I've been listening to a lot of Mary Chapin Carpenter lately.

My dad used to listen to what I call "old school" country like Kenny Rogers.

I just spent a month in the US. Just out of curiosity, my car radio was mainly tuned to local mainstream country stations, just to get an idea where country is going nowadays... God, it was sh*t.

Sturgill is like a young Waylon.  Have you listened to this?

can't get the damn link to work.  Look up:  "You Can Have the Crown/Some Days" (Live at Sun King Brewery)

Yeah, Sturgill is great! Saw him at Fillmore, opening for Drive-By Truckers. Actually, I was amazed! I didn't even know there's an opening act, but he sure blues me away. The guy has an amazing backing band as well, especially that country shredder on Telecaster.

Heard this guy on the Grand ol Opry again tonight, he's pretty damn good

Chris Janson - "When I'm Holding Her"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cse3X-8YBLU

I like the guy's vibe, he's like a crackhead but he stopped doing crack and kept all the annoying mannerisms.  Still it's hard not to like him, very passionate guy.  What are you supposed to do, tell him he smiles too much?

They always have interesting acts show up on the Opry, you should catch it if you get a chance.  Here's an example

Lennon & Maisy - "Ring of Fire"

Mainstream country music today reeks. Let me hear the sweet sound of a steel guitar moaning behind an acoustic guitar, vocals, bass and drums and I'm happy.

Nice some real country is gettin' out.  Everything I've checked by Sturgill is pretty good.

This is one of my very favorite country songs:

Ok, thanks. Have to check him out.

I don't hear modern mainstream country if I don't have to. All sounds exactly the same and every voice sounds like a try-out for the most annoying Merle Haggard impersonator. But there are probably exceptions I guess. I myself listen to the classic country music; 30s-70s mostly. It's just the best to me. Same with blues and gospel imo.

Do you guys have heard any of the great Hank Williams releases and boxsets of a few years ago? The Garden Spot Programs, The Lost Concerts, The Unreleased Recordings, Revealed

I don't own them but have listened on youtube to some stuff and via amazon's samples. There's some great, great music and it's fantastic so see a legend getting treated so good. You're not a spoiled child as a Presley fan.

So Thursday we lost Dawn Sears to lung cancer... she was of course the lead singer of the Time Jumpers, widely considered one of the best kept secrets in Nashville.  Essentially the Time Jumpers are a band full of the most well respected studio musicians in town, and they play free shows each week full of western swing.  Dawn had a more traditional career in the 80's but never really made it mainstream.  Her husband Kenny Sears is seen in this video with her @ the Time Jumpers from several years ago, it kind of gives you a vibe of what her music was all about and what a wonderful talent she had.

Dawn Sears w/The Time Jumpers - Sweet Memories

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Fi-BhsKOMA

She remained strong, laughing, beautiful and a fantastic singer all the way to the end, as you can see in this clip from 6 months ago.  Notice Vince Gill playing guitar beside her (Vince is a full time member of the Time Jumpers!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HRTqV49Iw4

Also, last night Kacey Musgraves appeared at the Grand Ol' Opry and performed "Don't Fence Me In" in tribute to her!  I can't find a video of it, but here's Kacey performing "Silver Lining" last night.

The man, the legend, Little Jimmy Dickens passed away today.  Horrible news.  They should just shut the Grand ol Opry down now, this is ground shaking.  94 years old, I heard him perform a week ago on the show.  He had a long, long career and did about everything.  It would take hours to even touch on all the cool stuff he did in his career...

He started out singing on a local radio station in Huntington, West Virginia not far from where I was born myself.  He was always short in stature, but wore it like a badge, always making fun of himself and never taking himself too seriously... everybody who met him loved him, from his fans, to his peers, to even the president of the United States.  He knew everyone you've ever heard of in country music personally, from Hank Williams to Roger Miller to Brad Paisley and Taylor Swift.

So in the 40's he went to Nashville as a balladeer, and had a ton of hits.  He took over "The Country Boys", hiring a third guitarist and getting rid of the fiddle and banjo players... at the time having three guitars in a country group was considered blaspheme as ridiculous as that sounds.  He made hit after hit with his novelty songs, most of them ridiculing his size or his poor upbringing in West Virginia.  He joined the Grand ol Opry in the early 50's and immediately became great friends with Hank Williams, the Carter Family and all the others on the show at the time.

