Worth a read:

The progressive core of country music

These kinds of negative projections of the people who have made country music, and have listened to it, linger even today. The stereotype is that they all harbor conservative political and social beliefs, setting them as sexist, racist, jingoistic, and fundamentalist Christian by nature. But this image is a lie. Right from the start, country music spoke up with a progressive voice.

Wow! That Bakersfield set looks fantastic. Bear, you've done it again!

Growing up in Northern California, I heard a lot of Country on KRAK and quite a bit of the crossover stuff on KROY and KXOA. My mom loved Western Swing - maybe that's why she bought my first two guitars from Tiny Moore. I didn't realize how much Western music I had heard and absorbed while growing up until many years down the road.

Funny connection: my boss at Capitol Records was the son of Buck Owens' manager, Jack McFadden.

I taped the Ryman concert and watched a part of it - tribute songs for Jimmie Rodgers, Sons of the Pioneers, Bob Wills, and Bill Monroe (and Earl Scruggs).
Great so far. However, although the Carter Family was mentioned no song was played by them. Perhaps they'll honor them later in the program.
This really shows the variety of forms "Country Music" has taken.

Really looking forward to the Ken Burns series.

Ken Burns on the true roots of country music

Over the past 30 years, the films of Ken Burns have covered the Civil War, the Vietnam War, baseball, jazz and more. His latest project, chronicling the story of country music from the hollers of West Virginia to the fields of California, may be his most emotional. “CBS This Morning: Saturday” co-host Jeff Glor sat down with Burns this week here in New York and one of the film's stars in Nashville to look beyond any current definition of country music and uncover its true roots.

I haven't watched it yet, but Bristol locals are really excited about how much time they spend on the Bristol Sessions. The Carters, Jimmie Rodgers are all local heroes around here. Excited for the rockabilly episode too.
