Dennis' song Constant Companion - Is it about a guardian angel?

At first I thought it was about a man and woman type love, but when I listened the other day I realised it was something far more spiritual and deeper than that,  It makes me love it more.  Did he believe in that kind of thing? I don't know if anyone has asked this question before, sorry if they have.   

His guardian angel would have had a hell of a ride!

I always took it to be about a guardian angel or "spirit guide," as well.
