Marty Stuart's collection of country music memorabilia

On stage, Marty Stuart always sparkles, from his cowboy clothes to his virtuosity on the guitar and mandolin. But the country star also has a side gig, as the keeper of Nashville's memories. Stuart has built one of the world's largest private collections of country music memorabilia – 20,000 pieces in all, priceless relics of such artists as Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash. Mark Strassmann reports.

Dolly Parton: Legend

We've been singing along for decades with Dolly Parton, the poor girl from the Great Smoky Mountains who became the glitzy queen of country glamour. She's still at it 24/7, still writing her legacy one song at a time, without a thought for the "R" word. Tony Dokoupil talked with the entertainer, who has sold more than 100 million albums, and who is the Grammys' 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year for her charity work.

WVPB presents special sneak peek of ‘Country Music: A Film by Ken Burns’

A screening and concert featuring Kathy Mattea and Charlie McCoy celebrating Country Music: A Film By Ken Burns will be held April 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre in the Creative Arts Center at West Virginia University in Morgantown.

https://www.wvpublic.org/post/wvpb-presents-special-sneak-peek-country-music-film-ken-burns#stream/0

Here's an interview with Burns:

With ‘Country Music,’ Ken Burns tunes into a sound that is uniquely American

https://www.bostonglobe.com/arts/2019/03/07/with-country-music-ken-burns-tunes-into-sound-that-uniquely-american/2RJpTimXGuSpi2S4L13xgN/story.html

And more:

Ken Burns turns to an American phenomenon for his next PBS extravaganza

https://www.pressherald.com/2019/03/03/ken-burns-turns-to-country-music-for-his-next-pbs-extravaganza/

And here is the description of this documentary from Burns' official website:

Country Music will chronicle the history of a uniquely American art form, rising from the experiences of remarkable people in distinctive regions of our nation.  From southern Appalachia’s songs of struggle, heartbreak and faith to the rollicking western swing of Texas, from California honky tonks to Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, we will follow the evolution of country music over the course of the twentieth century, as it eventually emerged to become America’s music.

It will be directed and produced by Ken Burns; written and produced by Dayton Duncan; and produced by Julie Dunfey—Emmy-award winning creators of PBS’s most-acclaimed and most-watched documentaries for more than a quarter century, including The Civil War, Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, The Dust Bowl, and many more.

Country Music will be a sweeping, multi-episode series, exploring the questions, “What is country music?” “Where did it come from?” while focusing on the biographies of the fascinating characters who created it—from the Carter family, Jimmie Rodgers and Bob Wills, to Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Charley Pride, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Garth Brooks and many more—as well as the times in which they lived.  And like the music itself, Country Music will tell unforgettable stories—stories of the hardships and joys shared by everyday people.

We will trace its origins in minstrel music, ballads, hymns, and the blues, and its early years when it was called hillbilly music played across the airwaves on radio station barn dances. We will see how Hollywood B movies instituted the fad of singing cowboys like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, and watch how the rise of juke joints after World War II changed the musical style by bringing electric guitars and pedal steel guitars to the forefront.  We will follow the rise of bluegrass music with Bill Monroe and we will note how one of country music’s offspring—rockabilly—mutated into rock and roll in Memphis.  And we’ll see how Nashville slowly became not just the mecca of country music, but “Music City USA.” All the while, we will note the constant tug of war between the desire to make country music as mainstream as possible and the periodic reflexes to bring it back to its roots.

Well, first I have to tell you that I'm absolutely not-knowing about modern country music. Basically everything that came after the 70s is not my thing. I can't stand the sound, the singing, all of that crap. I am a fan of what George Jones called "real country music", I guess it would be called "traditional country" these days. Anyway, just so you know that I can't say a lot about modern country.

And it's hard for me to pick anyone. I don't look at who's the best and so on. A great singer is a great singer and doesn't need to be compared that way to other people. But those who I always come back to are Hank Williams sr., George Jones, and certainly Waylon Jennings although I still need to learn much more about his catalogue. I listened to a couple of his albums from his prime and they are terrific. Looks like the albums I randomly bought where not on that level, although still very good.
On another day I'd say Jimmie Rodgers, Willie Nelson, and Ray Price. And on another day yet other people, so it's really not "my top 3". I just love that music and it has to offer so much and so many great artists.

What are your favorites?

'Country Music' documentary makes its Mississippi debut

PHILADELPHIA, Miss. (WTOK) - Philadelphia is getting ready for a night out on the town with country music legend Marty Stuart. Famed director Ken Burns’ 8-part, 16-hour documentary, 'Country Music' makes its Mississippi debut Thursday night at the Ellis Theatre, in Stuart’s hometown.

The Grammy Award winning artist loaned his voice and knowledge to the film that covers the genre’s evolution over the 20th century.

Stuart and Dayton Duncan, one of the film’s producers, say they can’t wait to share the film with the public.

“This guy. This guy is in the film more than anyone else because he knows so much about this music. He taught us. I’ll show clips about the Father of Country Music Jimmie Rodgers, too,” says Duncan.

Tickets for the event have sold out. The documentary will also be shown Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Meridian at Peavey headquarters.

I'm really looking forward to this series. There have been other documentaries about the Carter Family but not nearly enough about Jimmie Rodgers. I can listen to those pioneers all day.
I hope it will help me appreciate some of the later country recordings , although I don't know if I'll ever like the offerings over the last 20 years or so. Most are way overproduced for my liking.

I don't think the documentary will go very much into the new country scene (which of course is already a couple of decades old). If I understand correctly it is about traditional or classical country.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

I picked up a Tom T. Hall collection at Half Price Books yesterday. Had almost forgotten about this guy! Despite the mawkish "I Love", Hall had a singular gift for storytelling and detail. Progressive country from the 70s at its best!

Oh yes! He has a very distinctive style of songwriting. You can almost tell if a song was written by him just because it's so different to the other things. Probably my favorite of his is "That's how I got to Memphis". Such a beautiful song! There are a lot of versions of course, a. o. a recording by Solomon Burke on his "Nashville"-album, just voice and accoustic guitar. Wonderful!
There's also his "Ballad of forty Dollars" which was covered by Jerry Lee Lewis on his Vegas live album:
