Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Artists: #12 Beach Boys

How do you feel about this? I was shocked and expected them to be higher but my opinion may be bias since they are my 2nd favorite band.
At least they are the 3rd band on the list right after "The Beatles" and "The Rolling Stones".

The votes are mostly from musicians.

So High?
Follow the thread! I'm playing on my own words. Here, maybe my words make more sense this way:
Rockandroll: I'm shocked
Rolling Stone put them so high
.
Newguy: Why?
Rockandroll: Because it's always been a magazine written by bozos.
Newguy: The votes are mostly from musicians.
Rockandroll: Then that explains why
Rolling Stone put them so high.

What do you expect from a publication that ranks Pet Sounds as the number two album of all time and Sgt Peppers as number one?

Yeah, that's good. To be honest, it would be embarrassing for them at this point if Pet Sounds didn't enter the the top five or so. Nevertheless, it
is
still a sh*t publication.

Not just about your taste but you have to remember these were two of the biggest artists in a turbulent time.
Most of that crowd screaming for JB were white!
BTW....if you are that young, leave the tattoo for a few years!

I have this in book form. I bought it before a flight back to Louisiana last spring. It's still there (in storage). A good read with famous musicians writing about famous musicians. I think Pink Floyd should have been much higher on the list (along with many other artists) but it helped me pass the time on the flight so why not?
For the record, I think Sgt. Pepper and Pet Sounds are both equally wonderful and yet neither are my favorite albums by either band. Also both bands tie for #1 as to my favorite bands of all time. Yet I still don't ever want to get pistol whipped by Bruce in the bathtub.

it doesn't surprise me
read the little essay that goes with it. it stops at good vibrations. like every other review of them. its why most people know nothing of surfs up or holland or even wild honey. yet of course the beatles are followed to let it be. which to be honest is probably the equal of something like MIU or even Keepin the summer alive, if we're doing comparisons. yet that album gets something like 80th place on their 500 top albums list, but nothing except sunflower (in the back of the 300's somewhere) gets a nod. i mean really. rolling stone caters to certain artists like the beatles and bob dylan (not saying i don't think they belong, the boys and those two are my top 3 artists ever). but yeah that does surprise me that they're at twelve. i guess i should be happy. cuz thats stil pretty high.

that's the funny part
musical is universal and doesnt have a color.
I already have 3 tattoos this will be the first tattoo i get that doesnt have an actual meaning.
When i search the beatles tattoo on google i see so many examples.. so many different tattoos & when i type in beach boys tattoo i only see one and it's a surfing one!!! :/

Newguy, I understand that it can feel like that The Beach Boys are the only ones that matter and no other artist/band should be before them but this "competitive" state of mind that artist A is better than artist B isn't really a healthy way of looking at things. I used to be that way when I was younger, but quickly grew out of it when I realized that music is meant to be enjoyed, not rated and scored. There is no formula or set rule that makes an artist or band the best. These lists shouldn't be taken so seriously--or literally. Some people see these lists...find their favorite band and look at that number they were rated with and think it actually MEANS something. I'm not trying to say that the Rolling Stone people are more thoughtful than they appear but to me, the purpose of these lists isn't really in the rating and how/where each artist ranks among the list but really is a way to celebrate each artist and remind people of their greatness. James Brown and Aretha Franklin are legends...just like the Beach Boys are legends. There's room for everyone.

Wow i never looked at it like that i'm glad you told me this cuz i'm sure you used to look at it the way i did.
You're right, they are all good artists that's why they made the list.
Everyone has their own taste so the listings are always going to be different. I'm glad there are other people besides myself that realize that the beach boys are legends & that's why this message board was created.

I'm nearly 40 and
I
can't understand why James Brown and Urethra Franklin are ahead of the Beach Boys.
Still, these lists are meaningless. I remember at the turn of the century when they did "The 100 Greatest Musicians Of The Millennium", and nearly all of them were from the last 50 years.
Luckily I don't buy into the baby boomer crap that "there was Rock n' Roll and there was what came before" To me there is little difference between boogle woogie and big band music from the 30's, 40's and 50's, and early rock'n'roll. It is a clear progression. The most recent musical revolution (of note) happened about 100 years ago.
Is Al Bowly even on the Rolling Stone list? I doubt it, and yet everyone who steps up to a microphone to sing is influenced by him and other pioneers like him, without even realising.
Bloody baby boomers and their version of history!
And wait. This is "The 100 Greatest Artists Of
ALL TIME
" What a joke! So the Beatles and the Beach Boys are greater than JS Bach? What utter crap.
This means nothing.

Newguy-Take a listen to Steeley Dan's "Hey Nineteen" from the 'Aja" album. They sing about "the queen of soul" and it's a great song.
