s not much to discuss after 1990 or so.....

That's my impression as well. Or as Tom Petty said "Modern Country bands are like bad Rock bands with a fiddle".  Cheesy

That's cool! Let us know how you like it.
Unfortunately I have to wait until the documentary airs on german TV. Maybe I can stream it before that.

I was wondering about the same, why George Jones is only included with a couple of songs. But I guess you have to make those decisions. I once saw a (BBC?) documentary about Country Music which was pretty good all in all but didn't even mention the Possum.
A friend wondered why Conway Twitty wasn't included, and I said that that's probably because he wasn't as epoch-making, though he had so many hits. You could also argue that Jerry Lee Lewis should've been included on the soundtrack, since his stuff from the late 60s/early 70s was among the best Country records around. But those records where not a "new" style in Country.
I guess as it is with documentaries, the movie is not supposed to be the last word on Country, but to serve as a key to understand it and a start to explore it.

Obviously from my POV the documentary has nowhere to go but down-let’s be honest modern country is mostly just pop music for non-urbanites. There’s not much to discuss after 1990 or so.....

That's generally my impression of modern country music as well. Hoping that perhaps the documentary might bring a pleasant surprise or two.
I do like some of the post 1990 work, some of George Strait or Ricky Skaggs.
But I don't listen to any of the radio stations playing modern country. I had to share an office for a few years with someone who had the local country station on. Most of the songs seemed overproduced and formulaic. There was one song in particular that drove me nuts and it was on heavy rotation . The refrain included lyrics where the guy didn't care that he "didn't know the difference between Iraq and Iran". Arggh!

Yeah-I just think Garth brooks was the dividing line-when country just became pop and power ballads with a cowboy hat or a mullet.  I never had much time for him or Reba or Trisha Yearwood or Alabama or whoever. Alan Jackson, Randy Travis And George strait are neo-traditionalists so I like them better but none of them grab me like haggard or George Jones or Patsy Cline.

Disc Five

    “Guitar Town” – Steve Earle

I'm no fan of country by any stretch of the imagination. But looking through these discs, something moved me to give this track a listen--and it's beautiful!

Maybe it's the Duane Eddy-style guitar that does it for me...

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.
