Good stuff. Lee Ann Womack is pretty awesome. Every song she does is pretty intellectual, you have to actually pay attention to what's going on. She has 'that voice' too, where she can just sing anything. I'll bet she's very picky about what songs she'll do, they're ALWAYS top notch.
Here's my favorite of hers:

It really cooks, and if you listen close enough to catch all the lyrics it's great. Awesome melody, and awesome voice.
Hank Snow had al kinds of great stuff, love him.

Lately I've been listening to Creedence Clearwater Revival a lot
is that considered Country?
CCR got a lot of country in their but they seldomly went straight country or whatever one would call it. "Lookin' for a reason" and "Lookin' out my backdoor" are great examples for their country style. But John Fogerty recorded a solo album called "The Blue Ridge Rangers" in the 70s that is awesome ! I haven't heard his new Blue Ridge Ranger album yet which came out a few years ago.
SurferGirl7: I love "The one rose". Did you ever hear Jerry Lee's version?

Yes! One of the Gosdin brothers was Vern Gosdin. He went on to have a pretty good career, we lost him a few years ago. He earned the nickname... "The Voice" because of his amazingly soulful country twang.
My favorite song of his would be "This ain't my First Rodeo". He was one of those country singers who kind of under-sang the verses, so that he could knock you out with the chorus. Conway Twitty used to do it. You could feel the momentum building up to the first chorus. So Vern would hold back, and play around a little bit on the verse... and just when you're about to change the station, the hook would kick in, and it would be SOLID - COUNTRY - GOLD.

Would Neko Case count as country? Even if she was banned from the Opry because of a topless photo? Her first album The Virginian is great! Just loads of punk rock energy, even on the ballads.

Gram and Chris Hillman were my entry into "real" country music. I can't stand much of the "modern" stuff except for some of the neo-traditionalists. I've always loved his "Brass Buttons"...which is, I've always believed, a tender ode to his deceased, alcoholic, heiress mother. Gram's early life reads like a Tennessee Williams play...total Southern Gothic. His dad, Coon Dog Connor, was a flying ace in the Pacific during WWII who came home with some serious demons. He married Avis Sinively...the daughter of just about the largest citrus plantation in Florida. Gram grew up in a world of easy luxury...but both of his parents were alcoholics and suffered from depression. His father committed suicide when Gram was 16. His mom remarried to a guy named Bob Parsons who was either an adulterious, money grubbing creep or a decent guy (depending on whatever story you believe). His mom's drinking got worse until she finally died from liver failure when Gram was 18. He attended a prestigious prep school and Harvard before music drew him away from academics and into history. His groundbreaking work with Chris Hillman (first in the Byrds and later in the Flying Burrito Brothers) opened the door to a lot of modern country. In 2010...we spent a week on the Georgia coast and I convinced my wife to make a side trip to Waycross, Georgia which is where Gram grew up.

When I first moved to Baltimore I went out with a bunch of squares from work. Nice folks but I had nothing in common with them.
We went into a bar in Fell's Point and the first words I hear upon opening the door is "Gram Parsons." I jerked violently toward the stage - the house band (Caleb Stine and the Brakemen) were introducing "Sin City"! But they only had one vocalist! How the sh!t can you do that song with one vocalist? By the end of the first "This whole town's filled with sin" line I was loudly singing the higher vocal part - the guy heard me - beckoned me on stage - and I finished the whole song with them. It was a real trip.
On cloud nine, I jumped off stage to bask in my coolness with the work buddies. I finally found them, in the back, by the pool tables - they had no clue I even went on stage. Country to them is what's that guy's name... Tug McGraw's son?
Anyway, it's still a fun memory I carry with me.

That, my friend, is an AWESOME story! You are also 100% correct...that song cannot simply be done with one voice! You have to have the Gram/Chris blend goin' on!

Does anybody know what if any Merle Haggard
hits
Jim Gordon played drums on? I'm thinking, maybe, The Bottle Let Me Down?
I saw on wikipedia that he was credited, along with several other guys (no individual track credits) , on some of Merle's albums.
I learn more, over the years, back when he was quite young, that Jim was a very busy man. I used to think he really didn't play a lot of dates
until the very late 60's or early 70's. This came to my attention as being not accurate,
some time ago
, when I found out that he played on Pet
Sounds, River Deep Mountain High, and others. My favorite performance of his though, is still a 70's track:
Rockin Pneumonia
What a touch that guy had, especially on the cymbals. This post is turning out to be only marginally related to COUNTRY MUSIC, yet, I sense no transgression.
I guess if it feels right, do it?

Sadly a lot of the versions of Merle Haggard songs they play on the radio aren't the original versions. Merle is the type of performer who stays well within his range, so he's re-recorded his songs many times and sounds about the same even if it was recorded 30 years later... if Gordon played drums on some of his tracks you should check to make sure they're the correct version. I've often heard Haggard songs that I really liked, then later found out that the original version was slightly different (sometimes I liked the re-record better).

Jerry Lee cut two version of the song in country style. One in '73 for "The ession" and one for his latest "Mean ol' man" (the latter featuring Fogerty). Unfortunately the new one isn't that good and I'm not to keen on the 70s version either

I agree that his re-recorded stuff is pretty great, actually. I have the

Merle sings as good as ever on there.

Let me ask this vague song identification question here: A while ago in my friend's car a country song came on that sounded like it might have been Patsy Cline or at least someone imitating her productions very well. (I thought recently it might have been a Kitty Wells song since she and Patsy Cline had the same producer around the same time but I don't know Wells's output at all.) I recall one particularly interesting bit where the lyrics went "The wheel of love keeps turning, turning, turning..." with the repeated 'turning' heavily reverbed, unlike most of the rest of the song (if I'm recalling correctly) -- the song, and that specifically eerie bit, was well-done enough that I've been trying to figure out who the performer was for weeks now. Of course, given my limited supply of fairly generic-sounding information, I'm not coming up with much! Any ideas?

Hmmm. Sounds like Edie Brickell's "Wheels"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4JDJ3HfD_w&feature=related
If you say that's not it, I'm going to complain because it's so dead on I don't see how it can't be it
It's not country at ALL though so maybe it was a cover of that song?

It's definitely not this song (though this is a good one too). The song I heard definitely had a '50s Patsy Cline sound to it, plus the lyrics are not the same. I wish I could be more helpful but I don't remember much else about the song. :/

In Nashville the oldest radio station around is WSM 650 AM. They have unbelievable shows on there. Merle Haggard was there last wednesday. On Wednesdays they do a show called "Wayback Wednesday" and it starts about 9p.m. The guy that hosts it, Eddie Stubbs, is probably the greatest country d.j. in the world. Anyways he talks about all the old time ancient songs that are around from the 20's and 30's when things were first recorded. As he started the show, Merle showed up and stayed till well after midnight. They played a couple of his songs but mainly played all his influences like Bob Wills.
Another group he kept talking about was the Maddox brothers and Rose.
