I played a couple gigs with a friend's band where there guitarist couldn't make it (hence me). I had to play this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXAgv665J14
Don't actually hate it as much as I did at first, but still...

It was the easiest song to learn though, with only two chords.

I don't know about that song. He's quasi-rapping simplistic, pick-up truck lyrics and the arrangement is weirdly minimal. The music video centers on three guys who just walk around and it's just... odd. Also, that "chew tobacco, chew tobacco, spit" refrain really seals the deal for me.

It's terrible.

It's hard for me NOT to like him... but yeah that song is pretty fucking horrible.  Part of me likes that he made it, because hell it's great that he's getting rich off of nonsense.  I love working people over for money too, I'd love to be a used car salesman, or own a pawn shop... but that only goes so far.  Bad lyrics are bad lyrics.

So lesse, since last time I was here, let me see what I can think of that's pretty good country wise.  Did I play any Stonewall Jackson last time?

Stonewall Jackson - Muddy Waters

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4y-n7tBHw_o

Don't get much better than that.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know all you hipsters know everything about Jerry lee Lewis, but just in case you don't, here's the Killer doing it like only he can do it

Jerry Lee Lewis - She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydheCyLw2k4

Goodbye Baby

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

His cousin Mickey doing his best impression

Mickey Gilley - Headache Tommorow (Heartache Tonight)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKWSZVNNKKI

Is it just the fucking reverb, guys?  Why does this stuff sound better than anything recorded anymore?  GOT TO BE the reverb.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John Conlee - Old School

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQepIPCQvaI

I don't give a sh*t.  I like stuff like this.  I don't care if it's corny.  Saying I love you is the corniest thing you can possibly say.  Corny means "Greatest sh*t ever"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Merle Haggard - Makeup and Faded Blue Jeans

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN5qOpNfZ60

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tim McGraw - Felt Good On My Lips

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gAnSPp54L4

Tim McGraw ought to be in jail he's stolen so many licks... this one, imho, is stolen straight from "Video killed the Radio Star"... but with that said, the first 3 or 4 times I heard this I didn't like it... after awhile, I got it.  Great song.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toby Keith has done it again.  Toby is a great example of somebody who has great talent, but doesn't always use that great talent.  Here's Toby being the great pop song writer that he really is.

Toby Keith - Drinks After Work

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5KeKcglSQs

Very catchy.  He's now got about 30 songs with this level of songwriting, great little melodies, interesting little stories, well sung.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's an older Kenny Chesney song I've been listening to a lot lately.  I like (love) how he turns the bridge around in this.  I wish I knew what the technical idea was behind that great harmony singing they do the entire song behind him.  Are they just singing the 5th or something?  This song in my opinion is every bit as good as the classic stuff from the 60's we all worship.  That bridge is something else.

Kenny Chesney - Out Last Night

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRfKfZHUg84

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mary Chapin Carpenter - He Thinks He'll Keep Her

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JYHToYv6mI

TALENT ALERT, TALENT ALERT.  Why isn't this woman elected president yet or something?  Why are we not worshiping her like we worship Bonnie Raitt?  Well.... Bonnie's probably better but you see what i'm saying.

I love all the beautiful middle aged women in the audience singing along in all their 'man done did me wrong' glory.  LOL
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tanya Tucker - Down to my Last Teardrop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YplH9jhwNHA

Tanya as she was... what a voice.  Nobody sounds like this woman.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tanya Tucker - Delta Dawn

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oxw9xMgCRPY

Tanya as she is now... still sounds great.  Interesting thing about her, she was famous at 13... and still has the stage manerisms of a 13 year old.  Very beautiful, unique soul.   She's not a member of the country music hall of fame.  They ought to burn that motherfucker down, what a charade.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bellamy Brothers - Let your Love Flow

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDNbvwlRu6I

These guys have still got it.  Very underrated, nobody remembers them it seems.

If anybody wants to hear some really, really, reallllly early country/gospel stuff, check out the Chuck Wagon gang.  Unsurpassed family harmonies.  Stuff was recorded in the 40's.  This was the atmosphere that Hank Williams and his ilk were born into.  You can understand why Hank was such a fresh sound!   Hank reworked one of The Chuck Wagon Gang's songs as "I Saw the Light".

Chuck Wagon Gang - "We Are Climbing" "Way up in Glory"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny3eht3kL3Q

Chuck Wagon Gang - "Springtime in Glory" "Stormy Waters"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kypOd_8w4tI

Fantastically beautiful music.  I love that harmony, that's just jaw droppingly beautiful.

I listened to the "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" album for the first time earlier this week. It didn't even need to grow on me, I just immediately took to it. By the time I had finished it I, without hesitation, rated it a full 5 stars on allmusic.

I think John Lennon would have LOVED that cover, right?  He loved girl groups, and he loved "I Feel Fine", I think he would have been honored to hear that one.  I know if I was a songwriter, it'd blow me away to have somebody else take it and do it even better, and yeah... I think that's probably better than the original.

Lately I've been really diggin' Tanya Tucker.  They haven't inducted her into the country music Hall of Fame yet, I think that's a tragedy.

here's a great one if you haven't heard it, "Blood Red & Goin' Down" live on the MIDNIGHT SPECIAL!

1975 BABY!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IK_zcqCgG2s

Listen to that crazy vibrato, She's only 13 in this video if you can believe it.  I like how she sings everything like a 13 year old.  It's like she never matured, and does things that are way over the top theatrically, because nobody ever got her to sing like an adult.