In the 70's and 80's he was instrumental in the success of "Hee Haw", a staple in the south at the time.  He told jokes, twirled his oversized guitar around on stage, sang love songs, sang children's songs, sang novelty songs, and basically entertained people everywhere he went.    At times he was Roger Miller's next door neighbor, George Jones' fishing buddy, and June Carter's dancing partner on t.v. ... the guy has been a constant in Nashville for nearly 70 years.  I've heard him many times on shows invite the public to stop by his house if they're ever on a tour or in the area for coffee!

Here's some cool stuff he did:

"We Could" - Live on the Opry, mid 50's

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCZ_UtgVa1Y

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"May the Bird of Pardise Fly Up Your Nose" - 1965 Live

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfYFx6MOTYU

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Little Jimmy once had to follow Garth Brooks as the last act on the Opry one night, this was at the height of Garth's popularity, and the crowd went nuts.  So Jimmy went to his suitcase, got out this raggedy ann doll that he carried around everywhere, and did his recitation of Raggedy Ann to close the show.  Standing Ovation.

Here's a version of it from the 70's.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxDgBSg-dgo

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's Jimmy doing a cameo as the backup guitarist in Vince Gill's "Don't Let Our Love Start Slippin' Away" video from 1992.  Notice all the other legends, even Carl Perkins!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlUGTof2TWU

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here he's Brad Paisley's fishing buddy in Brad's hit "I'm Gonna Miss Her" from 2000

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwRrKaq0IyY

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's Little Jimmy interupting the CMA's in 2009, (I'ma let you finish...) to tell you who REALLY had the best music video that year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsLPY-y-GM8#t=25

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's Jimmy from 4 or 5 years ago doing his version of "John Henry" with Marty Stuart

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYzHm2GHPnQ

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here he is a year or so ago, doing "Mountain Dew".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBS3zvxBfWM

What a loss.  94 years is a good run, though, and now he's moved on to wherever so many of his friends that went before him have went.  God bless you Little Jimmy, thanks for the memories!

He used to tell the same jokes week after week, some of them were really, really funny.

"I'm so old, at this age... I don't even like to buy ripe Bananas...."

"We just did a show in Knoxville last weekend, when the curtains went up, there was only 1 man sitting in the audience, right in the front.  I said, 'Sir, My name's Jimmy Dickens, and I've come to do a show for you'.....    the man said 'Get it over with Shorty, i'm the Janitor and I'd like to get home"

"I'm not well... I've had laryngitis all week.  I went to see the doctor, knocked on his door.  The Nurse answered 'Hello?'... I whispered 'Is the Doctor In?' and she whispered back "No... come on in!"

"My Wife told me yesterday, 'Honey, Let's run upstairs and make love'.  I told her I cannot do both."

"I've had this stiff neck that's about to kill me.   My doctor gave me some of those little pills for men my age.... and if you don't swallow them quick, you'll get a stiff neck...."

There's an interesting phenomenon that's been going on for several years, where Nashville serves as kind of a sanctuary for disillusioned Rock musicians, or guys who in the past could make a pop record, but find themselves without a market.

Seems like that happens more and more nowadays.  Mainstream country anymore is just pop with a few hints of country instrumentation.  It's very repetitive and yet very successful.  It really is a ball buster.  Smiley

Every once in awhile they release something that's just really good in a pop-country way so I'm always thankful for that.  The more rock influenced stuff though I usually can't get my mind around.

I just looked at the top 20 songs this week, they're all crap except #19, I kind of like.  Dierks always has interesting melodies and rhyme schemes... the song's almost a novelty song, in the tradition of dare I say Roger Miller, Tom T. Hall or Buck Owens.

Yeah. I agree.  I just think that it's become too much like the worst of modern pop music. Drunk on a Plane is kinda interesting. It's topic is sad, but it has the bro-country party sound to it. I think there's still plenty of good country out there, but it's overshadowed by stuff like Florida Georgia Line and Luke Bryan. I think it will improve over the next few years. http://youtu.be/FY8SwIvxj8o This is proof of its current repetitive nature. Smiley