Here's an interesting one, she did a rock album in the late 70's, this is her cover of "San Francisco"

Vince Gill astonished me as well. For my taste his voice is too soft at times but he has a great one. And I was surprised when I saw his guitar playing being sooo good. Didn't realize that because he was mostly "just" a singer to me

From the youtube user's description:

Cool documentary about the new breed of punky country musicians who go against the commercial country music. From TV in Denmark, in English except for a 30 second introduction. In three parts. 30 min.

Thanks to a friend in Finland for helping out with the tech stuff.

"What is Music City Roots?

Music City Roots, Live From The Loveless Cafe is a weekly, two-hour radio show that revives the historic legacy of live musical radio production in Nashville. Broadcast on Wednesday nights from 7pm to 9pm, CST, Music City Roots, Live From The Loveless Cafe showcases Nashville's astonishing music scene, from country and Americana to more progressive interpreters of tradition -- a "roots and branches" format that brings together fans of different tastes and generations. Presented live from the stage of the Loveless Barn, this show will showcase purveyors of authenticity across many genres.

Music fans worldwide know Nashville as the epicenter of country music, and Music City Roots, Live From the Loveless embraces and builds on that foundation. MCR is broadcast to a global audience, not just as the keeper of the traditional flame, but as a trusted tastemaker that looks to the future of music in all its forms and sub-genres: bluegrass, folk, alternative, western, rockabilly and crossovers into rock, jazz and world music. There has never been a time of greater variety, abundance and quality in Nashville's creative community, and Music City Roots looks to put that talent on a worldwide stage.

Each broadcast will feature 4-5 artists in 20 minute segments and short interviews, and also encourages collaboration with a nightly Loveless Jam where all musical guests embrace the spirit of Music City as the collaborative epicenter of tradition and innovation. Nashville’s legendary Keith Bilbrey is the announcer; Jim Lauderdale and other leaders of the music community host the festivities.

Vision

Our vision for Music City Roots, as a live radio show steeped in rich Nashville tradition, is to provide a global platform to showcase the deep well of amazing and diverse talent that exists here in Tennessee. Beyond Nashville, the roots and branches of Americana music are firmly entwined in Memphis, Knoxville, and across Tennessee and the entire Southeast region. Over the last several years, pockets of very gifted artists have bubbled up from New York to California and around the world, all sharing the same love for the integrity and honesty of the various forms of roots music that were birthed from American culture.

Music City Roots endeavors to offer artists a way to share their gift with the world – to connect with music lovers everywhere, through creative distribution platforms that were never before possible. Our only standard is one of excellence and integrity. We look to connect and nurture a true community of artists – young and old; famous and obscure; all sharing a desire to enrich and preserve our music, and our planet. As we help one another, the as the music grows, the world becomes a better place. Through the power of music, walls come down and cultures unite."

I scanned the thread and nobody seemed to have mentioned these guys

Jimmy Bryant & Speedy West

www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuGvIVnWnTM

Its instrumental music - kind of a Western Swing / Django  Jazzy Mix. Recording is a pretty sad looking kinescope

Off one of Jimmys solos - Sugar Foot Rag

Fun Stuff and there are a lot of songs these two recorded together and separately.

Tonight:

Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson And Merle Haggard Reunite Before Grammy Awards

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kris Kristofferson is being given a lifetime achievement award during the Grammy Awards celebration, but he doesn't think that will be the highlight of the weekend.

Kristofferson will be joined by Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Blake Shelton for a performance during Sunday's Grammy Awards telecast, and any excuse the 77-year-old singer-songwriter and actor can find to get together with his lifelong friends is a good one.

"It's so much of a pleasure to be with these guys," Kristofferson said Friday afternoon following Grammy rehearsals at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. "One of the best parts of my life has been the guys who are my real heroes are my closest friends. Willie is the closest friend I have. And Merle, the first time I met him in Nashville, people told me to stay away from him because I had a beard and the hair. I was supposed to be one of them long-haired hippies, and we were friends from the moment that we met."

While Haggard says the recognition is "overdue," Kristofferson admits to being a little embarrassed about his award. He'll be saluted Saturday at a special gathering that will include Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr of the Beatles. Kristofferson humbly wonders why he's being honored at the same time.

"Can you believe that?" he asked. "Listen, I was in the Army when they were big stars. I had five years of janitor work and pick-and-shovel jobs before I'd ever get to be a singer and a songwriter. ... The Beatles and Bob Dylan are the ones who are the superheroes that changed music in my lifetime. Remember what pop music was like before them?"

Kristofferson's peers think he had a similar impact on country music, one that continues to reverberate as the genre becomes more cosmopolitan.

"Well, he upgraded it," Haggard said. "He made it a little more sophisticated. He took it to New York."

As for Shelton, who bolted back to a taping of "The Voice" after rehearsals, Haggard thinks he fits right in with the group: "He's the big dog right now."

Thanks for the heads up. I'm gonna try and catch that. What do you think they'll perform? Maybe they'll each take a verse of "Sunday Morning Coming Down".

A few years ago, there was a rumor that Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, and somebody else, maybe George Jones (?), were going to form another Highwaymen-type group. Obviously it never came to fruition.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Good work, Rocker. Thanks for posting those clips. Were they the most awkward interviews you ever saw? Grin

I didn't notice it on Sunday night, but was Kris Kristofferson wearing a chain with a W like Waylon Jennings' logo?

Speaking of Kristofferson, I'm a little worried about him. He looked a little lost during the performance, and he wasn't much more coherent on those interviews. Maybe he did literally just step off of Willie's bus! Smokin

I'm looking forward to the album with those three guys. Hope they have a good producer. All three are getting up in years and have had a few recent health scares. Treasure them while you can.

That or it has something to do with this:
